2 "SANTA MONICA." Professor Hank*. Contributes a Valuable specimen. A very interesting meeting was held by the Microscopical Society at its rooms on Salter street last night, Vice-Fresi dent William Paysant presiding. There was no special order for the evening, and, after the transaction of the routine business, Dr. O'Toole exhibited a preparation from a cancerous tonsil, the specimen having been obtained in an operation a short time before the death of the subject; also a demona of the vault of the pharynx; also a section through the oesophagus, and lastly the ovaries of a young subject. The different subjects were carefully examined by the members, and a vote of thanks was ex tended to Dr. O'Toole for his valuable contributions. The most attractive and instructive feature of tbe meeting was the presenta tion by Professor Hanks of a piece of diatomaceous earth, found recently on the beach at Santa Monica by S. O. Brown. Professor Hanks suggested to him the advisability of searching for specimens with the view of discovering something similar to or a duplicate of the "old Santa Monica," which has be come so famous in the scientific world. NATURE OF A DIATOM. Diatomaceous earth is a pet subject and the hobby of the veteran miero scopist. A diatom is a single-celled plant, bearing a Bingular relation to the animal and even to the mineral king dom, being considered by some as be longing partly to the latter, and regarded as a vegetable crystal, differing only from minerals in having the power of locomotion, and of multiplying through separation. The study of diatomacea 1 is most interesting. Their extreme and varied beauty is a source of constant pi iasure to the microscopist. The beauty of diatoms consists in their color, their general form or sculpture. These delicate markings are seen under tbe microscope to be processes, knobs, bosses, concavities, ribs, groovings and lines, so minute that the highest power obtainable by the most skillful optician is required to see them. There are more than 4,000 distinct species of diatoms which have been classified. Of all diatomaceous earths, the one which is the most famous, and contains so many forms of beauty, is the " Santa Monicaj" which was found by Thomas B. Woodward, of the United States Coast Survey in 1876. It was found by itself, and there was no other sign of a deposit of the earth in the vicinity. The deposit from which it came is not known. Slides of this mate rial grace the cabinets of microscopistp in all parts of the world, and it is prized above gold. Search has been made in different parts of the globe by scientists, bat no rival or equal of the "Santa Mon ic »'' has been found. THE SPECIMEN INSPECTED. The specimen presented by Professor Hanks was submitted to microscopic in spection, and the verdict seemed to be that it was of great scientific value. The scrapings of the earth examined were an washed, and the powers used were not sufficient to determine whether the spec imen was a "Santa Monica" or not. A number of the members discussed a great number of resemblances, but were unwilling to pronounce judgment on so important a subject to the scientific world without giving the specimen a de tailed and scientific study. It was decided to cut the specimens into vertical sections and submit them to a most thorough microscopic inspection. If they in any way approach the "old Santa Monica," parts of the specimen 'Will be sent to leading microscopical societies of the East and Europe.— rS. F. Call. The specimen of earth here referred to really came from Redondo Beach, where a very extensive deposit of it has been found by Mr. S. 0. Brown. Herald readers will hear more of this at an early date. —rEd. Herald. NATURAL GAS. Tke Exact Situation Begardlng the Reported Deal. Regarding the dispatch telegraphed to the Herald to the effect that a syndicate is about to commence operations with a view to obtaining natnral gas near LO3 Angeles, it would appear that the whole thing is the outcome of negotiations that have been going on here for three months past. About last November an Eastern man appeared in the city and Bet to work endeavoring to get favorable propositions regarding the obtaining of 20,000 acres of land in Ventura and Los Angeles counties for the purpose of drilling for oil. This must not be confounded with the other propo sition to bond the Puente property from Mr. Lacey and his associates for $700,000, which was an entirely different project, and which, it is announced, has fallen through. The overtures which the arrival made were in connection with wells in the district handled by the Hutton syndicate, and in connection with what transpired Mr. Sutherland Hutton says that the matter is still in ttatu quo. A proposition has been made and is under consideration, but as to the amount the Herald's informant declined to speak. The idea of the Pittsburg people boring for natural gas is not entertained by the oil men who say that although the gas is certainly to be found about Los Angeles, there is not enough pressure to make it worth the handling. The Fairview gas is probably the bast that has yet been obtained, but after all it is only marsh gas, and the prop osition that was once mooted of piping it to Los Angeles has long since been abandoned. Near Florence a strike was made some five or six years ago by a rancher named Thomas, who has ever since supplied his household require ments with the gas obtained, but it is only good enough for such a purpose, and could not be developed to be of much advantage to the community. In this city, on the site of the New United States Hotel another instance can be given of the presence of the gas for workmen employed by Mr. Mesmer struck it when drilling for a well some time ago, but it was not in sufficient quantity to be of much use. When Pro fessor Dephy, .the mining expert, was interviewed by a Herald man some time ago he spoke very enthusiastically on the sub j set. He said that there were large bodies of material that could be tapped about Los Angeles and hinted he was then making negotiations with the Board of Trade of this city with a view to making experi mental borings. Messrs. Lacey, Hutton and other oilmen who were seen by a Herald man yesterday, all profess to be in ignorance of the location of the natural gas well, which, it is claimed, the Pittsburg syndicate's representative here is talking about, and say that until tbe arrival of Mr. Ashburner here next week nothing pertaining to the matter can be made known. CATARRH, Throat Diseases, Bronchitis, ASTHMA, CONSUMPTION Together with diseases of the EYE, EAR AND HEAKT, Successfully treated by M. Hilton Williams, M. D.. M. C. P. S. 0.. HOI.IiICNKF.CK BLOCK, Cor. Smlngand Second Sts., Los Angeles, Cal. Consumption Can Be Cured. This has been demonstrated in thousands of cases trentcd by 1» K. Wl LLIAIK, With hi* new system of medicated inhalat'ons, also the oxygen and compound oxygen treat ment, combined with proper constitutional remedies for the liver, stomach, blood, eta. Probably no systam of practice ever adopted has teen so universally successful as that in troduced by Dr. Williams for the cure of Catarrh, Throat Diseases, Bronchitis, Asthma and Consumption. CATARRH. Catarrh is often regßrded by the patient as a cold in the head, and he often expr s«csbls astonishment nt hi* remarkable tendency to contract a fresh cold. Indeed, he dec lares he is scarcely free from one cold before he takes another: and he is always exceedingly careful It is also a matter of surprise to blm that the cold always seems to settle in the head and throat. At times many of the symptoms of Catarrh may seem to abate, and the patient is l a d to hojc that the dlseas? is about to wear otT: but another class of symptoms soon appear, and ho learns to his horror that Instead of recovery from the dise«se it is somewhat changed iv its character aud hss extended to the throat. A sense of weariness is tometimes feltin read ing, speaking or singing, hoarseness at times occurs, a • cnsatlon of dryness is sometimes ?eli in the throat, or it appears that some foreign substance, as. for instance, * hair, obstructed the throat: there becomes a sense of languor and fatigue, the breath lessens upon a littlo exertion, a short, backing cough, a peculiar sound in clearing the throat, a feeling as though there was not room enough iv the chest to breathe; these and other symptoms occur after the disease has made considerable progress Then it is a time when consumption is about to begin its dreadful work. Up to ihis point the progress of the disease may have been slow, and the patient may in expressing bis confident hope that it will ' wear off," declare that he has had the catarrh for years and has not seemed to become much worse, and trusts he will "by and-by" recover. But this delusion is the grand error which has peDpled our Cfmoteries with consumptive forms, as all forms of catarrh end Anally in consumption Inhalations are applicable in all diseases of the respiratory organs, but must he prepared for each iudivldual case as they severally re quire. By the employment of proper inhalation In the form of msdicated vapor (not steam or spray) we are able to produce immediate and direct aclion upon the diseased surface in the pharynx and nasal passageG. for air will fmd its way Into the most remote and intricate cavities, where it Is Impossible to make fluid applica tions. By these m ans every case can be cured Persons desiring treatment by this system of practice can use the remedies at home as well as at our oflice, and which will cause uo incon venience or hindrance to business whatever. I have seen so many of thc.e enses cured that I do not consider any case hopelsss unless both lungs are seriously involved Even then the inhalations aid us iv dissolving the m ucus and in contracting aud healing the cav ities, which nothing else caa do with the same success The very best references from those already cured.
