Abont Town.
Some few weeks ago a communication
was received by Chief Glass from Chief
of Police McCheseny, of Trenton, N. J.,
inquiring about the parentage of W. I.
Roberts, who had been arrested there for
burglary, he having stated that be did
not wish his family, who were wealthy
residents of this city, to know of his es
capade. Nothing could be ascertained of
such a person by the Police Department
here, but on further correspondence it
was accidentally disclosed that when ar
rested Roberts wore a shirt marked
"Pomeroy." This was a clue not to be
slighted by Detective Wallin, to wham
the case was apportioned, and
it was soon ascertained that Roberts
was the individual who so successfully
burglarised a number of houses in the
southwest portion of the city, and prop
erty stolen from the residences of
Messrs. Mallard, Calkins, Hance, Mc-
Grath and Mrs. Lawton has been un
earthed in Trenton, and will be returned
to this city as soon as possible.
Roberts was convicted and sent to the
New Jersey penitentiary for two years
for his last burglary ln that city.
RAILWAY MATTERS.
Ati Important Meeting- at San Fran
cisco Tbla Week.
Within the next few days a meeting
will take place in San Francisco of
prominent officials of the Union Pacific
and Southern Pacific roads, at which it
is said strong influence will be brought
to bear against the extension of the
Utah Central to Los Ancelea. The rep
resentatives of tho Union Pacific who
will be present are W. H. Holcomb, the
Vice-President of the road, and 0. S.
Mellen, the General Traffic Manager.
They have baen invited by the officials
of the Southern Pacific to meet and dis
cuss the possibility of coming to some
kind of an agreement which will relieve
the Union Pacific from the necessity of
putting through their line to this Coast.
The present terminus of the Union
Pacific is Ogden. From that point on to
tbe Coast all its through freight and pas
sengers must be shipped over the Central
and Southern Pacific lines, which
are practically one road. The
Southern Pacific is the worst rival which
the Union Pacific has, and it is for this
reason that the latter is anxious to
secure a throngh connection which will
make them independent of it. At the
same time, it ia to some extent within
the power of the Southern Pacific to
head off the Union from building through
by offering to make such traffic arrange-'
menta as will practically give its rival
tbe desired outlet.
It can hardly be questioned that the
Southern Pacific will make some very
advantageius proposition to keep such a
formidable rival out of the field. Tbe
Santa Fe is a rival only as far as the
southern part of the Btate is concerned,
and it does not tap the rich mining dis
tricts where the Union Pacific at present
has fuil sway. The Southern Pacific
has all aloDg viewed with decided alarm
the evident determination of the Union
to cut into its territory, and sooner than
take any chances it will doubtless be per
fectly willing to give up some of the
revenue which it at present enjoys trom
the traffic received from the Union at
Ogden. If it should offer to carry the
Union Pacific's business through to this
Coast at a much reduced figure, it might
perhaps be believed that the latter road
will listen with some favor to such a
proposition.
Such an arrangement to be of any
value to the Union Pacific would have to
be designed to run through a number of
years, and must include the southern
part of the State. It becomes a grave
question whether the Southern Pacific
would be willing to give np such a con
siderable slice of its profits as would be in
volved, for a long terms of years, and
whether it would be willing to make the
extensive concessions which its rival is
in a position to demand. The vigor dis
played by the Union Pacific in pushing
through the extension as rapidly as
possible, shows that it is very much in
earnest in its determination to get
through to tbe Coast, and it will not
tru.-t itself in the hands of its rival unless
the arrangements made will be greatly
to its advantage.
A recent interview with President
Adams, published in the Hkhald of a
few days ago, called attention to the fact
that the Utah Central was at the present
time one of the most profitable branches
of the entire UDion Pacific system, and
that the outlet to this, Coast was desired
more for the mining interests of this line
than for the through traffic. No arrange
ment with the Southern Pacific would
give such an outlet, as it would involve
the use of a long route by way of Ogden
to San Francisco, whereas the proposed
extension would give a direct line to this
city and the coar-t.
it may, therefore, be considered quite
improbable that the proposed conference
will have the effect of heading off the
effort of tbe Union Pacific to
come through to this city. The
Southern Pacific can hardly offer
inducements in _ the way of traffic
arrangements which will have any such
result. The undertaking is, however,
viewed with no small degree of interest
by capitalists of this city who are in
formed of what is going on, and it is not
impossible that some representative may
be sent north to ascertain what can be
done that will prove to advantage to this
section under tbe circumstances.
The trains on the lines running into
this city are now running all right, ex
cept that many of them are subject to
delays owing to the bad condition of the
track. The Santa Ana division will be
opened today—at least so the officials
say; but as this promise has been made
several times, it is not impossible that it
may again fail oi being carried out. The
injuries on the line were very eerious.

AMUSEMENTS.
' The Lost Angeles Theater Enjoy Ing
a Vie Hun.
The Union Square Theater Company,
of New York, now playing A Possible
Case at the Lob Angeles theater, is meet
ing with deserved success. The audience
last night was large, intelligent and ap
preciative. It ia a good comedy, clean
cut, sprightly, with brilliant repartee
and dialogue. It is well played, the
support being all excellent; it is well set
and well dressed. It runs all tbe week.
The Juch Opera Company.
Manager Wyatt and Mr. Davis, ad
vance agent for the Juch Opera Com
pany, exchanged a number of telegrams
,bet«te«> here and San Francisco yester
day, in an attempt to make a new
date for the company in this
city. The effort is to secure
thia splendid attraction for the week
beginning January 27th. There is good
ground to hope the effort will succeed.
"Tbe Spider and tbe Fly."
Next week The Spider and the Fly will
delight the habitues of the Grand. It is
thus described by an eastern exchange:
Bright dialogue, clever people, showy
scenery, mirthful music and fetching cos
tumes are the more important features
which will insure the success of Fraser &
Gill's spectacular pantomimique bur
lesque, Hie Spider and the Fly. Some of
the scenes are essentially new and novel.
Prominent among them is a gymnasium
interior, with its outfit of poles, bars,
ropes, swings, trapeze fixings and other
paraphernalia. A dozen handsome girls
are at their varions athletic, gymnastic
and calisthenic exercises. The picture
presented on the stage in this scene is an
entirely new and beautiful one. Other
scenes in The Spider and the Fly are a
cash girl's entry and choius, and a rail
road chorus, ia which the girls are attired
to represent the conductors of the best
known local and transcontinental lines.
The following list cf names of the com
pany will convey to those who know
mnch of the stage the assurance that
there are clever people in the play: Bes
aie Cleveland, Hilda Thomas, Ada Dare,
Lulu Beddan, Dorsfe and Oreste, Louise
Allen, James A. Adams, Dare Brothers,
Kobert Fraser, Bay Allen, Felix Harris.
Snail Pattl Come Here?
Marcus Mayer is heie, having arrived
yesterday. He comes direct frem Mexico,
where he has been making arrangements
for the eppearance of Patti. He left a
little pot of $147,000 in the bank from
advance sales for the season.
On his arrival here he wbb
greeted by a telegram from
Chicago containing the pleasing news
that the last week of the season in that
city showed gross receipts amounting to
$64,000. while the four weeks had a
record of $236,000. Patti is surronnded
by a large number of the most artistic
people in the lyric world. The question
is, shall she come to Los Angelea? She
appeared here once, and Los Angeles has
the noble distinction of being the only
town of its population, or of twice its
population, in which the diva
has ever sung. Shall this
be repeated? Mr. Mayer will
open box sheets abont January 14th,
to see if Los Angeles, liberality and taste
will stand the fine test. The idea is to
give two nights and one matinee at the
Academy of Music about February 14:h.
Patti's tour this time is in grand opera.
She has 170 people with her. Mr. Mayer
cays if $16,000 can be assured here the
attraction will be ours. Gilmore at $1 to
$1.50 rates took in about $9,000 for two
nights and a matinee. Patti can double
that easily. She will come.
Is He DrszT?
Yesterday Lorenza Robles was in
court before the Commission in Lunacy
to be examined for commitment. He
was accompanied by his brother and
nephew. In the court a of the inquiry
the fact wan developed that all the parties
excepting the nephew are residents of
Santa Barbara county. The man's rela
tives seemed unduly anxious to have him
committed. Both he and his brother are
old men, and they are poer. Lorenzo
did not develop any violent or serious
phase of insanity, and the commission
wisely decided tbat as he is not dangerous
to any one there was no pressing neces
sity of restraining bim, arid that inas
much as his home is in Santa Barbara
county, there was the best place to have
his sanity passed on. The fact that it
would cause thia county an expense of
about $80 was % further reason for not
passing on the case. He was advised to
return to his home with his brother.
Coal-Oil Explosion.
At 10 o'clock yesterday morning a can
of coal oil in a pile of merchandise in
front of Newmark & Co.'s wholesale
grocery warehouse, on North Los Ange
les street, exploded, and in a few mo
ments the burning fluid ignited the more
combustible of the goods. The large
iron doors of the store were promptly
closed by the employees, thus effectu
ally preventing the flames from reaching
the interior of the building. .An alarm
was turned in from box 36, to which the
department turned out; and in the mean
time tbe employees and bystanders used
•every effort to save some of the goods
from the burning pile. But one stream
of water was tbrown npon the blase,
which was speedily extingnished, but
not before a loss of at least $100 had
been incurred.
