About 10:45 o'clock last night H. J.
Benderich, a carpenter, returned home
from a lodge meeting to his borne on
Temple street, behind Cary's milk ranch,
and while striking a match in the kitchen
with which to light a lamp, he dropped
the lighted end accidentally into a can of
coal oil. An explosion at once occurred,
and the burning fluid was scattered upon
Benderich's clothing, consuming his

his face and head. The burning oil
ignited the woodwork of the house, and
in a few minutes the whole building was
enveloped in flames. His wife and
family were roused, and barely escaped
with their lives, but the house and its
whole contents were entirely consumed.
The loss, which is not covered by insur

Yesterday a Commission in Lunacy
sat to investigate the case of Simon
Etchepare. He is a Basque who has
spent most of his time herding sheep for
years. He was taken with a fit of in
sanity some time ago and ran wild,
winding up by jumping into a thirty
foot well, from which he was fished with
some difficulty. He was ordered com
mitted to the asylum.
Ewald'Hollengrin was also before a
similar commission. He is a German;
his father was a preacher, and he was
brought up most religiously. A few
days since he was found on Bhaw street
cutting up some queer capers,
and he was taken into custody
as insane. He reads the Bible
by the hour, at intervals breaking
out in a sacred song. The commission
decided that his condition did not at all
warrant sending to the asylum, and he
was turned loose.
Annie Whaling is an unfortunate
woman who seems to be suffering from
some sort of hallucination. She will
come before a commission in lunacy this
morning.
Catholic mission.
A Catholic mission is something un
usual in the city. The Lazarist* fathers
wiilopenjone at the Sacred Heart church,
East Los Angeles, Sunday next. The
fathers arrived from the East yesterday,
and are considered some of the most
eloquent missionaries in the country.
Those who have heard Father Shaw in
the East will doubtless be only too glad
to have the pleasure of hearing him
again. The mission will open at 10
o'clock.
Cable Conductors Meet.
A meeting of the conductors of the
Pacific railway cable system took place
Thursday evening at 17 North Main
street. It was for the purpose of organ
izing a benevolent society for the pur
pose of assisting one another when in
trouble. There was a rumor that an ef
fort would be made to get up a strike,
although for what reason can hardly be
divined, as their pay was recently raised.
Therewas no truth in the rumor, how
ever.
Pullman Passengers.
The following passengers departed for
the North on the 1:40 train yesterday:
A. W. Brown, J. p. Jackson, F. Sabichi,
O. J. Couts, Mr. Costerman, Mr. Sey
mour, R. Rising, J. M. Damron, Mrs.
Hall, F. G. Morgeter, Mr. Farren.
An Extended Popularity. Brown's

tbe most popular article in use for relieving
Coogha and Throat troubles.

afternoon, and had ono arm ciushed and
received serious internal iuiiuii>s. He
was at work with the construction train,
bour car-loads of Chinamen were

calls for Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla but had
sold his own every time. It did not occur to
him that it might be a serious matter to give
his old time mercury and potash preparation to
people who do not need syphilitic treatment.
It Is safe to say that not one person In ten have
a syphilitic trouble. Hence what do they want
with Such dangerous minerals as mercury aud
potash? What nine-tenths of our people are
troubled with is indigestion, dyspepsia, sick
headaches, constipation and face eruptions, all
of which are the legitimate results of improper
liver and kidney action, or impaired digestive
organs. Those disorders do not call for syphilitic
treatment, but for mild vegetable liver, stomach
and bowel alteratives. Wo are surprised that
intelligent peoplo should be persuaded into tak
ing a mercury aud potash sarsaparilla. When
you ask for Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla, sc; tliat

be a bright existence, is often shadowed by
some allmont that overhangs it like a pall, ob

very common one, is nervousness, or in other
