O.ntabio. Sept. 13.—Some fifty news
papers printed id Canada bavt* declared
m favor of Canadian independence. This
is but a small portion of tbe whole press
of the Dominion, but it embraces a
number of widely circulated and influen
tial journals that have a very large
educative influence in the country. Also,
worthy of note, is tbe fact that at the
re. ent National Congrtss of French Ca
nt li* a, he d iv M ntreal, ia celebrate n
the fete of St. Jean Baptist, two
Judges of tbe Superior Court of Quebec,
tbe Hon. Messrs. Hicotte aud Loi auger,
and 'ho Hon. Mr. Boyde, a mau ol some
public note, expressed their decided con
viction that in the near future Canada
will be called upon tc form su independ
ent nation. Sir Francis Hicks, in a paper
ou the future of Canada, declares that
'there is not the slightest ground for
believing that the oonHeuiiou witb Great
Britain is in the slightest dauger of being
dissolved."

Tolono, Sept. 13.— The interest in
gas wells baa received ao awakening in
this locality by the success of a new well
just made on the farm wf Menxo Danlap,
near tiavoy. Enoch Robins of tb<e place
was boring the Will to secure a yertna*
nest supply uf water when, at tbe depth
of ninety-three feet, be penetrated a
vein of gas of such force aud volume
that stunts two and three inches in
diameter were thrown 200 feet iv tlie air,
aod water and sand weut up forty feet,
making a terrific noise. Mr. Robinson
connected the gas with bis six-horse*
power engine, and secured as much
power as be could get for tiny
pounds of steam, while the steam-gauge
indicated only twenty pounds ol gas
Tne gas was then connected with the
furnace, and, when ignited, a small part
of it created sufficient flame to keep up
steam, aud it was used to run the engine
■ attached to tbe well-boring apparatus
Friday and Saturday. It is estimated
that tne present volume of gas escaping
from tne well would be sufficient to
make steam for a 200 horse-power en
gine.

Niw York, Sept. 13.—Tbe Tarn > uuy
address to the public h s produced a
profound sensation ia political circles.
To-day it is the main topic of conversa
tion. The Republicans are jubilant,
and the Democrats for tbe nio»t part
depressed. While the leaders of Tain*
mauy propose to suppjrt Cleveland, it
will be in a faint w*y. The Sun pre
dicts Cleveland's defeat by an over
whelming majority. The World, on the
other hail, *«ys that witb tne aid of
Tammany tbe ticket will go through;
bat much work will be required. A i
dispatch from Albany s ales mat Cleve
land, though cheerful, is reticent. The
harsh words sjwken by Tammany affect
him keenly.
A Rehear Ins Aniied.
Has Francisco, Sept. 13.—A petition
fey rehearing uf the case ot MoP hereon
♦a. Bertlett, involving tbe question uf
the election of Senators in the udd uu in
hered districts, was tilod iv the Supreme
Court yesterduy by tbe attorneys tor re
spondent. The petitiou ia based upon
tbe feet that tbis important jadgroeat
rests only upon a bare majority of the
members of tbe Court, and a rehearing
is prayed for to satisfy the public that
thorough consider*.ion of the matter
has been had after most elaborate argu
ment has been presented.
