A WEALTHY TOWN.
Man Bernardino City nnd Its Illch
Surround ln«».
No city in Southern California has bet
ter prospects than San Bernardino for
•growth nnd wealth. It has a solid basis
for prospirity and "progress iv its rich
soil, abundaucoof water and great crops
of grain, ultulfa, oranges, limes, lemons,
apples, apricots, pears, peaches, grapes,
lino wines, cheap lumber, lime, marble,
brick and granite, that surround the an
cient town on all sides.
Tho city proper is but a milo square
and has Boa public buildings of all
kinds. It is free from debt and tho
people are increasing in wealth at a rapid
rate. It is iv fact a solid town finan
cially. It is v hard place to buy mort
gages at high ratc3 of interest. It hat
bronil, straight streets eighty-two nnd
a-half feet wide, surrounding blocks 500
feet square, with an abundance of shade
trees and strenns ot water from flowing
wells, au op. ra house, electric light, v
dummy railway to ColtOD four miles
south on the Southern Pacific Railroad,
und a street railw iy, with Iho Atchisou,
Topeka nud Santa l'"c on the west side of
town, at the junction of the Los Angeles
and San Bernardino aud the Riverside
and Sun Df-go lines of railway. A new
road is planned to be built by the South
ern I'acilic Company from Alhambia,
through Pasadena, Lnmanda Park,
Santa Anita, Monrovia, Duarte, Asuse,
Alosta, Citrus, Sau Dimns, Pomona, On
tario and Cue imonga to this town, which
it will encircle arouud in the citrus and
vineyard belt that lies on the west,
north nnd east aide of the city. This
line will puss through Highlands, Craf
ton, Lugouia, Rtdlauds, Old San Ber
nardino, probably nenr Brookside, to thu
main line of tbe Southern Pacific Com
pany as it starts up tho Sau Gorgonio
Heights. Such a road would pass
through about seventy-live miles oi
citrus fruit laud, of which half is already
plauted in orchard aud vineyard at the
present time.
It is needless to siy that this fruit
belt railroad would give San Bernardino
a tremendous boom and double its pop
ulation iv two years. Sau Bernardino
city and county has doubled in ils in
habitants in thu 1 ist three years, nnd is
likely to make the same progress iv
the next throe years.
The city bus strong banks with ample
capital, lumber aud brick yards with
•ample supplus, half a docan hotels, in
cluding tho well-known Starke's, the
Southern, St. Charles and others, the
new hotel oi tho A., T. & S. F , ou the
west side of the city, aud the great Ar
row Head Hot Spiiugs hotel, six miles
north of the city, on tho side of tbe
mountains about -."it'll feet above sea
level. This famous hotol is open sum
mer and winter. The wa'.er from the
springs has a temperature of 190°, aud
affords a natural steam bath at all times.
The wafer is carried iv iron pipes direct
to and through the hotol, which it
warms and keeps at au eveu temperature
day aud night, without aid from stoves
and furnaces.
Tho hotel ia on the side of the loftier
peaks of tho Sierra Madre, and a trail
liads to the lop, 11,200 feet high, from
which the view is rapturous. Perpet
ual suow reßts on the north aide of these
peaks, while charming trout streams
gush out of tho sunny side of their
rocky breasts.
Mud baths are given hot and thick,
and diseases of many kinds are rapidly
oured ui.der the treatment of steam
baths, hot baths, swimming baths,
Swedish treatment, and ufier these a
good square meal in thu gnat hotel,
with its frontages of 300 feet in leugth.
The busiuesa blocks of tho city are of
brick and mostly of modern aud excel- '
lent construction. Alnong them are tho
Anderson, Aucker, Burt, Calliuau,
Cochrane, Davis, Garner, Kenistou,
Knrts & Mcc, Lehman, Masotuo Hall,
McDonald, New RufTeu, Odd Fellows',
Sair.sevaiu, Sutter white & Curtis, South
ern Hotel, St u-kci's Hotel, Suverkrup,
Van Doriu, Waters & Bnnkmcyer ami
the Wixom Bock.
The largest bnlldtag in the city is now
being erected on tho corner of Third
aud D streets. It is to be n magnificent
three-story hotel and finished with ele
gance aud furnished with all modern
improvements, It ia being built by a
stock company aud is to cost $100,000.
A new hue county hospital costing
$20,000 has recently beeu erected of
brick on Third street. Building opera
tions arc vwry active ou all sides aud the
city is enjoying a genuine boom.
Tho ciiy has four daily papers, the
Courier, Times, Judex and Gazette, all
of which seem to bo thriving. One of
the finest newspaper offices lv the couu
try is the new outfit of tho Courier, and
one of the most alive editors in the
State, Arthur Kearney, ia runnirg it
with his cultured aud tireless energy.
Space will uot permit more minute
description to-day of that most prosper
ous town.
St. Jacobs Oil is the antidote to pain, to
matter by what it is caused.
Cure for Piles.
PILES are frequently preceded by a sense
of weight in tha back, loins aud lower part
of the abdomen, causing the patient to sup
pose he has some affection of the kidneys or
neighboring organs. At times, symptoms
of indigestion are present, flatuleucy, un
easiness of the stomach, etc. A moisture
like perspiration, producing a very disa
greoable itching, after getting warm, is a
common attendant. Blind, bleeding and
Itching piles yield at once to the application
of Dr. Bosnnko's Pile Remedy, which actß
directly upon the parts affected, absorbing
the tumors, allaying the intense itching,
and effecting a permanent cure. Price 60
cents. Address the Bosauko Medicine Co.,

There Is a certain class of remedies for con
