INQUIRIES FROM ABROAD. Letters of Inquiries From Teach ers aud Artists. We take the liberty of publishing the following letter from three young men who wish to establish a Military Academy in an eligible western city: Chapel Hill, N. C, Feb. 25, 1887. Editor Herald—We, the undersign ed, are Btudeuta iv this iuslitutiou und believing tbat there are better oppor tunities for cducato l men in the West than in North Carolina, are desirous of emigrating 84 soon as.wu graduate, which will" bo next June. We are taking special courses. Oue of us is preparing himself lv civil and min ing ongineeriug, another in mathematics, Latin and Greek, and a third in English, Oermau and French. Now, we wish to go weat aud set up a first-class Military Academy for boys of from 12 to 21 years old, and wo wish to ask your advice as to Los Angelci as a suitable location, and yonr opinion as to how your people would patronize an institution of tho kind. Wo would wish to establish a school, which would not only attract pupils from the vicinity, but from all parts of the State and from adjoining States. We wish to know what thi people think of education. Aro they thoroughly aroused on the subject ? If we could bo assured of a sufficient num ber of pupils, we would have an officer detailed from the Uuited States Military Academy at West Point, to act as in structor in military tactics. Wo would esteem it a great fuvor if you would kind ly give us your advice unci opinion ou the subject, aud auy information concerning schools, saluries paid teachers, etc., Mould be cordially received. Yours, very truly, R. N. Hackbtt, L. B. Edwards, Vkrnox w. Long. In reply to our young friends we would say that their scheme strikes us as one worthy of Berious consideration. A lirst-clai-i military academy estab lished here would arrest thu attention of the.entire section, aud s«cure, we have no doubt, a paying patronage. Of course the success of the institution would depend very materially upon tbe character of its conduct. If it were • "lirst class," as tbe gentlemen propose to make it, we have no doubt whatever that it would Bticceed. There is only one institution of the kind we can call to mind iv California, and that is the McClure Academy at Oikland. Tbat has betu a very decided success. But a military academy established bore would have tbo advantage of meeting the wants of a sectiou that is rapidly increasing in wealth and population, and which is destined to become one of . the most nourishing centers on the con tinent. Young men of capacity anil am bition, who will devote their entire en- i ergies to the building.up of tuch au academy hero will lay the foundation I for their own fortunes aud for an insti tution which will bring thorn lasting , fame in the end. Our people are en thusiastically devoted to the cause of education, and they would give such hearty welcome to the inauguration of an in-titution of this kind as would en courage its founders iv puttiug forth every effort toward its success. Here is another letter of Inquiry which we prot'er to answer iv priut rather thau by private correspondence: New Haven, Conn., Feb. 27, 1887. Editor Herald — Would you be kind duough to inform mo whether there would be auy chance for me iv Los Au geies as a wood engraver (engraving on wood for printers to print from, such il- | lustrations as are In catalogues of manu- i facturers and in paper* aud books; all ' kinds of wood engravings). If you would be kind enough to inform me abont it I would be very much obliged and would gladly pay whatever excuses are involved with it. Hoping that 1 will Boon hear from you, I am Yours very respectfully, Trio, Kal'p, 08 Vernon street, New Haven, Conn. Mr. Ripp, if be is a first-class artist, I could uot do better than to set up an atelier in Los Angeles. The printers here ate very numerous, and there is always demauii for good wood-cuts. If Mr. • Rapp wishes to test his fortune outside ! of New Haven, he could not do better , than to try Los Angeles. "Read me fer my cause and be patient that ye may read."—Shakespeare.
