THIS IS RICHNESS. G. HAMILTON GRIFFIN AS A PHILANTHROPIST. Ho Ia Endeavoring to Work ths Oaila* !«»• Chlcea/oans by Means of an Kleetrloal Company. A letter has been received at tbe Herald office in which inquiries are made abont a former resident of Los Angeles. Tbe letter is as follows: Chicago, February 7. 1894. Editors Los Angeles Hkralp, Los Angeles, Cal. There is a gentleman in the city who gives his name ac Dr. G. Hamilton Grif fin whom, I believe, is a practicing phy sician, that ie soliciting subscriptions to capital etock of an electric company, which company hae for its object the manufacture of medical electric gener ators, or something in that line. He is, apparently, a very estimable gentleman, and considerable of a philanthropist, and I am mnch impressed with bis gen eral deportment, etc. A friend of mine stated to me, however, that the gentle man came from California, and that be fore intereeting myself in bie company tbat I bad better write to yon; tbat yon were acquainted with his history, and | might be able to give me some informa- En that would be of material benefit to v I enclose a stamped envelope for reply and trust I am not asking too much of you in making this request. Yours, very respectfully, William F." Grower. Tbe writer of the above came to the correct shop for information. G. Ham ilton Griffin is well known in tbis city. Those who remember his brilliant ca reer as a moral agriculturist hereabonts will appreciate tbe statement by Mr. Grower tbat he is "considerable of a philanthropist." It is sometimes said that a thing is enough to make a horse laugh, but G. Hamilton, of "smoke ball" and "natural champagne" fame, as a philanthropist, should cause cach innation in the entire animal kingdom, including dodoa. Yes, Mr. Griffin came from California, and also from British Columbia. Before leaving Los Angelea be worked the vineyard freely, nntil it waa, metaphor ically apeaking, squeezed dry. Various people were bit. Perhaps the funniest fake he worked here was his magnifi cent discovery of how to make a natural champagne. He interested capitalists, and gave a banquet, at which the guests were meliowed up before the "natural" was placed before them. "Magnifique," they said. A big ware house wae built and shekels cast upon tbe waters that never came bick. In British Columbia Dr. G. H. G. went to jail and made frienda with his keepers. When he came out he had a big mining scheme. Now be bas turned np in Chicago, and Mr. Grower and bis friends will bave a chance to become better acquainted with hit versatility aa time goes on. There are many people in Los Angeles who have in the p«Bt been "impressed" with the jolly doctor'e "general deportment, etc." If Mr. Grower will juet connubiate freely with Dr. G. H. (iriffin he will be convinced that be ia old philanthropy himself. PERSONAL. Senator R. B. Carpenter arrived from San Francisco yesterday to meet his eldest eon who comes from Covington, Ky. Young Mr. Baldwin husband of E. J. Baldwin's daughter, arrived here yester day and joined bis wife at Santa Anita, Mark Plaieted, editor of (he Riverside Enterprise, is in tbe city. Tbe Cyclones and the Temple street ball club had a very interesting game at the Temple etreet grounds yesterday afternoon. Tbe Cyclones did not get a run until the ninth inning, when they knocked out five runs, winning tbe game by a score of 6 to 3. Huntley pitched a very good game for the Cy clones. ■When Baby was sick, we gave her Castoria. When she was a Child, she cried for Castoria. When she became Miss, she clung to Castoria. Probably tbe moat important an nouncement in real estate circles is that of tbe coming ealb of 1000 acres of choice selected land of the famous Santa Anita ranclio, the finest part of the beautiful San Gabriel valley, the property of E. J. Baldwin of San Fran cisco. This block of a thousand acres has been subdivided into tracts of 10 acres and upwards will and be sold under the hammer by tbe well-known reliable firm of Easton, Eldridge & Go., on Sat urday, the 24tb. Mr. George Eaeton of that firm re turned from Santa Anita yesterday, after having concluded tbe final ar rangements for the sale of the amount of land mentioned. The land in question, its unrivaled location, ita wonderful fertility and adaptability to all forms of agriculture and horticulture are matters of national reputation, and are too well known to be reiterated. The intention of this energetic firm is to operate one of tbe popular first-class excursions to the noted ranch on tbat day from Lob Angeles, Pasadena and all other neighboring towns at a merely nominal rate for tickets, and thus afford to all an opportunity of viewing the many beauties of thiß famous property* Mr. H. A. Unruh, the general man ager of Mr. Baldwin's properties, haß in hand tbe furnishing of the free collation to be served on tbe grounds. It is need less to say that with his most hospitable traits he will spread as line an al fresco repast as the wonderiully varied products of tbe ranch nnd the illimit able resources at his command will per mit. Mr. Unrnh has also consented to bave the world-famons string of Santa Anita thoroughbreds parade before the excur sionists at lunch time before the marquee. This will afford those present a chance to see such noted race winners as Emperor of Norfolk, Gano, Clieve aen, Key del Santa Anita and many others. Mr. Easton is a most conservative gentleman, and in response to a query as to the number of people he expected on the excursion, he replied: "We will probably have a very large gathering of people. From tbe inquiries made of ua up to date, tliey will comprise a most intelligent and enterprising portion of the population of thie city and contigu ous points." Those, however, who have resided in this county for any length of time, and who under the great interest shown in this ranch, and who appreciate the fact that on this occasion the doors to the exquisite attractions thereabouts will be thrown wide open, can predict without fear of over-estimating that this will be one of, if not the largest ever known in Los Angeleo. It ia a question whether or not the railroad agreeing to furnioh the trans portation can provide a sufficient num ber of cars to carry tbe immense throng. SOCIETY. The social event of the Eatjt Side oc curred on Thursday everting of this week at the home of Fred J. Osborne. Some time ago invitations, were sent out to the many friends of Mr. Osborne, an nouncing that on Thursday evening, February 8, 1894, an entertainment would be given them and asking their "stag" presence. The guests divided off in squads and various games, with the festive paste boards, were coon in full blast. The center of attraction was the prize whist game, which wae exciting from start to finish. When the game wae finished it stood, Pete Boyle and Charles Bradford, grand prizes; H. V. Van Dusen and ex- Tax Collector Whitney booby prizes. It was seen that Van and Whitney were not in it at any stage of tbe game, the first named being considered more of an exoert handling letters and the latter handling tax receipts. The finale came in the form of tbe presentation of a handsome silver set of six pieces with the letter "O" and the inscription, "Presented to F. J. O on his 36th birthday, February 8, 1894," neatly engraved upon each piece. This handsome souvenir was present ed to Mr. Osborne by the entire com pany, and shows the high esteem in which tbe gentleman is held by those who know him. Dnring the evening music was fur nished by Mrs. F. .T. Osborne and Mrs. ST. 0. Browning, which was highly ap preciated. After many wieheß for his future hap piness and prosperity and many returns of his birthday anniversary, the com pany bade him good night and returned to their homes. Those present were: Messrs. The occasion of the party was the receipt of news tbat tbe charges preferred against the colonel by Captain Glouner of com pany C had been disapproved at head quarters and to show the hearty concord ance of the officers with thie action.
