DECEPTIVE- WORK.
Otitr,ill S-\vt*r tins raclor* I bir.;-i,l
With Fraud.
A very sensational state nf slljirs was
ditcoveretl yesterday in connection with
tho work being done upon curtain sec
tions of the outfall sewer.
r'onr bricklayers, who claimed they
were on "tbe inside" and whose names
are S. Thomas, M. U'C'onner, W. H.
Taylor and T. Oonway, informed l.'ie
newer committee that the work of sec
tion 4'a tunnel was not being done ac
cording to specifications. They claimed
that tbev had, under orders, done the
work, or some of it, themselves, and
could back up their assertions.
The tewer committee and the city
engineer at once proceeded to tne sec
tion, which is being constructed by
Mackey & Young, to luvesligae the
utory.
It was found only too true. The filling
had been loosely placed in, contrary to
specifications. In certain places where
two courses of brick were called for, only
one was ÜBed.
The contractors were cited to appear
before the sewer committee today to ex
plain tbe matter.
It is understood that Messrs. Mackey
and Young will make a statement show
ing that they were perfectly innocent!
personally of any intent of fraud. Tbey
gay tbey were imposed upon by others
and will be able to clear themselves of
all blame.
ANDERSON'S SUICIDE.
No New Facts OlHcnrsmii at tha luquest
Yesterday.
Coioner Cates yesterday held an in
quest on the body of Alof Anderson, who
committed suicide at San Pedro the
evening before.
Beyond the facts published exclusively
in the Herald, nothing of importance
wns discovered in connection w.tti tiie
case. The jary returned a verdict of
suicidal death, despondency being the
cause.
