6 THE SEWER COMMITTEE. A I.in ot 4iood Names Selected Vet- terdar. One week ago yesterday Dr. H. Bin- ( sabough laid before the Council a peti tion signed by many prominent citizens, asking that a committee be selected to aid the Council in preparing plans for , sewering the city and disposing of the sewage. The Council appointed the pe titioners to select such a committee of citizens, and these persons metyeaterday afternoon. C. M. Wells was made Chairman of the meeting and C. W. Pendleton Secretary. Business was at once proceeded with, resulting in the se lection of tbe following list of names, one person being taken from each ward, in order: J. E. Jackson, A. H. Judson, C. M. Wells, J. P. Culver, Oeorge Hanson, 8. M. White, B. Cohn, J. E. Plater, W. H. Workman. To these nine were added six others, taken from the mass of the citizens without reference to ward bound* aries, as follows: H. Sinsabaugh, J. P. Widney, L. M. Breed, E. W. Jones, J. R. Toberman and E. M. Hamilton. COD JIT MATTERS. The Law Breakers Before the Blind Uoddess. The two cases against F. M. Garrett, charging him with incest, came up be fore Judge Cheney yesterday. They both went over to this morning. Christ Stephenson was duly arraigned. He will plead tomorrow. Ah Yueh's case was ordered placed on the trial calendar. W. F. Wheeler is to plead tomorrow. T. J. Hedges' case was up, and on mo tion of the District Attorney it was dis missed, on the ground that there is no evidence to convict. A. A. Montana, the ex-Auditor, was before the Court, and his cases were con tinued until Thursday. James Yelsir, for battery committed on the woman who was his wife, was be fore the Court. Mr. Velsir testified and made a plea to the judge for leniency. A fine of $25 was imposed, which was paid. Rayne F. Clark was tried for prac ticing medicine without filing his certifi cate. After a few moments deliberation the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The case against William Spikes was dismissed on motion of the District At torney, on the gronnd that there was no evidence te convict. The Law Stndents. The lecture this evening by John Haynes, Esq., of Haynes & Mitchell, on "Domestic Relations," will complete the programme of the Law Students' Asso ciation for the first quarter. During the last three months lectures have been de livered by Judge Van Dyke, ex-Judge A. W. Hutton, Colonel G. H. Smith and Messrs. J. D. Bicknell and Thomas Mitchell. The Committee on Pro gramme for the coming quarter have secured many of the most prominent members of the Los Angeles bar, among others Hon. Stephen M. White, ex- Judge Anson Branson, Colonel G. H. Smith, Hon. G. Wiley Wells and Judges Clark, McKinley and Van Dyke, of the Superior Court. Judge Ross and several prominent attorneys, while unable to assist the association at present, ex pressed to the committee their interest in the work of the association and their willingness to aid it in the future. With the enthusiastic support of such men among the attorneys of the city and the earnest efforts of its members, there will be practically no limit to the good which the association will accomplish in the near future. There are schemes on foot now which will give a much broader scope to the work of the association and which will be given to the public at a later date. The lectures are free to all. AH meet ings are held in Judge Van Dyke's court room, corner of New High and Franklin streets, at 8 o'clock. Besides the lecture already announced for this evening there will be an election of officers. c Heavily Fluid. In the Township Court, yesterday morning, the cases against George Ab bott and Denis McMahon, both of whom were charged with having assaulted a plasterer named Joseph Wortner, on the night of the 18th met., with intent to rob him, were called for trial by Justice Theodore Savage. Deputy District At torney Diehl, who appeared for the pros ecution, moved the Court to dismiss the complaint already filed, on the ground that it was found by him on examining into the charges that no higher offense than that of battery could be proven against the defendants. He further begged the Court to allow him to file a new complaint charging the defendants with battery, and asked that they be re arrested upon the new warrant immedi ately upon the dismissal of the "assault to rob" cases. The Court granted both motions and discharged the two youths; whereupon they were rearrested and arraigned upon the charge of battery. McMahon entered a plea of not guilty and was ordered to appear for trial at 9:30 a. m. on Thursday next, bail being required in the meantime in the sum o' £500. Abbott on the other hand plrviued guilty and threw himself upon the 'nercy of the court, who heard the testimony of the complainant. At the conclusion of Wortner's statement Justice Savage fined the defendant in the sum of $200, in ad dition to which he sentenced h>m to im prisonment in the County Jail for six months. It is believed by the authori ties that these defendants are members of a gang which has infested Chinatown for some time past to the terror of its in habitants. An Ron vs. Ah Hon. Some time ago, down in Anaheim, a little difficulty occurred between two Chinamen, out of which grew a criminal indictment. Ah Bon was the complain ing witness, and he charged his fellow countryman with making an assault with a deadly weapon. The charge was made against Ah Hon. The case was tried by a jury before Judge McKinley yesterday. When the case came up Ah Bon did not appear, and that is how Ah Hon prob ably came to be acquitted by the jury. The theory of tbe defense was self-defense, and the jury took that view of the mat tor. The knife with which Ah Hon made the assault on Ah Bon, or warded off Ah Bon's crowbar, as the case may have been, was exhibited in court. It is about fifteen inches long in the blade and about three inches wide. Properly used it would just about cut the head off a hog at one blow. In epite of this ex hibit the jury acquitted Ah Hon. But now Ah Bon will be called on to explain why he did not appear yesterday to prosecute the case. When he became "conspicuous" by the hole his absence made in the court room, a bench warrant for his arrest was issued, and Ah Bon thereby duly landed in the County Jail. The Judge will trouble him this morning to show cause why he should not be fined for contempt of court. ' THE LOS ANGELES DAILY HERALD: TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 24, 186b.
