A Glance at the Newspaper Histo ry of Los Angeles. [Ssnta Ana Herald. | Ia tbe year 1851 tbe first paper Was publiebt d iv tbe couuty, iv tbe city of Los Augeles. It was called the Scar, ami t ne halt was printed in Spanish and the other half in English. Up to about the middle of the year 1854 the Star had no rival, then a new paper ap peared. It was called the South ern Oalifornian, and was printed entirely in tbe English language. Tbe paper changed title, some time after, and was called tbe Southern Vineyard, and died iv 1860, after a desperate struggle for existence. Shortly after the publi cation of the Southern Californian, the Star discarded tbe Spanish fea ture, and in 1856 El Clamor Pub lico (The Voice of the People) made its appearance. Thus three papers huug on the ragged edsrn ot dC ipalr up to 1860, when the Vine yard wilted aud bloomed no more, wild the Clamor hushed its thun derous cry and sang its plaintive song no more. In Jauuary, 1860, tbe Semi-Weekly News made its appearanoe, published by the ed itor of tbe Santa Ana Herald, who bad, for six years previous thereto, been connected with the Mar. In '63 or '64 tbe Star ceased to shine, aud in the five counties of South ern California but one newspaper (the News) was published, doing the legal advertising and nearly all other work required. These coun ties, however, being epsrsely pop ulated, one cun hardly Imagine the publisher would become a mil lionaire, even though he did get a "fat take" occasionally. In 1868 the San Diego Union was estab lished, in 1868 the Star was re established, and In 1870 tbe first pa per outside tbe city, tbe Anabeim Gazette, was started with material •old to John Fischer and others by the proprietor of tbe News, who bad purchased the material from two defunct newspapers. From tbis time forward the fun bas grown fast and furious—newspa pers have been constantly starting into existence, some having an ephemeral life, while other* yet eke out a precarious support, which the public grudgingly accord tbem. Tbe business is overdone, but per haps the Darwinian theory will hold good iv this respect. L G. Sresovich & Co., Han Francisoo, San Jose aud Los.
