LANDS In Central California, for sale by Edwin K. Alsip & Co., REAL ESTATE AGENTS, No. 1015 Fourth Street, Sacramento. THE CITY OF AZUSA. A Large Plan of Operations Decided Upon. A BEAUTIFUL SITE SELECTED.' The Directors of the Azusa Land and Water Company in Council. The 10:30 morning train Tuesday on the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Vullcy railroad leaped ont of the fog that ban camped over night in the city and was soon iv the high, warm uplands of the San Gabriel vulley, iv the favored fruit belt of America. Among the passengers were tho follow ing oilioers and stockhol ders of the Azusa Liud and Water Coin piny, embracing the President, Mr. J. S. Slanajn; J. Siauso i, Secretary, aud the following Directors: Hon. J. D.Biek nell, J. M. D-ivies, F. C. Howis a: d ii E. Hill. Tho tr.iin, drawn by locomo tive No. 3, flew through Highlnntl P.»rk, Garvanz i, Lincoln Park aud South and North Pasmleua with a triumphant flight, pa%t Oiivewood, Lanianda Park, Santa Anita, Monrovia, DuurtJ and theu started for the end of the track, rattling over the numerous new strong bridges over the San Gabriel aud its branches, till the farther side and the end of the track were roache I. At that point a large number of men were at work laying track, distributing ties and rails, while on beyond a gang of thirty-live men were grading a bed for the approaching track. Here Mr. Slauson had arranged a team to oonvey the directors and guests, including the son of Mr. Davies und a representative of the Herald, who has attended more christening of towusites thau any other person in tho c >unty, through the trails in the chappair.il to th; central porti n of the great Azusa Rancho, the proper y of the Azusa L md and Water Compau>, consisting of 4000 acres of choice fruit and orain land '1 his magnificent domain lies twenty two in ilea uoiiHeascot Los Angtaus, on the east side of the San Gabriel river, where It emerges from the Sierra Madie mountains.. It is about two and a half miles square, and slopes gradually lo the south in a moat i erf ecu manner fci irrigation. Tbe soil is mellow and deep, and con sists of sandy and gravelly loam, with a large amount of vegetable mold in it< composition. It is well protected from winds, is from 500 to 900 feet above the sea. and has a temperature about 10 de grees above that of the city of Los Au geles. Part of this grand tract of land was patented many years ago to Henry Da. ton, and part ot it was railroad laud. The land extends along the base of the mountains, taking in the upper portion of the great Coviua ditch, from which it has a fine water right on the highest part of tbe laud. The eastern portion takes in the old Dalton vineyard and orchard und the old adobe dwellings built a generation ago, and extends down to the Ceutro schoolhonse at the south end. The western boundary is the San Gabriel river. Tbo compiny has a water right in the San Gabriel cxfion, below the Coviua ditch, and will bring this out on the tract in a cemented ditch iulo a series of reservoirs, fr< m which iron pipes will convey it down over the land along the great avenue* 100 feet iv width. There will bo abundant water-powei for making tl ctric light and for running the machinery cf a planum,' mill anil lumber factory, which willihere be estab lished. SANITARY FEATURE. The Directors contemplate having a city of 10.000 persons iv a few years, a id iv view of tli ,t fact will be wise in time and lay a sewer of cement down the great central aveuue wheu the road is being graded. This new feature will outrank in wisdom all other new settle ments, and the cost will be tr fling to each purchaser of a lot and will be an inducement to settlers lo purchase there. In this plan Azusa leads all the rent of her Bister colonies. After a careful examination of tbe land yestetduy it was decided to locate the business city on ihe line of the L s Angeles and Sau Gabriel Valley railroatl about half a mile or a little moro from the base of the mountains, aud three quarters of a mile west of the old Dal ton vineyard. A strip of land '2000 feet long and 250 feet wide will he allotted for railroad buildings and track' near the center of the townsite of 640 acres Tho central avenues, east and west and north and south, will be devoted to business purposes; next will be lots 50x 150 feet for residence places; and around these two and a half, five, ten and twenty-acre fields will be sold fur villas and orchards and vineyards. As this land is the finest kind of s?il for citrus fruits and raisin grapes it is quite likely that it will s ion be known us a great point of shipment for oranges, wine and raisins. At the rale the track of the railway is being laid it is supposed that the cars will run into Azusa inside of two weeks. All the offioers were delighted with the location of the townsite and enthusiastic in praise and admiration of the noble properly. Azusa now claims rank among the new colonies of Southern California. The Express cites the oase of a lady whs, while returning from chnrch last Sunday, boarded a Second-street cable car and found that she had given all her change to the church and bad not the wherewitha Ito pay her car fare. She, being well known, spoke to the conduotor about her scarcity of funds, and uot liking his reply left the oar and started borne on foot. She beat the time of the car several minutes in a half mill. The Express is mistaken. The Second-street cable oars run very swift ly. Iv fact, a few weeks ago oue of tbe cars ran so swiftly that it forgot to stop at the end of the line on Second street and ran a considerable distanoe into Spring street. The man who presides over the destinies of this cable Hue should see to it that Ihe brakes are in good order, for if the cable was to break coming down Second street hill the car would not stop much short of the rivor. Au extra brakeman should be provided for each car. A Splendid Likeness. There is on exhibition at Sanborn & Vail Art store on South Spring street an exoellent pastel portrait of Mrs. \V. K. Beeson, tbe well-known singer. The likeness, which is so sti iking and natu ral, renders it exceedingly satisfactory to Mrs. Beeson and her friends. Mr. Edwin I Ames, the artist who executed the picture, is a recent arrival from Boston, and has made an enviable repu tation for himself by his fine workman ship. • Compliments of Colton.
