March2l,lßS7 Editjk Hhbalu — Hesperia ia the rather pretty name given the new colony north of San Bernardino thirty six miles, and where I have had a force of men at work for two months past grading the towasite, digging water, trenohes, eto. The site ia a beautiful one, and is now covered by the yucca and oedar, and also at tbia season wi h natural grasses and wild flowers. Of ths 32,000 acres in the colony I believe every sere to be tillable. The soil is a virjr rich, disintegrated granite loam, sal will certainly produce the ohoictst kinds of deoiduous fruits. Apples, c if nits and grapes will find a | eriec' home hers. The o'imate is prob.bly without an equd in Sout hern Cahfornia, tne elevation of Oter 3000 feet guuran tetiog absolute freedom f orn fogs, and a clear, diy stm aphere aimilir to tbat i f -Colorado. The winter months are a trifle cold, aooompanied by a small amount ol snow, while the weather fir he baUi cc of the year ia similar to that of the walleye below, excepting all danipmss and fogs. Hesperia is certainly the spoi for invalids. Duri g the past two months 1 have had a large force of meu at work diggirg a ditch, a x miles long, in which to lay a pipe line to convey wa er ovei the traoL In the entire length of the ditch not a stone wns t'ouud and ihe ground was moiat a distance of four feet below tbe surface, there being no change in the cbarae'er of the soil, thus making it adaptable for cultivation. Forty aores of barl y have been sown near the towns te and is putting forth nioely. Work will commence at once on tbe grading of streets and a large number of pipe ditohe--, which will m..lt it the beat watered tract in California, the supply being inexhaustible. Hes peria is located ou the line of the "Santa Fe" route and will soon have a new depot and a hotel, 100x40, tbe latter to be built cf granite. The place, on ac count of its excellent location and fine soil and climate, is, I thii.k, certain to be numbered aim ng our prosperous colonies of tbe iic-t future. Yours respectfully, O. B Fuller.
