TLe Alham bra boys put up a good game, but the Throops were too much for them. Only one touchdown was made by tbe Al bambraa, and no goals kicked. The next attraction at tbe opera house will be the famous Barlow Broth ers' minstrels. The company comes well recommend ed and will doubtless call oat a fall noose. Purchasers of reserved eeats should remember that the place of sale has been changed to the Pesadenf Music house. The recent storm left much snow on the first range of mountains, and a num ber of parties haye gone up recently to enjoy a tumble in it. On the northern slope the enow lies several feet deep, and abundant opportunity is offered for (led riding. _ ESCONDIDO. Good Crops Assured -Heal Estate Inter est*. Escondido, Dec. 30,—The bountiful rain of tbe past few days has left the ground in fine shape for plowing, and in every direction throughout tbe valley plows may be seen turning up the rich red coil, while every available team ie in demand to rush along tbe work that was retarded Defore these welcome ■bowers came. Tbe rainfall for this storm was 2 60 inches, making tbe total for the season 4.68 inches—about an inch and a half more than we bad at tbe same date last season. There will be more grain cowed this season than ever before. Shipments are abont at an end for this season. There ie still considerable grain in storage and some raisins also, but the owners will hold till prices are better. The Land and Town company hai several carloads of raieins still on band and Paul L. Hefferman has two carloads still in storage. Two carloads of raieins were sent ont last week, billed to Chicago. W. K. Bynhart and family of Hebron, Neb., arrived last week, to remain per manently. James Smith of Ashland, Neb., who arrived recently with his family, has purchased a place in the southwest part of town, and will ocenpy and improve it at once. Misses Marie Dickson, Lola Crise, Maud Justice, students at the etate nor mal school at Los Angeles, are at home for the vacation. Duncan Brown and Harry Voorhees of Pomona college are enjoying their va cation at home, The San Diego and Pacific Beach rail road ia extending its line to La Jolla, and the intention is to have care running to La Jolla by February Ist. From that point to Escondido is something less than 30 miles, and as the manager of tbe road has already interviewed a number of property owners along tbe way, it looks like the road might be extended with a little encouragement. There is certainly some business, to be had along tbe way, as it would pass through one of the best parts of San Diego county, while bo far as Escondido's business is concerned it need only be Baid tbat she now draws trade from 30 miles away, while the amount of grain shipped from here is variously estimated by those competent to judge at from 600 to 1000 carloads for this season. This, however, includes the grain shipped from tbe two nearest stations; also all within 12 miles. Report says Mr. Wm. D. Woodbridge has sold his fine ranch to hie mother; consideration, $30,000. It is one of the finest ranches in thie part of the etate — 20 acres in 6-year-old orange and lemon trees, 20 acres in vineyard, 10 acres in primes and 10 acres in figs, all 6 years old and in the best of condition. It ad joins the Land and Town company's 136-aore vineyard, about a mile and a half from town. LOS ANGELES HEKALD: SUNDAY/ MORNING, DECEMBER 81, 189*. Another fine piece of property is that recently purchased by Mr. Geo. Davis, of the firm of Lake, Davis & Co., of De troit, Mich. It waa formerly the home place of Mr. R. A. Thomas of San Diego, and ia a carefully kept and productive orchard of some 60 acrea, partly In de ciduous treea, but consisting principally of orange and lemon treee of tbe best Varieties. Eaeondido'a trade on Saturday, the 23d Inst, waa the largest we have no ticed thia aeaaon. Tbe streets were crowded with teams from every point of tbe compass, some of them from 15 to 20 miles in oppoalte directions. How ever, we always get tbe trade from 30 to 35 miles away in one direction, but not in ail. Going towards San Diego 14 or 15 milea is aa far away as the trade cornea thia way. Mr. and Mra. E. Durant celebrated their golden wedding on the 23d inst., 60 or 70 Invited gueats enjoying their hospitality on that occaalon. Fifty dol lars in gold made up one ot the gifts of frlenda, a dollar for each year of wedded life, and many were the wishes that they might yet live to enjoy their dia mond wedding. TERMINAL ISLAND. A Poetical Correspondent — The Fish Cannery. ' Terminal Island, Deo. 30. —Those who never saw tbe wonderful transformation in the topography of a place caused by the deceptive magio of mirages would think they lived in a land of enchant ment while gazing on the beautiful though perplexing shifting of scenes that noiselessly and swiftly follow each other over the glassy surface of tbe bay, especially at early dawn, or after tbe sun goes down behind the hills of Paloa Verdi in tbe gloaming. Santa Catalina at Bach times ia a veritable Beautiful Isle of tbe Sea we sing about. Phantom cities spring up and assume shape, only to dissolve and melt away again, like the baseless fabric of a dream. Such wondrone cities as we used to picture in our imagination dotted fairy land in the long ago. Tur reted castles, and mosques with tall, slender spires piercing tne eky appear and charm the eye and excite the ad miration by their transcendant beauty. Tbe Ganabl Lumber company are bnsy taking their annual account of stock. The company has done a very large business dnring tbe year, and the manager of the yard here, Mr. Sweet, ■ays tftat the prospect for the coming year is that their already large business will be more than doubled. There is at present on tbe ground abont 2,000,000 feet, the demand making it difficult to keep a larger stock at this yard. After the first of the year more vessels will be pnt on, and then look out for business. Already they are coming in, the barkentine Modoc, from tbe sound, reaching their wharf Friday with 650, --000 feet of pine. The fish canning company ia now in position to supply all tbe western coast with canned or cured fish. The diffi culty, so far, is that tbey have not enough boats of their own to keep them running at their foil capacity ; but this is something that can be provided for, and we understand that they intend to employ and build a fleet of fishing boats sufficient in number to keep the works supplied. Mrs. Soencer, wife of tbe local mana ger of the California Fish company, and some lady friends, came down to the island Friday and inspected the works. The beach was stnewn with shells Friday, and the gobble nm'a were oat after them in force. The yachts are in winter quarters, and look very trim and neat in undress uni form. SANTA MONICA. Santa Ana, Dec. 30. —It appears that Santa Ana has some pretty hard char acters loafing around the streets and stringent efforts should be made to rid tbe city of them. Last night as Ruby VVhitaon, a young gentleman, was going home from Mb work at McKane & Banker's about 7 o'c'ock. be was attacked by some one who stepped from behind a hedge di rectly behind him. The would-be rob ber commanded Whiteon to hold up but instead of doing so he turned round and told bis assailant to go to where frost never comes, and turned to walk on. He had hardly turned round before whiz went a missile directly over his scalp, catting the whole crown from his hat. Whitaon thought it about time to pall oat and did so at a quarter-horse gait with the highwayman in close pursuit. It is safe to say that Whiteon distanced bis pursuer, for when he landed fall length in the front door of his father's house the other fellow was no where to be seen. Young Whiteon was within a couple of blocks from home when at tacked. He ia the aon of Trustee Whit aon. A marriage license was issued by County Clerk Brock today to Sherman R. The game waa a very interesting and was hotly contested. Onr boys played a good game for their practice bat were outmatched in weight by the visitors. Game commenced at 2 p. m„ Whittier winning tbe toss, taking the ball, while Santa Ana went to the east goal. Whittier played the flying wedge, win ning 10 yards. There was nothing re markable in the first inning Have the center rush of Whittier, who by their superior weight carried the ball yard by yard toward their opponents goal and scored. The try at goal was a failure. The ball went to the center and Santa Ana had advanced to within 10 yards of Whittier'e goal when time was called. Santa Ana opened tbe second inning with a flying wedge, gaining 23 yardß, when Marks made a splendid run around the right, gaining five yards. Whittier recovered and forced the ball back to the center, where, failing to make their advance of five yards, Santa Ana took the ball and Day charged for 10 yards. It was Whittier'e ball, and the most hotly contested mass play of the day oc curred, but the visitors lost tbe ball. Santa Ana again lost, and Whittier forced a splendid opening on the right,, which was promptly stopped by Day. They repeated the same play on the left, but failed and lost 25 yards, Whittier taking tbe ball and forcing it over Santa Ana's line, but again failed on a tried goal. Ball went to center in Santa Ana'e hands, who gained 10 yards, but lost to Whittier. Jndson got tbe ball and made a good run to the right, gaining three yards. Ellis repeated the play on the right end, and Nickey made the most remarkable attack of the day. Time called at tbe Santa Ana 25-yard line, the score standing 8 to 0 in favor of Whit tier. The players were as follows: ' SANTA ANA. WHITTIER. The nine-montha-old daughter ot Mr. and Mrs. Dunham of West Anaheim ; swallowed an open eafety pin on Sunday morning, which has not aa yet been removed. The mother was washing at tbe time and carelessly gAve the piu to tbe baby to play with. Mr. Fowler informs us that the capi talists who have signified their inten tion of taking the sugar bonds have telegraphed that they are ready to ad vance VoI),HOC pending negotiations for the transfer of the bonds, which they regard aa being gilt-edged. Tbe sugar house goes thia year. Tbe little child of Mr. Denser, who was accidentally shot in the abdomen at its Placentia home last week, by the accidental discharge of a cartridge with which ita brother was playing, ia re ported to be ont of danger and on tbe road to recovery. Some aurpriae seems manifest among the Santa Ana correspondents—Santa Ana is filled with correspondents, and like the moon and Yum Yum they are pretty wide awake—over the recent an nouncement to the effect that contracts will be made here for beets to be raised for Chino. For upwards of a month an advertisement has been running in our columns announcing that such contracts would be made, and from time to time during the past several months we have referred to the fact tbat beeta would be contracted for at this point for the big refinery over the hills. At least 4000 acres will be planted for the refinery here, and this rain pattering on the roof is the thing to gladden the hearts of the buoyant and enthusiastic beet raiser, and probably 2000 acrea will be raised in addition for Chino. That is the limit, were it not for which as many acres could probably be contracted for aa will be planted for home consump tion. Furthermore, if the Chino re finery finds itself, on account of the largely increased acreage planted in ita vicinity, to be unable to handle all the beets contracted for, a trainload now and then may be rnn into the refinery here, to be made into anger. O yea, we are going to raiae beeta here thia year, and have the sugar house, and a whole lot of other things, just as we have all along been saying, and we have not been talking through our hat either. If theae frienda of oura, tbe Santa Ana correspondents, will follow us, they'll wear diamonds yet—"do they follow na —do they understand what we mean?" —[Gazette, M'KEB RANKIN.
