The Santa Monica Laud Com pany are in correspondence with experienced deep-well borers, with tbe view, at au early day, of sink lag for artesian water lv the rear of town. They have also determined to enlarge and otherwise improve (be Santa Monica Hotel. We never bad such a sweet re minder of our forlorn condition, as we did last Thursday night. A party of young ladies, after sere nading a newly married couple, stopped at tbe Outlook office and sang, in their delightful, tantaliz ing way: No one to love, none to caress, Ac." Mr. Frank Crittenden, for some time a guest at the Santa Monica Hotel, came to the front last Thursday as the champion fisher man of the seasou. It appears that be bad provided himself with a large hook and strong line to catch a abark. But he was agreeably surprised by hooking an im mense "Jew fish," weighing 320 pounds. A number of persons were on tbe wharf at the time, all of whom went to the rescue. Mr. Clark, of Coltou, who happened to have his gun with him, put a charge of buck-shot into his ftsh sbip, which somewhat quieted his antics, ami Dually, after a lively time all round, tlie monster was dragged on the beach. Some harum-scarum scribbler writes the following paragraph for the Loa Angeles Republican: "Tbe worm whlcn has bored the piles of the Santa Monica wharf, It now turns out, Is uot the teredo at all, nor the limnora—tbe only two kinds of marine worm hereto fore known on the coast. The San ta Monica terror is of a uew spe cies, and makes a different and worse bore than either the teredo or the limnora." This is all bosh. The borers are not different from those found at San Buenaventura, Santa Barbara, or at other open sea wharves. A wharf will last as long here as at any point. But It appears that some of our magnanimous neigh bors are willing to avail themselves of tbe chance to :,'ive us k kick This Is one of the best roadsteads ou the coast, and It is only a ques tion of time when this port will be re-opened. And it ls uot improba ble, when the great railway Hues reach this coast, and the popula tion shall have sufficiently in creased, a breakwater will be built —reudering this the best harbor on the coast. Aud it may be that tlie big end of Los Angeles will some day drift down here, where drain age, aud grading is cheap, ami where epidemics never rage. "Fleetwood," the Los Angeles correspondent of the Post reads this lecture to 1110 San Francisco merchants In his Inst letter: "•Direct from the E*sl' is the leading card put out by two-thirds of our principal mercantile houses to attract the attention of tho pub lic. 'Direct from the East' will continue to be the cry until San Francisco meFeha'nis show more -interest in the welfare of the busi ness men ol Los Angeles. As an example, we have a great Fair here beginning; the 141 i i of this month, nnd I shall veu ture the prediction Uiut Chicago will be better represented than Ban Francisco. The merchants of our great city do not comprehend tbe length, breadth und. popula tion of the temtory they might control. Los Angeles, with her 20,01)0 inhabitant-; surrounded by 2,000,000 oraiiues trees, immense vineyards, numerous apiaries, hun dreds of thousands of acres of grain, and profitable mines of tin, plumba go,coal, silver and gold, never had as bright prospects as she has to-day. Immense mills are beingconstruit ed, magnificent business blocks and residences are being erected, schonlhouses anil churches are building, and everything points to ward a large population in the near future. A great opportunity is now opened to tlie people of San Francisco to show their interest in our prosperity." Lots for Sale! OR TH«— INSTALLMENT PLAN —Oft CHEAPFORC ASH.
