BURBANK. Another New Suburb o the Metropolis. BEAUTIFUL BURBANK CITY. A Beautiful Site for Homes in a Land of Richness and Perpet ual Flowers. The Providencia Ranoho, extending across the valley of the, Los Angeles river ten miles north of the city of Los Angeles, from the Providencia moun tains through tho Los Angeles valley to the San Francisco Maria mountain, con taining 17,000 acres, is a rare spot of earth, especially' favored in every way by nature. The south end ia occupied with beautiful hit's, embellished with shrubbery and valleys of evergreen oake. In this locality are perennial springs and lakelets and orchards of evergreen oak. In the plain along the sources of the Los Angeles liver are thousands of acres of tbe very finest of alluvial soil on whioh large and lusty ii Ida of grain are growing most luxuriantly. The Soutberu Paoilic Company has its great transcontinental line at the north era side of this rich plain and stops trains for the new oity on signal. From the lowland plain the tra •( commences to rise towards the moun tain on the northeast at the rate of 150 to 300 feet per mile. On this magiiti cent elope the townsite of Burbank has been selected, a side traok laid and a depot established to be known bb Bur bank, named after the former proprietor of the rancho. This beautiful plain ex tending from the railway to the moun tain is a glorious pieca of land that is a proud faotor in the wealth of the State. The soil is matchless, the situation ad mirable for health and beautiful scenery. Ou the west the great San Fernando val ley displays its hundred thousand acres of grain; on the north the great Sau Francisco Maria mountain i? a barrier against the winds of winter; on the south west the low mountains of Providencia and Cahnenga, clothed in emerald robes are a perpetual delight while on the east and south the great vall-y of the Lob Angelea river, with its fields and homes of beanty, embracing Glen dale, tha riverdaU villas and the city of Los Angeles, complete the frame which nature has made for this beautiful town. The soil is a sandy loam, fnll of vegeta ble mold, easily tilled and free from all adobe or baking soils of any kind. It is the perfection of choice lrui t land for both deciduous and semi-tropical fruits. On the north side of tho railway ex tending from the track lo tbo mountain is a tract of 500 acres laid out into lots for the bnsinesß part of the city of Burbank. A broad, straight avenue 100 feet wido exteuda from the depot to the mountains, named Olive avenue, flanked on each side with Orange Grove avenue and Angeltno avenue, 80 fett in width, the othtr avenuess parallel are Cypress, Magnolia, Palm, Verdugo, Tujunga and Providenoia avenues, 60 feet in width. The cross streets are numbered after Front street, which is the railroad street 150 feet in width, as First, Second, Third, Fourth and so on up to the moun tain. The lots on tbe live central aven ues are 50x155 feet, with alleys in rear. On the outer avenues the lots are 350* 116 feet, just the right size for a home and a garden of fruit. On tne uppir side of the tract a tun nel has been thrust into the side of the mountain, about a mile and a half from the depot and 400 feet above If, from which comes a line stream oi pure mountain water that ia carried in iron pipes to every lot in the settlement. A Urge ctmented reservoir is being made at tbe base of tbe mountain that will hold 2,000,000 gallons of water, so the supply for the town will be ample. All tbe streets and avenues are being graded, and that por tion of the upland that is covered with brush is being cleared by the company. A hue hotel to oost #50,000 is being constructed by Dr. Burbank, and nine other houses that are to cost in tbe aggregate $50,000, arc under cou tract to •be commenced by tho 15th of May and Completed by August next. The names of the following gentlemen who are the proprietors of the property are a suffi cient guaranty of their ability to carry out their contracts: L. T. Garnsey. President; David Burbank, J. Downey Harvey, H. L. Macneil, T. W. T. Rich ards, E. E, Hall, George W. X ng, W. H. Gouober, J. A. Fillmore and Senator McFadden. Their large capital and great rnergy are su eto make the lettleuunta nccasi. These gentlemen purchased Ihe great rancho, a large part of which is covered with grain, for 9258,000. which they have pa d. They have, within the past mouth, sold over $300,000 worth of the land, and are selling daily at a rapid rate. They can accommodate all classes of bnyers—those who want a business lot at the depot, those who want a resi dence lot, those who prefer an acre or a five or ten or 100 aero tract, either on the high mesas or in the moist land aronnd the laguna. They will open an office at Burbank station this week, with telephone connection with the prin cipal office in this city, in Bryson Block, Spring street. All the prospects of Burbank seem auspicious, and indicate that it will soon be a great and prosperous settlement, filled with a nappy and cultured pop ulation. ARMY ORDERS. We beg to call your attention to an article we aro manufacturing for tie purpose of eradicating and destroying tho Scale Bug, Harvest Flies, Tree Hoppers, Plant Lice, Etc. It has been fully tested by tha Agricultural Department of the State University, and pronounced a success, the endorsement of which we append. It Is put up in convenient forms for use. Tbe chemicals employed iv same will not hurt the most tender bush, as has been lully demonstrated. Ills put up iv liquid form ready for use in barrels and S-gallnn cans, and In paste form in 2 and 5-lb. cans and barrels, which must be diluted before using; therefore, wo recommend tbe liquid form aa being tbe best for use. ICopy of letter received from the University of California, College of Agriculture, Berk eley, dated Dec. 41 h, MM. J. N. Know'es, Esq., Manager Aictlc Oil Works, San Francisco: Dear Sir—We have la ely tested tho Insecticide preparation of Whale Oil Soap sent by you to us, and have fouud it to be very effectual against tho Scale infesting Orange and Bay Trees; also aga nst the Thrlus. From our previous experience with a similar composition. I think it will be found fully effectual against any small Insect Pests not specially protected like some of the armored Scales, and against which any Wash short of strong lye cannot be used. Respectfully, E. W. IIILGARD, Professor State University. We ask you to eivc this preparation a thorough teat, feellug confident that it will do all we claim for it. It will cost hut a small amount to savo your fruit trees and flower plants from the deadly insect. Give it a trial and be convinced. Yours truly, v ARCTIC OIL WORKS, 28 California Street.
