Hunewell was badly bruised by Jim O'Hara and another man. Hunewell was treated at the receiving hospital. John Burke, Frank White and T. B. Stanton were arrested at San Gabriel yesterday for petty larceny. They were lodged in the county jail. Tbe praise service tbat was to bave been given last Sunday night in the First Congregational church will be given tonight sure. Tbe public cordial ly invited. If tbe number of depredations re ported count for anything, the city has more than its share of thieves and other bad men. Hardly a day passes but some burglary is reported to tbe police. The musical praise service that was to have been given in the First Congrega tional cbnrcb on last Sunday evening and was postponed on account of the prevailing colds, will surely be given to nigbt. The California State Beekeepers asso ciation will hold their annual conven tion this week in this city at the cham ber of commerce on January 23d and 24tb. Prof. A. J. Hla Strut* Court act Leads His Friends to Believe Tbat He Is Mentally Deranged. Clarence Stewart, the Riverside mer chant who mysteriously disappeared from this city last Sunday, was found yesterday at Lompoc, 70 miles north of Santa Barbara. W. W. Phelps of Riverside, who went in search of the missing man, took him in charge, and will probably return to morrow. Stewart was seen Inst Wednesday in Ventura, whence he was traced north ward. He went to Santa Barbara and took the stage to Lompoc, where he arrived Friday night. His peculiar action has caused bis frieuds to believe be is demented. A message to the Herald from Ventura !a«t night states that it was reported tbat be is suffering from dementia. Mr. Frank M. Selover of the Santa Barbara Independent, who arrived in the city last evening, gave tbe following account of Stewart's actions as it was j given to him: Stewart made bis appearance in Santa Barbara Thursday evening, arriving on the 7 o'clock train from the south, pre sumably coming from Ventura, It was not known in Santa Barbara at that time that Stewart was missing, else officers would have been on tbe watcb for anyone answering the description. As it was, Stewart took the Commercial hotel 'bus at the depot, but did not go to the hotel. Where he spent Thurs day night is a mystery. The next morning he went to tbe stage office and purchased a ticket to Lompoc. He was particular to engagu the seat with the driver, but as that individual stated afterward, had not one word to say during the 60 miles' ride. When the agent asked Stewart regard ing his baggage the latter remarked tbat he traveled without baggage. lit gave his name aa "F. M. Cone it," but tin stage man remembered how be looked and was positive, when reading nexi day the Herald's neconnt of the disap pearance, tbat the strange passenger was Clarence Stewart. At tbe Lompoc hotel tbe man regis tered as "C. H. Stevens, Kaiserville." It wbb mainly through the efforts oi Sheriff Bougbton of Santa Harbara thai Stewart waa discovered at Lompoc. The sheriff, acting under inquiries from Riv- Brside, telepboned to various parts ol the county, and was successful when Lompoc was called. "C. H. Stevens" was readily recognized by the hotel men ac Clarence Stewart, the Riverside mer chant. The deputy sheriff at Lompoc wae told to watch the man but not arrest him unless he should start to leave. W. W. Pheipß, the friend of Mr. Stew art who has been searching the country for days, arrived in Santa Barbara Fri day nigbt and left for Lompoc by the Btage yesterday to bring Mr. Stewart back to his distracted family. He should reach Los Angeles Sunday night or Monday. ASSOCIATED CHARITIES. a ■aria* of Ward Meetings lo Be Held for Organization. A meeting of the associated charities will be held in the different wards, to which all persons interested in charity 1 work are requested to attsnd, to take steps towards the organizing of a dis trict conference to co-operate with the associated charities. Aa the object anil success of the association depends very greatly upon the intereet and support of evory citizen, it ie earnestly desired that all persons wishing their charity worth ily bestowed should attend this meeting and giv" their moral support to the work. Representatives of tbe asßoci ated charities will be present to give any information desired as to tbe plan of work and render all assistance possi ble. The varioue wards will hold their meetings as follows: Wednesday evening, Janaary 24th, at 7:30, tbe First ward will meet at the Frieuds' mission, 226 Downey avenue. Third ward will meet in tbe parlors of the First Presbyterian chutch, corner Second and Broadway, Fourth ward at Central M. E. church. Fifteenth street, west of Main. Seventh ward, at the residence of Brainard Smith, 415 East Fourth street. Ninth ward, at tbe Baptist chnrch, Boyle Heights, at 2 o'clock p.m. of same date. The Second. In a runaway accident last night at 6 o'clock Phillip Werner, a draughtsman in the city engineer's office, was seri ously injured. Hie hip was dislocated and his ankle broken. He was out driving with a friend when the horse took fright and ran. Both were thrown from the buggy, which was smashed into kindling. The accident occurred at Sixteenth street and Grand j avenue.
