2 DAILY jH ERA LD. A "Herald" >ian Visits t|ie Wasnlnajton Warden Farm. Washington Garden was visited yes terday afternoon by a vast tbrong of paople who had been lured there by the tempting advertisements published by j its proprietors, nnd if they came there tor pKuaiiie iiiey WH% uoi disappointed as an excellent programme had barn provided. Menu's military band elis> coursed sweet music to eutertaiu the ear, while for visual pleasure the /.oolog ical collection furnished ample satifac tion. One of the most charming features of this popular resort is the aviary which contains a choice and varied selection of birds, most of which have been obtained from China and the East Indies. Of conrse the ostriches formed the principal attraction and the courtly proprietors were kept busy answering the many questions pro pounded by curious and interested visitors. The plumage on the birds is rapidly approaching that stage when they will be shorn to supply the re quirements of those who consider ostrich feathers "the thing,'' in fact one of the birds was plucked yesterday and another will probably undergo the ordeal to-day. It will be two months more though before the majority of the feathers are iv the stage of required lit ness and then the proprietors expect to reap a handsome revenue for their en terprise. The averaee gross receipts from each bird is $.100 every seven months, about 50 large plumes being ob tained from the wings and about IS ounces of body feathers. One wing feather alone was stated to have been sold for $io. The incubator, manufac tured at Petaluma, is in full blast and in six weeks more a brood of chicks is ex pected. It is kept at an uniform tem perature of 103 , and as each full grown bird is worth about $1000 there is no doubt but that all the vigilance possible is being observed, As a curious fact j about tbe endurance of the ostrich as applied to its powers of abstemiousness, j it was stated by tbe proprietors that one of the birds, at present on view, went without any food whatever during six | weeks of its transit from Africa here. THE TRAMP. Familiar Figure on Los Angeles Streets. HE IS OPPOSED TO WORK If He Labors He Thinks His Life is in Dancer.—One Way of Living. ■ One of the worst pests of modern civ ilization is the geous tramp. He is the psrish of society, a wanderer who goeth aojut seeking what he may devour. Disappearing in the most mysterious manner duriog the heat of the day, he never fails to turn up fresh and hearty at meal time, when he shows to what a tine point he has reduoed his profession by the selection of his "strike." Wood piles are his worst enemies, as in most cases an appeal for food is followed by an introduction to an axe, and an in janotion to exercise himself a little. Los Angeles seems to be the Mecca of these wandering Bedouins and during the day they may be seen in all their splendor sitting on the steps of the court house and indulging in phdosophical criticisms of everything that may at tract their attention. "Please sir, have you got a quarter you can spare a poor fellow who hasn't had nothing to eat to-day,' was the tirst in timation the writer had yesterday afternoon of an assail from the shafts of one of these wan dering gentry. Turning, he saw a fresh, healthy-looking youug man of not more than -U years of age, who was respsctfully pulling his forelock and endeavoring to contort his features into an expression of great distress. His cos tume was "fearfully and wonderfully made." He wore a Prince Albert coat that had apparently passed through the worst stages of a revolution, and the degage appearance of his cravat was evidently in imitation of tbe style usually accredited to Byron. The relic of a straw bat coy - ered a head of frowsy-looking hair and at his other extremity one or two red toes were struggling to free themselves from the trammels of a pair of well-worn base ball shoes. Thinking it a good oppor tunity to get some information that might possioly serve to wile away a few moments for the readers of the Hbbalo, the writer made the man a proposition which was immediately ac oepted. The tramp agreed to furnish some truthful information about the modus operandi of his fellow-craftsmen and his own story is the best manner of telling what followed. "Well, sir, we don't have such a good time as most people seem to think. Many's the day that we go without get ting a bite of anything to eat; of course that's when we're on the road, in a city like this it's no trick to get all the chuck a fellow wants. Talk about hard ships, you people don't know what they are. Why, last summer, when me and Orange Pete was heading for California, —we'd been having a fat time in El Psso but they got onto us and we had to skip out; but 1 11 tell you about that afterwards. Well, we got out of Tucson comfortable enough, on the brakes, but after a time the brakees got onto us and Bred us oil' right iv the middle of the desert. It was blazing hot and we hadn't got a drop of water with us, aud 1 tell you we liked to have died before we got to Maricopa. Pete was for cav ing in once or twice, but I made him stick to it, aud I wouldn't go through that day's experience again if they offered to make me President of the United States after it was over. But I must tell you about the El Paso dodge. You see in that town there's lots of prospectors come in busted and get grub staked by store keepers and such folks in town, and then start out in the mountains again. You know what grub staking is, don't your—a fellow has to give half of what he strikes to the fellow who stakes him, and in returu he gets an outfit of coffee, beans aud Bacon—generally stuff enough to last him about three months. Well, I'd got a pretty good suit of clothes, so I went round town and did the prospector racket. I had my pockets tilled with some pretty good specimens I'd got from an old miner, and the people in town was quite slack on them. I worked a big liquor dealer for a good stake, and be gave me s."> in cash at well as the chuck, and off I started. But I didn't go into the moun tains; that wasn't my racket. I met Pete just outside town and we went up the river about twenty miles, near a place called Chambrjrino that was nice and quiet and there we camped. We bad a bully time then, lying 'round all day and doing nothing except when meal time came round, When the stores ran low, I headed for town again, struck my man, showed him some fresh speci mens and gave bim a glowing account of a lay-out <hat I'd struck, and worked it so well that he gave me a twenty to get some Mexican laborers to help me on the prospect. I bought a lot of booze and struck out for the camp, and me and Pete got ghriously drunk that night drinking his health. Next day, though, when wo we was a sleeping off the effects of our baozs, I felt some one kicking me in theribs.and when I looked up it nigh scarsd me to death to see my grub-stakcr standing over me. I tried to explain matters to bim, but it wouldn't go, aud he trotted us over to Cham borino at the point of his gun, and they locked m np in an old adobe prison. Bat it wasn't the first time we'd been in the 'jug,' and an old shanty like tbat couldn't hold us, for we broke out that night, and skipped up couutry just Ihe best «c knew how. It wouldn't have been healthy to stay round that district any longer, so we headed for California, and we've been here ever since. Say, did yon ever notice at the rail road depots auy names cat in on the freight-house doors and round the plat forms? Well, that the tramp's register. When he comes in town he carves iiis name somewhere round the depot, and the date of hia arrival, and if there's any of his pals round town they know where to liud him. When ho quits town he cuts in 'Bound for Krisoo,' or wherever he's going, and the dato he starts, and that's the way we keep track of each other. Home fellows can travel almost ou pas senger time when they're bound any where, but then they have to be old hands at tbe business. When the news got to Frisco that Grant had died, there was about 200 of us chaps struck right out for New York, 'cos we knew there'd be good times at the funeral, and some of us made the trip in ten days." "Thankee, sir; much obliged. If you want to know anything more you'll lind me'ronnd the court house most any evening as long as I'm in town;" and he shambled off down the street and turned into a saloon with a beery smile lighting np his countenance. | Besides the ostriches there is a mis- I cellaueous collection of coyotes, wild j cats, eagles, snakes, etc., and all seem to be doing well and are ap parently contented with their ' lot with the exception of a lately captured coyote, who is thrown into a state of tha wildest alarm by the nearest approach of anything bearing the slightest resemblance to humanity. A gentleman bearing evident traces of fatigue was noticed to seat himself on what was apparently aa empty box, but the look of composure had scarcely had time to adorn his features, win n he sud denly gave a spring and struck ont in a bee line for "pastures new," and big bead drops of fear started on his brow. The scribe, iv pursuit ot information, at once proceeded to investigate the affair, when he discovered that the gentle-man's ; sudden anxiety for violent exercise was ! owing to the fact tbat the box contained a rattlesnake. It was a matter of im- I possibility for him to have beeu hurt, as I there was an inch of solid timber encas l ing the reptile all round, but the music |of the rattles had evidently no charms , for him, and be sought a temporary I refuge in the casino which is attached to I the grounds. I There is no doubt but that ostrich j farming is proving a successful industry, and to Los Angeles county ia to be ac credited the honor of tirst introducing i this enterprise into our republic. If the I rumors with which the air is laden be j true, there will soon be a branch farm located in the vicinity of P.isadena, and ) Mr. Cawston states that he is already ou I the gui vive for desirable land for that purpose.
