6 TIME TO GO HOME. lion Mum Always Start When Yon Benin to See things Doahle. Here ia a good story from tbe Detroit Free Press: A little after 11 o'clock last night a yonng man evidently not many minutes "from the alcoholic atmosphere of a bar-room, was walking vp Monroe avenne, when in front of the Plankinton . his gaze happened to fall on the burly forms of two corpulent individuals who play the two Johns in the comedy of , that name now running a week at one of the local theaters. The - young man halted, rubbed his eyes, straightened out his spinal column and went through all the different movements included in the process known as "brac ing up," looked earnestly at the < two portly forms, each wrap- j ped in a close-fitting overcoat, each < topped off with a shiny silk hat, then he ' shook his head mournfully and resumed J his walk. Just before he reached Ran dolph street he met an acquaintance who, hailing him, said: "Hello, there, Charley, what's your hurry ? Not going ' home, are you ?" "You betcher sweet life I am," was the emphatic response. "I shink I know when Ish got 'nough. Seem' donble now. Big fat man down Btreet; took a look at him; hang me if I didn't see two of him. Here's a word of advice, ole fel. When you shee double go borne, don't tarry, git," and away he went, firmly impressed that he had been the victim of an optical illusion, induced by the libations that he had offered up at the shrine of Bacchus. Where They Urow Rea-.is. Ed T. Farnum, who use to be an honest miner on the top oi the Sierras, at a point 11,700 feet above the eea, has gone to raising Lima beans, in Ventura county, California. Mr. Farnum is on bis way to his bean ranch from a vieit to his old home in tbe East, and was teen the other day at the Palmer. "People who don't know anything of my section of Cal ; forria don't know anything about Lima beans," said Mr. Farnum. "Why, we raise beans by wholesale. The great Carpin'.eria valley, in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, is one vast bean ery. There are thousands of acres of tba loveliest land on earth lying directly on the Pacific Coast, devoted . exclusively to Lima beans. We begin to plow in January, and about February 1 pnt in the crop. We grow the stunted bean, which grows like a shrub and needs no poles. We plant the beans in rows and carefully cultivate till the har vest. In a good year tbe beans will yield from one to one and a half tons to the acre, and last year the crop of the Carpinteria valley was something like 40,000 tons of beans. A great many of the beans are sold to the canneries at Los Angeles, but the bulk of -the crop is dried and sent to market in San Fran cisco. Profitable? Oh, yes; give us a good year and there is no better crop than Lima beans. "One section, too, is the greatest English walnut producing section in tbe United States. Rusaell Heath, of Santa Barbara, has an immense number of walnut trees, and his crop will average 100,000 pounds of walnuts every year, and the crop nets him between $9,000 and $10,090 a year. The only cost of a walnut crop is the gathering and sending to market. There is a never-failing de mand for the nuts, and as the area in which the English walnut thrives is limited there is no fear of overproduction. The trees begin to bear at three and four years, and attain their full vigor and growth at about ten years. The English walnut is one of the most beautiful trees to be found in a landscape. The foliage is a rich green, it is very dense and the form of the tree is perfect. A well-kept grove of walnuts is in tbe summer a beautiful sight."—[Chicago Herald. • commission and storage. H.
