Ban Fhancilco, May 16.—The
Democratic Couniy Committee
held a meeting last night and re
solved to nominate eighty dele-
Kales to act as a Constitutional
Nominating Convention, empower
ed to nominate eight delegates from
i this Congressional district, to be
voted for by the people of the State
at large; also to nomiuate thirty
delegates from the city and couuty
and one jointly with Sao Mateo, as
delegates to ihe Constitutional
Convention. They also recom
mended that the Convention so ap
pointed select sixty members of
their hotly to attend tho non parti
san Convention at Sacramento
May li-2il.
At v meeting of the Non-Parti
san Nominating Convention last
evening, a Committee was appoint
ed for the purpose of submitting a
list of names of possible candidates
for the Constitutional Convention,
iucluding about a dozen Working
men. Ou Monday night tbey will
make nominations.
It was expected that a serious dis
turbance would occur at the meet
ing of tbe Second Ward Club last
night, as Kearney's crowd
made serveral visits there in force.
Last night the members of the
Club were fixed for any such con
tingency, the knowledge of which
fact evidently had its ell'ect, as the
meeting was undisturbed. A num
ber of Ward Clubs were engaged In
closing up nominations for to-day's
Convention.

San Fkancisco, May 10 —Two
Conventions of tlie Workingmeu's
party started in for business some
what irregularly this morning.
That faction wh<ch acknowledges
Kearney as its head convened at
Charter Oak Hall, and was called
to order with Kearuey in the chair.
At 10 A. It. the Couuty Committee
wing of the party assembled nt
Tittel's Hall, but decided to take
uo steps unlit the views of dele
gations from the country could
be ascertained. The country dele
gates met at Humboldt Hall to
consider their course. Hero they
were waited upon by a messenger
from the Kearneyites who Inform
ed them that the Convention
would meet ut Churter Oak Hall.
One of tbe Couuty Committee par
ty named Slocum, who was pres
ent, denounced this as
an all. nipt to unduly lv*
lluence Ihe country delegates
in favor of the Kearney party.
Wellock, who was present, gave
Slocum Ihe lie. A tight ensued,
but the belligerents were separated
before much harm was done on
either side. The country delegates
finally decided to go to Charter Oak
Hall and see how tbe land lay there
before coming to auy conclusion.
The Couuty Committee Conven
tion awaited the result. After
the Kearney meeting was called
lo order, a Committee on Cre
dentials ill appointed. Tlie con
sideration of credentials occu
pied a long time. At twelve
o'clock Ihe credentials of fifty
six city delegates had been passed
upon, at which time Kearny de
clared tbe Convention adjourned
till one o'clock, lo give time to con
sider the credentials of the country
delegates. The Couuty Committee
Convention in the meantime ap
pointed a Committee on Creden
tials, who are now performing their
duties. They allege their intention
of abiding by the decision of the
country delegations, who seem to
hold the balance of power. As far
as learned, delegations are present
from Sonoma, rian Joaquin, Santa
Clara, Alameda, Monterey, Santa
Cruz, San Benito and Marin coun
ties.

Philadelphia, May loth.—The
North American announces that
the iron steamer, "The Stato
of California," will bo launch
ed to-morrow. It was built for tho
Pacific Coast Navigation Company
hut was sold in New York to a rep
resentative of the Russian Gov
ernment. The llrst installment of
$100,000 in gold was rsaid and the
remainder is forthcoming at Inter
vals during the next two months.
The steamer was built with Ihe
special object of speed and will at
tain fifteen knots au hour, making
her one of the fastest vessels afloat.
She would be especially serviceable
for privateering purposes. The
Russian Government was repre
sented by an American gentleman,
it is said, who is in the background
and who acted directly for the
Muscovite Government in order to
adapt her for tho service for which
she is intended. Extensive altera
tions will be made and these will be
begun at once. The vessel can be
completed aud ready for sea in two
months. She will be launched to
morrow Just as if sale had not been
effected by the purchase.

tempt to reopen the settled question
of tbe Presidential title, and should
be persistently resisted by all
means iv tlie power of the minor
ity, will lead to a deadlock of busl
. ness in the House for a time, tlie
. length of which cannot now be
safely conjectuored. The struggle
will certainly run through the pres
ent week, and even if tho Demo
crats muster aquorum by Saturday,
as is expected, Ihe minority will
still be able, by the skillful use of
various well known parliamentary
expedients, to postpone final action
on Potter's resolution Indefinitely.
It is the general opinion, how
over, that the deadlock will de
ended in somo manner early next
week. Alexander Stephens lias tele
graphed to Potter advising tbat full
debate be allowed and opportunity
given for a vote on Hale's amend
ment, and similar counsel may
very possibly prove ellicacious
with a sufficient number of con
servative Democratic Representa
tives to bring about a satisfactory
arrangement at quite an early date.

For several years past Stewart's
great dry goods establishments
have been widely advertised by the
publication of his remarkable char
ity—the great benevolent scheme
of bis life—tho erection of a hotel
for working women of New York
city, where for a small sum, just
about sufficient, we were led to un
derstand, to cover the cost of pro
visions, they could live in comfort,
and, to them, comparative luxury.
This was to bo tho redeeming vir
tue of the life of the great skinflint
— the man who had amassed his im
mense fortune by his ability lo
| crush out all competition, and
grind Ills faithful serviteurs to the
(lust. Well, the hotel is at last
erected—an imposing structure,
costingseveral millions. But, in
stead of the noble charity prom
ised, it turns out to be a gigantic
money-making concern—a huge
speculating scheme fur swelling
the already distended coffers of the
Stewart estate. Tbe poor working
women it was promised to benefit
are required to day $G and $7 per
week, according to location aud
size of room, for the privilege of
boarding in this stylish
caravansary. What a . grand
charity this must be for
the poor sewing woman who
stitches her life away at making 1
shirts for fifty cents a day! And
then no woman is allowed to have
in her room a sewing machine, any
exlra furniture, or pet animals or
birds of any kind. Seven dollars
a week for the privilege of living
in a prison! Aud this is the prom
ised charily that the hard-fisted old
miser was lo leave for tbe poor
women ot New York. Thus would
his very ghost fatten on the sweat
and blood of earthly toll. It is to
be hoped that the women will give
his hotel a wide hearth, as we are
inclined to think they will.— San
Jose Mercury.
How the City Fellow Weat "Hulp
lag."
For some time past a "fly" fellow
from the city has infested Sau Ber
nardino aud made himself general
ly unpopular among the boys by
his airs aud assumption of superior
knowledge. Finally it became un
bearable and tbiev put up a job on
him. They propose to go "snip
ing" and took him along to hold
the bag. Hut just previous to
starting they filled his head with
all sorts of stories about the fero
ciousness and blood-thirsty charac
ter of our Indians. So last Friday
evening they took the young man
down to a delectable locality,
covered with a scrub growth of
brush, called "Squaw Flat" and,
giving him the suck and a
lighted candle, carefully instruct
ed him how to hold them so
as to catch the snipe which they
were to go and drive up. Leaving
IIIm there the party hied them back
to town, aud calmiy waited for the
victim to appear. One hour pass
ed, and then two, but no "sniper,"
and they started out to find out
what had become of him, and as
certain whether they had been sold
or the oilier fellow. Arriving at
the ground they peered through
the hushes anil Haw the poor victim
still patiently holding tho stump
of a candle in one hand and the
sack Open with tho other. Now
the fun grew fast and furious-.
Commencing to call to one another
in Spanish, a language the
victim was totally unacquaint
ed witli, they thrashed around
among the brush making a big
noise. Instantly thoughts of
Indians tilled the poor fellow's
mind and then crowded up all the
stories with which he had been so
Industriously primed. Tbe more
he thought the more scared he be
came until he was almost frantic,
and his appeals "to take his money
but spare his life" were heart rend
ing. At last some one fired off a
revolver in the air. This was too
much, aud he set off for town at a
i 2:10 gait, which was kept up until
the security of his hotel was gained.
He was truly a pitiable object and
could hardly bo made to believe
that he had been thoroughly and
egregiously sold.— Colton Semi-
I 7'ropio.
Appointed Too Moon.
Au old soldier relating his expe
rience at a tampereoce meeting iv
lowa, said tbat at one time he got
possession of two kegs of whiskey,
took them to camp, put a faucet iv
one of them, and passed the
whiskey around among the boys
uutil they all got pretty full.
About the time the keg was empty,
he said, for v moment his con
silence told him he was doing
wrong. He picked up au axe and
knocked the head of the other keg
iv and, (here he was interrupted by
tlie deacons starting the cry of
"Amen!" "Thank Uod!" "Glo
ry be to Clod!") After the house be
came quiet ho continued: "I
knocked in the head of that keg,
mill gave the boys a tin-cup and
told them to help themselves." It
was a case of premature enthusi
asm and the wicked scoffers iv the
audience had their turn to shout.
