About S o'clock last evening sn Eng lishman abont 30 years of age, named Harry Evans, attempted suicide in the reading room of the Public Library in the Downey Block, and fell suddenly from his ohair, where he was re .ding a book. He was evidently badly intoxicated, as it took six men to hold htm. He had two bottles on his person, one labeled laudanum aad the other chloroform. At first it was supposed that be had tal • I ths last named instrument of death, but it was afterwards proved by Drs. Han non and Shorn that he had taken an overdose of laudanum. A strong emetia was administered to him, and ke promptly threw up the poisonous dose. The two bottles are at the office of the city librarian. Officers Maxey, Coonsy and Botello assisted him to the "cooler," at times being by necessity as listed by three citizens, requiring six in all. Ths would-be suicide is now do ing well, but will be connned nntil he is ashamed of his suicidal mania. Mr. Evans is a fine looking gentleman, and the cause of his attempted suicide is as yet unknown, as he is so far unable to explain it Tba facts will probably be known to-day. The HtraXd cf yesterday advised the i eprovement of the si L-walk on the north aids of Commercial street, from Main street to tbo depot, tx ept where "stone or asphalt an sidewalks exist. A measurement made yesterday shows that the distance required for a substantial sidewalk, where it is now ro' ten, is but 210 feet; that is, after the new Mc- Laughlin sidewalk is laid. This dis tance is a mere bagatelle, and tho rot ten, dangerous wood should be removed at once. This is one cf the most exten sively traveled streets in the city—per haps ths third, Main and Spring being uhead. Hacks, wagon*, carriages and pedestrians throng ths street to and train tho twelve local train* which pass snd repass daily, besides ths ordinary busiosss of tba street. Bat about two thirds cf tho passengers ass tbe south sidewalk, which is much worse than tbat ou the north. From Main to Loa An to es street, where made of wood, it is ia fair condition; but further down is rotten and dangerous. The only brea part of it is in front of Smith's Hotel, on it.is side, which is the most traveled. The distance which should be improved is 647 feet, or, east of Los Angeles street, 610 feet, making but an outire distance of 215 yards. This important work should be commenced at ouqo by tho parties interested, and give us some decent way of reaching the old depot, ! t would redound to their credit. The orange crop of the Santa Ana .al ley will be quite abort this season. It will not, we understand, exceed half the usual jiild, though the fruit promises to be excellent. Mr. J. N. Smith is pur cha>ing the bulk of tbe crop, having al ready fourteen oarloads engaged. He is paying $2 a box for oranges un the truss, which nmy be considered a good price. It Is probable tbat the moat of theae oranges will be shipped Eut, though it is too early yet to say what will be done. Mr. Smith purchased nearly 100 tons of tho arplo crop of the Santa Ana valley, which he haa ditposed of, and aow will move the orange crop. Such mining men are a great advantage to tins val ley. He * ill pay for these fourteen car loads (which will, at 300 boxes to tbe ear, a incut to 4200 box, s) $8400. Last year this valley exported 36.326 boles of oranges. If we hare halt a crop this season it will thus amount to 18,163 boxes, or a value, at $2 a box, of 136, --326. It may turn oat eveu bettor than this.—Sanfo Ana Herald. At a Bargain OUR GRAMMAR.
