10 WHEN TALKING WITH HORSEMEN They Use a Language That Is All Their Own. The Grammar of Good English Is Barred From It. There Ar* Many Conflicting Thing:! In tha Tarmi or the Turf, But Tbey All "Bo" When Ton Are "Welt." Tub citizen of Los Angeles who, dar ing the next few weeks, visits Agricul tural park or iB idling around hotel cor ridors and finds his ears assailed by a peculiar language, familiar enough in the matter of words, but lacking in ex pressiveness, must not believe that the city haa been invaded by some foreign element which has adapted English words to new meanings. He must un derstand that he has "run up against" a "field" of sports who are talking "horse." A dictionary ol tha Horseman lan guage is yet to be written, but if the average citizen conld be supplied with such a thing, perhaps by dint of close application to it, aided by a retentive memory, he conld in course ol tune be able to'listen to a conversation between horsemen and train BOine faint glimmer ings of tbeir meaning. Without a dic tionary ol the horseman language or a long time spent among the habitues of the track he might as well listen to a conversation between a Fiji isla'uder aud a Howery tough. In the tirst place, grammar doesn t figure in the language of horsemen at all. In other words, as the horseman would say. "grammar is barred." For j inatenee, he cays: "I lose 40 plunks on j Applejack vvsterday," when he nieanß that he lost $40 by betting that a horse called Applejack would win. Andagain he says,'"l win out,")() cases on a dead sure eliot, yesterday," when tiie average linguist would have said, "I won 1(50 yesterday on a horse that was very sure to win." And the horfiemau might follow up this remark with, "Ii he . hadn't 'sized' a 'real jammer' I would n't have bet bim, but I see v chance to 'go a raker' and win out without any show for getting 'dumped' aud I 'went the pile." The translation of this re mark would be that if the horse had not appeared to him to have beeu sure to win he would not have bet ou him at all, but that he saw a chance to bet a good amount on the borse and get even on some previous losses, with no chance of losing, and consequently he bet all he could. Now, for the benefit of people who rosy want to mingle with the noted trackmen now in the city, or poßsihly may aspire to get "dead next" on the coming racee, a few of the termß most commonly iv use by hursemeu, with tDeir meaning, will lollow. When a horse goes "all to pieces," the track officials do not go out with a wheelbarrow aud gather up the parts. The fact is that a horse which hag gone all to piecßß has simply acted badly in a ra<'e and lost grouna, or, again, may go "all to pieces" before a race and not ba able to take training. A horse in this condition would be "amisa" when the trainer decided not to enter it for a race. A borse that has a good "appui" ia not necessarily ready for the boneyard, because nearly all that aile it is that its mouth is sensitive to the bit. Running horßes are "bangtails," but becanee they Bometimeß make a "gruel ing finish" it does not follow that they are fed on gruel exclusively. When they make a "grueling finish" tbey are sim ply lorced to their greateet speed just before coming under the wire. Neither doea a horße have to be ridden by "Snapper Garrison" to make a "Gar rißon ti.Hßh," bnt it haa to be a little behind when turning into the stretch, and wnen near the finiah pass the oth ers. When one horse "bores" another it doesn't need to use a gimlet; it simply rube no against the ottier on a turn. Ihe barrel of a horse is not ÜBed to put beer or appie cider in, aa some might suppose, but is what common people would call hiß body. The bottom ol a horee is not the un der side of it, either. It ~ its powerß of endurance when speed for a long dis tance is required. A horse is "bishoped" when his teeth have been tampered with, aud "howled over" when beaten. Yon wouldn't give a horae a "breather" with a pair of bel lows, bat Bimply let him "jog" around the circle once or twice. When tt jockey "calls upon" a horse the affair is very informal and nncera moniouß. He simply uses every effort in his power to put his "mount" in tbe lepd and keep him there. A horse is "collared" when a horse whioh has been behind him moves up to and past him, and when the other gets far enough paßt so tbat yuu can ccc daylight be tween the back o< the tirst jockey and the face uf ttie rear horse, the tirst horee has "come away." If the first horse falls back and then goes past a second time he has "come ngain." When an owner has two hornet* in the same race, he is "coupled in tbe bets" aud all are made against the "stable" and not the individual horses of the owner. A "crack" is not necessarily a split in the jockey's skin-tight silk panties, but may be a superior horee, while a "crackerjaok" ia a worid-Deater or rec ord-breaker in hie olase. The jockey gatß a "cropper" when he fella from hie mount, and "cuts loose" when he "sends" iiiß horae for "ail it ia worth" after having held it back for awhile. When he doea that he may he "jockeying" or he may not, but anyway he ttiinks he iB. A "dark lioree" may or may not be a hite, but at any rate the general pub lio doesn't know how good he is. Kven a "dead" Horae tray continue to stay in a race, but for some reason bent known to bis owner, he ia not permitted to win. Yon can "ecratch" a horße without using a line-tooth comb or a sharp stick, by simply withdrawing him from a race alter he has been entered, Betters are "dumped" when they back a horse which ia generally ex pected to win and it doesn't, but if they keep right on betting notwithstanding thia, they are still "following." A "bookie" ie he who keepe. "books," i. c., makes opportunity for people to bet on the races and he may get "full" and uot touch a drop of liquor, by sud denly deciding that he kite made all the bets be cares to on a certain raoe. A horee, as everybody knows, seldom has hands, and yet he wins "bands i down" when it ia ao eaay for him to win that bis jooaey has no occasion to use the whip. A horae is "in a ruck" when he is co far behind tbe others at the etart of the stretch that he could not possibly win, aud he is "ia a hunt" when he ii be hind but close so that to the chances for his winning are Btill good. A "follower" is "in clover" when he has arranged his bets co that he haa chances of winning and cannot possibly lose. No matter the sex of a borse, it is a "maiden" until it wins a race, and a horse's owner "meant" if he really wanted his horse to win, but if he did not want the horse to win he merely bad it "out for an airing." A horße whioh comes in second in a race wins "place,' and is a plater if be is only of ordinary ability. A horse gets in a "pocket" when ths other horses close up jast ahead of him and he bas to be "pulled" in order to get behind and go around if he would get the lead. When a "follower" talks about a "pony" he ie "close," and refers to $25, but when be mentions "monkey" he is "flush up," because a "monkey" is $500. There ie just as much to a "quarter horee" as there is to a whole one, but the "quarter horse" is good for short distance racing only. A "repeat" race is where the race is run in heats, and the winner must win two of the heats. A horse "ahoots his bolt" when he runs ahead of the otuers for a distance and then falls back aud is unable to "keep the pace." A "skate" is an awkward-gaited ani mal ; usually unable to run races, and a horse that cornea in third iv a race is a "show." A "Sunday" horse is one that wina only occasionally, and when he falls far behind the others he is "tailed off," or "takes trail." The "whipper iv" isn't a tr.au hired to whip the horses in a race, in fact it isn't a man at all, but juet the laat horae to go under the wire at the start. There are thousands of other terras used around tbe track and etables by jockeys and horsemen, but uot all of ihetn are standard and can only be un derstood when a man lives among the Iraternitv and acquires their use by con stant practice. Death of the Helena Merchant From Morphine. lie Lay Unconscious for Jfearly Three Days. Joseph Conrad Was a Brother of the Proseoutor In the Dr. Graves Murder Vase—lnquest Today. Joseph H. Conrad, the Helena mer* chant, died in the receiving hospital at 5 o'clock last evening, from morphine taken with euicidal intent. It was the third and last attempt by the despsrate man. Six months ago Conrad brought hia family to 1 v Angelea Irom Montana and they went to live at the Belmont hotel. The family consisted of the wife aud two pretty little children, the very image of tbeir mother. Conrad waa at one time a wealthy commiaeion merchant of the Montana capital, where his brother, John H , ia now engaged in business. He met with mauy reverses and came west in a vain endeavor to again build up in worldly goods. He had not been in thia city long when he became more or iesa despon dent over his failure to rifle- nr make more than a living. He met men whom but few could associate with without drinking or gambling, yet con sidering hia surroundings and acquain tances, Conrad waa a hearty, liberal and good man. Hia heartbroken wiie says he never drank, that if he did she never knew it. lie whs always a good bust band. Soon after Conrad'e arrival in the city from hia northwestern home he became despondent, and on two occasions at tempted suicide. He barely recovered from the second attempt, for he took enough morphine to have killed three or four men. I'rompt work by the phyai ciana saved him. Last Thursday night, or perhaps early Friday morning, Conrad engaged a room at the Reed bouse, on First street, between Main and Los Angeles, and re marked to the landlady that he was suffering Irom asthma. Thia was evi dently n dodge which the landlady heeded not. He had lelt home aa usual in tbe morning and no eign of despond ency waa noticed by bia wife. About 11 o'clock of Friday the land lady of the Raed hotiae heard unuaually heavy breathing in Conrad's room. An investigation further aroused her ena picion, and with assistance ehe burst open the door. The deapondent man j waa lying in bed, undressed. A bottle hail filled with morphine stood upon the table by the bedside. That told the atorv. The apparently dying man was re moved to the leceiving hospital, where Police Surgeon Bryant worked night and day to eiive him. Lute Friday night Conrad of coarse failed to go home and his wile became uneasy. A friend found him at tha hospital and told the wife the whole oircumitenoeSt Saturday morning ehe went to hia eide and re- I maiued with him until he died. Hei I devotion was remarked by all, and when he shaped the last time last evening she ' broke down nnd cried like a child. Her grief was pitiable in the extreme. Conrad never regained consciousnesa and was exactly 50 houra in more or lees agony. He leavea three brothers in the east arid northwest.
