A Riversider Puts in a Demurrer.
Editor Herald—The reasons which tbs Riverside Press offers for Ihe post ponement of the Citrus Fair entirely justify your indignation. Permit me to suggest that so foolish a proteose was not mado by the citizens of Riverside, and that therefore they should not re ceive, at your hands, the punishment due for so indiscreet ami uncalled for on Act. These annual fairs at Riverside have, during a neries of years, entailed a gre.it amount of work, which has prin cipally been (lone by a few individuals, who are now unwilling to again assume it. They have not, from tho first, fa vorod the holding of a fair this season, but their opinions were overruled through the efforts of somo who have heretofore manilcsted much disposition to do the inevitable drudging they al ways entail. In the reoent meotl: «oi,!J"S committee, many reasons were doubtless urged by them in favor of a postpone ment, and among these, unquestionably, the very foolish one which Mr. Holt alone g yes. The citizens of Riverside are well aware thnt no epidemic exists which would justify fear on the part of anyone, and Ihe editor of tho Press knows that if such au argument was used that it was noneense, and had no weight in dooiding tho action of the the committee. The ohagrin of the ed itor, at the defeat of a measure he deemed it advisable to carry forward, no doubt accounts for his giviug pub licity to a debate not intended for pub lication, and it, seems lo mo that the blame for so ill-advised a course should rest upou him, rather than upon the neople of Riverside, who certainly ap preciate, nnd have reoiprooated the many kind words which tho Herald and other Los Angeles papers have of fered in our behalf. The manifestation of friendly interest toward all sections, bas been • gratifying feature of our ex perience here daring the last three months, and it is earnestly hoped that it may continue in spite of individual narrowness and leittahness. H:is not the Herald, in a moment of justifiable angor, given a greater publicity to a foolish action than wns necessary? E. \V. Holmes, Riverside Agency. Los Angeles, March 1, 1887. Senator Fair is b?ck in Washington, aud his peculiarities aro onoe more uu der discussion. Ho distrusts every one, and nets solely on his owu information and judgment in all mattrrs. A number of years ago, when he was engigsd in actively superintending one of his min ing properties, he directed the boss in one of his mines to have a wrought iron crank made at a cerium aug.e. The foreman told him that it was impossible. Mr. Fair then went iuto the work.3 at the mouth of the mine, put on a workman's apron and cap, and begun the work of making the crank himself, at the angle which ho had de scribed. The foreman iv chargo of that room coming around, saw a workman, ns he supposed, disobeying order in wasting property by trying to make what had already been declared to be an impossi bility. He picked up a pieco or iron and knocked the amateur workman down just as he was completing the piece of work. This blow fractured Fair's brull. Hia life wat saved ouly through trepanning. Mr. Fair has to-day a small silver plate in the top of his head. After he recovered he felt very uncomfortable. He felt symptoms of a brain trouble. After a time he went back to tho sur geon and said: "I am certain that that job was not well done; there is ft splin ter left in that wound—l can feel the prick of it." The surgeon at first would net listen to Mr. Fair, but he insisted upon having it done over egaiu. The surgeon then discovered that there was a splinter, and that if tho Senator had not himself discovered the cause of his trouble, bU brain would have been af fected in a short time beyond the hope of recovery.—[Denver Tribune.
