HE DESPISES THE USUKEB. How a Couple of Men and Women Were Given a Cold Eide Yesterday Morning:. Sam Jones spoke last night at the Pavilion to as large an audience as that which greeted him when he commenced services here last Sunday night, every available foot of space in the auditorium being occupied by an eager crowd which had commenced to assemble an hour be fore the services began. In his quaint manner he preached about Social Purity, and during the course of his remarks he launched forth quite a tirade against dancing. "Nineteen out of every twenty of the girls that are married, meet their downfall in the ball-room," he said and then he shouted vehemently. "There is nothing so damnable as the ball-room—it is quite as bad as the barroom, and is like it in one way, for tbe barroom ruins the men and the ball room debauches the women. Purity is the key to heaven, and he that is pure is pious, and he that is impure is impious. Nature gives us in the ermine an exam ple of how we should be. This animal is clean and pure, and when the hunters want to catch it they can always do so by putting mud and dirt on "the trail along which it passes, for when the ermine comes to the dirt it lays down, afraid of the impurity. Why cannot we be like it, and avoid the very appearance of evil?" Speaking later on about covetousness and avarice, he said that the meanest man in the world is the usurer who lends money to a poor devil and then having got him in his clutches squeezes and squeezes until he has got every cent that his victim has got. Yet how many men get rich that way, he said, and then added in conclusion that if he went among the churches of Los Angeles he would bet that three-fourths of their in mates during service time would be mon eyed men. The vast audience listened to the vary ing intonations with marked attention, and it is worthy of note that although he spoke for over an hour not a soul but those who were half suffocated by the severe crowding left the building. A COLD BIDE. Given to Five Unlucky People by tne Police. Es-ofRC-V Cutfiia roportPnl to Chief Cooney last Wednesday that he had discovered a den of thieves down in the river bottom —some half a dozen dan gerous characters living together in a tent. He said ho had been watching them for some time and had positive proof of the fact that they were pro fessionals of the deepest-dyed type. The Chief accepted his statement and or dered that a raid should be made. Yesterday morning at 3 o'clock the wagon was sent down to the spot carry ing several brave men prepared to meet any kind of a frantic and bloody resist ance that might be offered. The tent was found with the assistance of Cates who had been "detectiving" the place for some time, and the occupants were ordered to surrender. They turned out to be two men, their wives and one baby. Outside the tent another des perado was found asleep, wrapped up in a blanket. He had come in late in the evening from San Fernando where he had been in search of work and had staid outside unwilling to wake the women and child by entering the tent. The police ordered the women to put on their clothes and to follow them and the men to the patrol wagon. There was a good deal ot shiver ing and crying, but the authority of the law demanded instant obedience. The "desperate characters" were loaded into the wagon and the tent was thoroughly searched. No stolen goods were found, out everything in the tent bore evidence to the poverty and honesty of its occu pants. All rive were taken to the police station, and their names entered on the police books as "suspected." In the morning Chief Cooney appeared on the scene and examined the great capture. The men were laborers and all perfectly able to give a good account of themselves. They and their wives were allowed to go with an apology, aud the members of the force who had taken a hand in the raid were seen dnring the day wandering around and asking for somebody to kick them. SOON SETTLED. The switchmen on tlto California Southern Satisfied. The trouble on the California South ern is settled. General Manager Dan McCool met the Grievance Committee of the switchmen at San Bernardino yester day afternoon and thoroughly talked the affair over. The difficulty arose regard ing a switchman named McTrenthy, who been discharged last November and who applied to the Brotherhood to be rein stated, stating that he was let out be cause he was a participant in the former strike. Mr. McCool showed the con ferring committee that McTrenthy had been discharged on account of incom petency, and thoroughly assured them that this was the case, whereupon they declared themselves satisfied, and the committee withdrew its appeal. In the evening Mr. McCool received quite an ovation in his private car from the engineers and conductors, who called on him to testify their appreciation of his generous treatment of all connected with the road. Shaw and Wells Selected..)! a The leading Republican politician! held a caucus yesterday afternoon to de cide on the slate for the two new Super ior Judges whom Assemblyman Damson is endeavoring to get for Los Angeles county. After a little deliberation, they selected Mr. G. Wiley Wells and Mr. Lucien Shaw, and then adjourned. Mr. I Shaw is a member of the firm of Shaw & Damson, and the Assemblyman has therefore probably brought his influence to bear in his partner's behalf.
