Rancher Weibking Pays $300 for Tliree Pebbles. Tliree Smart Bunco Men Work an Old Dodge to Perfection. The Louisiana Lottery Swindle Fools a Gullible Man in the Old Fash ion-The Swindlers Escape with the Money. For more than a year past three thieves have been plying a confidence game in thia state and in the nortbweet, known as the Louisiana lottery drawing. It has been played in all the principal towns throughout the coast, and so thoroughly exposed that it is almost in credible that a man with ordinary busi ness capacity should be swindled by it. Two men call upon a farmer for the purpose of purchasing his land. While seeing how the land lays, a third man is met—a confederate of the two. He incidentally mentions that he is a lot tery agent, and finally an impromptu drawing ie had. One of the confederates wine a small amount of money; then the farmer wins aemall amount—for the purpose of encouraging him. Anothei ticket is drawn, and the farmer wins $1000—according to the ticket. The farmer ia told that the $1000 will not be paid to him unless he shows that he possesses an equal amount. This is ridiculous, as under no circumstance! could the farmer lose more than the price of his lottery ticket—if it were really a lottery. The bunco man puts $1000, which the farmer has won, in the tin box, called hie lottery bank. If the victim has not $1000, one of theconfeder atef accompanies him to a bank, where he gets the money. The granger puts it in the box. The box is given him to hold securely, and at a stated time they are to meet the dealer, show that he has an amount equal to that wort, when it will be paid to him. The "capper" also has won $500 or $1000, and is told by the dealer that he must also put up au equal amount. He also puts his money into the box. They have duplicate boxes, and the capper hands to the rancher a box con taining brown paper, and sometimes a single slip of paper on which is written what the victim has just learned, "you are a fool." The "capper" has the box containing all of the money. When the hour arrives for the meet ing, the vordant man ie the only one present. Ou last Tuesday three confidence thieves arrived in the city. They had been at Barstow for about a week, play ing numerous swindling games upon wise men from the east, and had thus stolen about $4000. On Welneeday last a man who gave the name of Martin drove out to the ranch of William Weibking in Univer sity township. He gave to the rancher the ÜBUal song and dance about liking the climate, and finally stated that he wanted to buy a ranch for his sister, who was coming out for the benefit of her health. On last Saturday tbe two confidence men drove out, and the fellow calling- himeelf Martin introduced hie ctvnpan ion ac Dr. Wileon. Hiß sifter, however, eeemed to be in 1 good health, as he did not offer to buy a randi. In a few minutee they n>et a man driving along slowly, admiring the beautiful scenerj', and evidently in search of hie health also. A conversation followed, and the man stated that he was agent for the Louis iana lottery; that be was introducing the game in this section, but preferred showing the scheme only to leading men, co that if any prizes wete won they would be in the hands of men of stand ing. The flattering remarks took immedi ate effect. The eale of the ranch and the sißter's health were forgotten in the discussion of the lottery scheme. The capper, Martin, purchased a ticket which drew $5. Weibking also drew $5, which was paid him. The dealer flashed up $1000 in his tin lottery box for the next drawing. The capper and Weibking took another chance, and the denier declared that each had won $500—and burst the bank. The rancher's pulse was now at a very high tempoiature, but he was told that he must put up $500 before he could draw down the $500 he had won. The capper covered the $500 he had won with what he called government bonds. The rancher did not have the money "mit him," but would come into town and get it. The money and bonds were put in the box, and the capper, Martin and Wiebking drove into town —the cap per carrying the tin box. Fearing that the rancher would not be able to raise the $500 very teadily, the capper told him he would lend him $200, and ac cordfngly placed $200 in the box. Weibking rushed into the First Na- I tional bank and borrowed $300, which ■' was placed in tbe box with the other money and bonds.
