BUT IT SERVED TO TEACH A MASHSK A LESSON, An Incident Uhlrh Occurred Teaterday Morning at Sixth-street Park Which Points a Moral. Sixth street park appears to be the most popular spot for "mashers" of any in tbe city. Another episode took place there early tbe other morning, which for real nerve ranks above all former similar occurrences. A lady who had been attending a sick person in the vicinity was returning to her home at 3 o'clock in tbe morning. When she arrived at the corner of Sixth street and Orand avenue, a "swell" with the appearance of a Bowery dude approached ber and and eaid he "would like her company." As luck wonld have it, tbe lady was carrying a heavy parasol. Thia eye eliminator was brought into immediate requisition, and she smashed it over the fresh young masher's bead. Twice she struck bim with all her might, twisting him aronnd like onto a cork in a whirl pool. He gathered bis pedali.tic ap pendages together and betook himself at a ligbtning speed adown the street. A business man going to his home and happening to see the incident, called upon tbe young scoundrel to halt. This only heightened bis gait and be soon "slid his frame" out of sight in tbe cold gray morning fog. Tbe lady was seen safely to her home. SAN PEDRO OFFICIALS. The Result of the Supervisorial In vestigation. The board of supervisors bsard testi mony yesterday in the San Pedro case, wherein Justice Moore, Constable Peter Winther and City Marshal Hult were thought to have been playing a eliok game in mulcting the county for official services. Juatice Moore, wbo is considerable of a character in bia way, was put through a pretty vigorous examination by Chair man Cook, and aa he said, "told tbe truth and shamed the devil." The rumors that the board bad beard were tbat Constable Wjntber wonld work along until he did hit $83 worth or monthly quota of business; tbat then be would go away and tbe justice would turn all the business for the rest of toe month over to Oity Marshal Hult, whose demands were approved by the district attorney, and thus quite a pretty penny would be turned. Justice Moora said It did look queer tbat the constable should have been away during the latter part of the months of May, June and July, the time when tbe city marshal toyed with official processes for him, and ho could not explain it. He denied that there was any understanding between bim and any one about tbe business, bat said that certainly it did look bad. He had given papers to Mr. Halt to serve when the constable waa away, bat did not know he was doing anything wrong. Constable Wintber threw some light on the mystery by explaining that dar ing tbe latter part of May and June he and Justice Moore were undergoing a period of coolness and he did not know any other explanation for the service of papers by Marshal Hult. Wintber came up to see the dietriet attorney about the matter at the time, but saw Judge Ut ley, he eaid, and was told tbat in hia absence tbe city marshal could be called on. He bad no understanding with Halt, because he objected to hit) serving the papeis and, altogether, Constable Wintber thought be waa a very much abused man. District Attorney Dillon asked quite a number of queationa of tha witnesses and it was evident that no understand ing bad been made with his office. Justice Moore waa inclined to be quite facetious at times, but was very much stirred up beneath bia jocular demeanor over tbe inveatigation. Tbe board gave him clearly to under stand tbat the "periods of coolness" between him and his constable mnat cease, and tbat no demands for services performed by the city marshal would hereafter be recognized. The inveatigation ia expected to have a aalutary effect on tbe methods of justices and constables throughout tbe county. VIA THE SANTA FE. The Chamber of Commerce Excursion to the World's Fair- Last night the executive committee appointed to arrange for tbe chamber of commerce excursion met and decided that the excursionists should go to Chicago in a special Pullman train over the Santa Fe, returning by any route tbat tbey wished. The train will leave Los Angeles, Beptember 4th, at 12 o'clocJj. Very beautiful satin badges, with an orange worked in silk, and having a gold clasp, will be worn by every member of the party, and may be secured of Mr. Bath, at 121 South Broadway. Members intending to go are request ed to leave their names immediately with C. E. Day, 121 South Spring street. Invitations to stop over and be the re cipients of public receptions beve been received from Albuquerque, Denver, Wichita, Kansas City and St. Louis. Immense. That's What They Am. Say.—lt is custom ary in these latter days to express our perfec eatlsfaction with a thing by saying "It's Im mense!" It's so expressive that nothing ctn be added. Geo. L. Fink, Philadelphia, Pa., says: "My wife has bten taking your New Cure for the heart, and says It Is immense. She has not been troufaleed with pain or smother ing spells sine: using it." Jio. L. Roberts, Slatliigton, Pa., says he is 75 years old and has suffered from heart disease for over 40 years.
