EDITORIAL CORRESPONDENCE. lbs Hotel del Moats—A Superb Flan and Colossal Improvements — Tbe Season at Monterey—lbo Illustrated Herald, Dear Herald: As tbe guest of Col. £. E. Hewitt, wbo came up to Han Francisco tbe other day from fala arduous duties at Los Angeles en • brief paseo combining busi ness and recreation, I paid a visit to Monterey and tba already famous Hotel del Monte. I bave In previous letters described tbe country between San Francisco and San Jose. Desiring to be economical In descriptive adject ive*, I will content myself witb aaylng tbat the country below San Jos* ia even lovlier than that nbove it. If that be possible. The Pejaro valley, particularly, would take the eye of any lover of the pic turesque. It ia linked rural sweet neaa long drawn out, nud ii char acterized by farm housea which, in expense of construction aud cosy suggestions of comforts, wnuli! rival those or the lamed Bluegrass region ot Keutucky or Chester oonnty, Pennsylvania. THE HOTEL DEL MONTE. Monterey ia one hundred and twenty-five miles from Ban Fran oUco, and tbe lightning express makes the trip in exactly four hours. We arrived just after dusk •nd were obliged to waif till morn ing to take a look at the splendid Improvements, which tbe railway oompany have made in a grove situated about a mile from the his toric old town. The construction Of tbe hotel itself was a miracle of expeditious work. On tbe 15th of February, 18S0, Mr. Charles Brown, the able aud energetic atebitect ot the Central und Bouliieru Pnciflc railways, was notified that be was expected to bave the edifice com pleted by the begiuuiug of the sea eon at Monterey, viz , the first of June. Iv the brief interval of three months and a half the foun dation was laid aud thu pediments •nd roof were iv place, witli every thing lv apple-pie order. This im mense hotel is built of wood, and every piece of timber iv it was turned out from the workshops of the company. The numerous prlnte of tbe hotel which are posted up In Los Augeles uud all over the State, have advised your readers of iti general design, but these cer tainly do not do justice to tbe building. It is of a mixed Queen Anne end Gothic style of atclii tecture, such as is very much iv vogue In Boston just now. A spa •lous verandah gives entrance to v grand lobby, ia which tbe office is located, aud from which a broad flight of stairs leads to the upper stories. A pleasing feature of Ibis lobby is a great tiled lireplsce, io - which, on solid dog-irnu9, great logs of wood are blaziug—a very acceptable thing indeed iv tbe climate of Monterey in the early mornings and eveniugi. Not every place has the divinely be nignant climate of Santa Mou lin and Sau Diego, und in tbe portions of the diy named Dame Nature needs a little kindly aatiatance. A Oue billiard to ;tu adjoins a parlor which might serve for a hall of princes, so lung ami broad and high Is it, aud to stimp tuou ly furnished. A capital ball room, also, forms a portion of this •Ida of the building. The dining room ia airy and inviting, and the numerous apartments of the hotel, arranged en tuitc, are models of elegance and home-like comfort. Within a short distance from the hotel is a club bouse, with ample stables at v further remove. Water la aupplied from wells aud iB pumped by steam. A gas-works, large enough for all possible de mands, Is also a feature of the Ho tel del Monte. THE onof.NDS. The surroundings of this Buperb pleasure retort bave beeu largely the gift of nature, but art bas lent • rery intelligent directing baud Id aeeurlng a fascinating result. The building is placed in a grove of gigantic pines, which have been thinned out and trimmed down to symmetry, guaranteeiug a shade which must be highly delightful during the mid-summer heats. Bin* grass lawne and extensive Md variegated parterres of flowers are encountered at every turn. Tbe visitors may ramble unchecked amidst scenes of both natural and artificial beauty, and these charm log walk* are being steadily ex tended on every aide. Tbe prosaic train U that lavish outlay* of aaoaey. harmonising with tbe bounty of nature, have really se cured to the pleasure-seekerafalry like oolgne of vantage within a mile nf tbe Interesting but sleepy town of Monterey. Taking into the couut all of tbe expandi turea of tbe oompany, it is proba bly no exaggeratlou to say that half a million dollars bave been paid out in tbe neighborhood of Monterey during the past fifteen or sixteen mouths by tho railway company. I could not help keenly regretting tbat this largo sum bail not beeu speut upon Saula Moulca. with tbe result of giving to tlie people of the whole United States an unrivaled watering place which would bave been equally attractive both In summer and winter. In a subsequent letter I shall bavo something to siy about the famous old town which was once tbe capital of California anil theiu Imitable drivo of seventeen miles which bas been created as uu ad junct of tbe Hotel del Monte. THE ILLUSTRATED HF.mI.IV I bave been very much annoyed by the delay which lias been un avoidable In engraving a panoram ic view of the city of Los Angeles, and which has postponed tbe ap pearance of the Illustrated Herald. lam assured by tbo en graver, however, that tho work is well worth the delay nud that it will be a highly artistic produc tion. It will be issued soma time next week. J. D. L. San Franclsoo, Muy 20th, LAST NIGHT'S NEWS. ISpecial to tbo llhkai.d by the Western TJulou Telegraph Company.l PACIFIC COAST. STOCK REPORT. Under these ciroumstances, a man at Chicago, for iuttauoe, might get a cut rate which lus neighbor might not enjoy, but the Governor could not See how tbe practice of making discrimination* between partial living ii) tbe same towu could be justified ex cept iv special circumstances. His road has never made such discriminations at any one period of its history, nor dues the Govern or believe that any road makes a practice of discriminating rates be cause of favoritism to any individ ual. It is unbusiuesi-hke. Dots a banker loan money to a friend cheaper than to a H'.ranger, other tilings beiug equal V Is it n rule of business to show favoritism iv this way? "How about, the anti-mo nopoly movement?" GoV. Stan ford did not think it would last much longer than the granger movement did. Jiolh are founded ou false premises. It is incorrect tooall v railroad a monopoly. The only reil monopolies in this coun try are those created by the patent iaWB. For instance, the Governor understands that J. B. Tburber (who is so active in the nnti-mo uopoly movement) bas v patent for mukiug oleomargarine, and If he was so dishonest as to sell it as butter, aud no oue could enter into competition witb him. that would be a monopoly. On ttie other hand, uuder the corporation laws of California, a fee of $10 will pay for articles of incorporation that will enable a company to build a like railroad in the Stato parallel to his own. A stock company is not a corporation; it is a co-opera tion. It is liable to error, of course, in common with all such institu tions, nut it is more likely uniform* lyjust than an Individual woulo be. A railroad company lays down for the couduct of Its employees laws which the common sense of business tlematids. Tbe employees cannot, deviate from thess laws. I'hey are given no latitude for in dividual judgment or caprice. On the other haud the merchant is his own master.
