THE GOLD BRICK.
The Preliminary Kxamlnutioll
ol William It llcliie.
The examination of William Ritchie,
charged with participating in the at
tempt to obtain mouey on a que tiouable
gold brick, came up before Justice Aus
tin yesterday and tho story of the arrest
as made public at that time was re
peated. The first witness called was
thu man Huyett, who testified that
Ritchie, together with Johnson and
others, had attempted to swindle him
out of $3000 on the 10th or 17th of last
month. After Huyelt's testimony waa
all in he wns locked up in the jury-room
at the request of counsel for defense.
Chief Skinner and Officer Lynch de
tailed their relation to the affair in al
most the same language as published at
the time, und the man wuo mide sev
eral tests of the brick waa placed on the
witness stand aud stated that lie had
bored into it ami found it to consist of
copper, zinc and Send, without it trace
of gold. When the prosecution had
closed, the defense placed defendant,
William Rilchie, on ihe stand to tell his
version of the affair. Ritchie stated
that he first made Huyeit'a acquaintance
id a faro game where both had lost
money. Afterwards they had recovered
the money lost and quit even. Huyett
then treated him to dinner aud became
quite friendly. Some time afterward he
met Huyett' and that person hatl (old
him that he had lost soma money out at
the park. He nl»o stated that he had
been offered a gold brick which he could
buy at half its value, nud said that the
party offered it to hint because he wanted
to get his frieud out of jail. Huyett
asked his advice about it, aud Ritchie
told him that if tho brick was good he
would like to huvo the chance to buy it,
but lie was not able to do so. Huyett
also asked him how he could tell whether
it was gold, and witness had told him
that he could take it to a jeweler's store;
but Huyett told him that tbe WM who
wanted to sell it did not want to do
that. A short time afterwards Johnson,
whom they hatl Seen a: thu faro game,
came up to them and introduced himself.
He had gone with Huyett to the room
on Commercial sireet, aud had also goao
with him to a jeweler's to have some of
the shavings of the brick examined, but
after ho had left Huyett he heard that
Huyett had been arrested, and had gone
home, where be stayed until arretted,
except that ou the day before his hrrcsi,
seeing the fuss made about it in tbe pa
pers-, he had gone to tho depot, intending
to leave, but had changed his mind nnd
gone back home. He denied that he
knew any of the parties who attempted
thu swindle, but admitted that he played
faro too much. The defense placed wit
nesses on tho stand to prove that Huycit
had remained at home- over the Sunday
jrevious to his arrest, His wile was pres
ent in the courtroom and appeared to be
very nervous. The case will be argued
for an hour this morning.
