Note* of Progress ln the Motner Colony, | From The Anaheim Gazotte ] The Boldt tract is now being surveyed into town lots, and they will be on the market iv a week or ten days. IU" traot fronts on the new depot, and ad the lots are very desirable and Miro to double in price within a short time. There is a rumor current iv Los An geles that the Aichison, Topeka •nd Hanta Fe Road intend to build their workshops, round houses, etc., at Ana heim, and this rumor has many be liever*. It is almost certsiu tbat the Cdjppany cannot get land enough n Los Argeles at any reasonable 1 rice com modious enough for their shops, and tbey will be driven to select some prom ising town outride of the city. And the people of Los An* les have a decided belief that Anaheim ia tbe place hxed upon That is one rras<=n of tbe pow erful boom under which we are stag gering, and there is more than a proba bility that tbe rumor will prove true. A large amount of bay has been out, and the clatter of the mower is heard on every side. A better quality ot bay is raised this year than lor several years past. Grapes give promise of a large yield. Walnut trees are heavily loaded, and will yield the largest crop err grown in this valley. Ihe three-year otd soft-shell walnut trees growmug on the land of Theo. Staley are heavily loaded with nuts. Peach and appl? treea are heavily loaded aud give prom ise of a larger crop than for many years. North Anaheim c'aims to bavo the richest Und in Los Angeles county, and if the boom does not take all of tbe and for town lots, her productions will be unsurpassed by the tame amount of land anywhere in the United States. We are indebted to T. C. Smytho, School Census Marshal, for the following report of the number of children in Anaheim School District: Between 5 snd 17 years of age, boys,2M .. t. " girls, —ess Under :, years - ,„ Number of births during year, boys 10 .. •• '• girls 13- ■ Last year there were 376 children be tween 5 and 17 years of age: under 5 years, 155. It was a slightly more pro iifio year, however, there being 26 births. , In 1885 there were 254 ehduren of school age, and 146 under 5. Io Falrview District, Census Marshal Frank Moore reports 35 boys and 36 girls between 5 and 18, and 5 children under 5. There were 5 births in the district. . From the report of the Anaheim School District Assessor we compile the following table of valuations of properly in th« district: Va'.ue of real estate Value of improvements ?5r2S Value of persousl propeity l i?'? 2 Value of mortgages Value of irnprovem nts ou real es tate asses ed to persons other than the owners of the resl estate I.JOO Money ou hand — ____ Deductions for mortgages mjtt Taxable property in district $812,451 Tho following table of valuations in the district for the past seven years will prove interesting: iw •SMB #M,OT B "" iM ' ] '' J B ma oi* »5 . . Xl 18*7 "MM These are suggestive figures. They show that nutil the present year the in crease in value of property in this d.s triet hai b' en ver, slight, and they also show thai Anaheim's present boom is not one of die kinil manufactured on paper. Tbe new to«u of Fullertou, and proba bly slid another new town, will be with ii the boundaries of Anaheim I School District next year, and the valua-1 lion of tbe property will probably be doubled thereby. We commend these facts to settlers and speculators, aud ab jure them to get in line befure tbe pro cession is fairly fctarted. Land here is 1 ridiculously low yet Town lots for $200 nnd $300, snd acreage property from 1150 to $300 per acre is no price at all io such a growing place, and one with auch a mugniliecut future ahead of it. If there is one fact that the experi ence of the past season shows to far mers above another, it is that sunnier fallowing is the best policy. The plow ing may not be sa'isfactory because of the hard crust of the soil, but the out come or results in harvest will show the wisdom of such a course. The grain farms of Petalutna and Vallejo townships, summer fallowed the past year, will prove what we hove as serted. It is generally supposed that deep plowing is necessary to produce a crop. I'ossihly this may be so on light soils. But in Vallej.) township, where tho soil is adobe mixed more or less with sand and deep, merely scratching the surface will produce a crop of grain if sowed in due season; possibly not tirst class, bat still a crop. The writer recol lects crossing that township for two years, before it was generally touched by a plow, and at this season of the year the heads of the wild oats standing above tbe ground almost as thick as the hair on a dog's back, would lap over the pommel of his saddle while riding through the valley and over the hills between Sonoma and I'etalutna. From two to rive tons of the best nil 1 oats hay, without fencing, was common iv l'eialuma valley in those early days. Besides thousauds of Span ish cattle and horses, the country at that day was full of elk, antelope and deer, all of which were dependent upon the natural g p asscs and forage of the country. Bur, notwithstanding all the above aud the thousands of imported horses and cattle, the couuty aa a grczing county kept up its pres tige as a cow county. It is also a fact that if any tract of land within the boundaries named is not cultivated for two or three years it will return to and become a wild oat produc ing region, as in former days. It is also a fact that wild oats will onve out and ou'grow every other grass product ex cept wild mustard. The wild mustard tree ol the Bible, with the birds com fortably settled in its branches, is not overdrawn.—[Petaluma Courier. How's Your Liver?
