to UNDER COVER OF DARKNESS The Disreputable Methods of Cowardly Men A DESPICABLE DEFACEMENT The Residence ol J. T. She ward Smeared With Petroleum 4a Aadeat Tin Wash-Bolltr Full el the Sturl Damped en Hie Front Step* and fa Cement Sidewalks £9ome persons who object to the position taken by Mr. J. T. Sheward with refer ence to the regulation of the oil wells In the western part of the city conceived what tbey thought was a bright idea, and carried it out Friday night onder cover of darkness. Mr. Sheward has a handsome residence on Hockwood stieet, between Belmont and Union avenues, with a broad cement walk about 35 feet long leading to the steps and another broad cement walk in front of tbe property. Some time during the night two per sons and possibly more carried an old tin wash-boiler full of crude petroleum to the esidence steps and poured its disagreea ble contents upon them. They then car ried the boiler to a vacant lot across the street and west from the residence, where they left it and where it was found yester day morning, after tits ftmiily discovered the dirty trick. Tlio petroleum ran down the steps, spoiling them, and nearly covered the walk, finding its way clear to tho street across tlio content sidewalk, which was also smeared with the sticky stuff in a number of places. Tlie petroleum was not cleared off dur ing tho day, and the scene of the occur rence v:aj Visited by many of tho neigh bors, who felt as much outraged by it as Mr. Sheward himself. Tho police wero notified and an attempt is being made to discover tlie perpetra tors, although the latter left no c.tic to tln ir identity except the boiler in which they carried their unsavory load. S*v*r«l oil well owners spoke in un measured terms of tlie petty spito work shown by those who did tlio trick, and said they wouid use their best endeavors in assisting Mr. Sheward to ferret them out and havo them punished. Mr. Shew ard himself, when seen at his storo on Spring street, said that he had offered reward for tlie arrest and conviction of tlie night hawks and vandals. He stated that this is the second time such a trick has been played upon those resi dence owners who have taken a similar position to tbat taken by him. Between four months ago citide petroleum was smeared about the residence of Dr. L. W. Wells in much the same way. al though not to such a great extent as in this case. Mr. Sheward also states that ho is not fighting the industry, but the manner in which it has been conducted, believing that to be offensive and detrimental to his bouse and to the residence property interests of his neighborhood. He nad, he said, conducted his opposition law fully and had done nothing that could be criticised from a moral or legal stand point. From the chance passing by of two neighbors, Mr. Sheward thought the pe troleum bearers had accomplished their purpose in tlie early part of Friday night oetween 0 and 10:30 o'clock. They were returning home at the latter hour and observed a dark stain on the walk in front of tlie residence, bin supposed it was water from a faucet that stands near i the house. The wash ooiler is an i ancient affair, sucli us is commonly used, and up to last night tlie police had not been able to trace it to any especial owner. ELECTRIC LINE COLLISION The Account of the Injuries Inflicted Exaggerated No Amputation Was Nccesscry.-The Limb la Set and Doing Nicely—The Other Injuries Not Serlo-rs Tho account of the Tasadona electric line collision which appeared in yester day's Herald was an inaccurate one. The account of the injuries sustained by pas sengers upon the two unlucky cara was somewhat exaggerated. Frank Perrillat, who suffered a broken leg, was reported to have undergone an amputation of the limb. Such, tortunate ly, was not the case. The bones are nicely set, and Dr. Hodge hopes for a quick mend and ono that wiil leave the patient with good sound legs to do him a full term of service. Of those reported to be otherwise in jured only three wore injured to any great extent, and theso injuries wero confined to being cut by glass, inflicting surface or Besh wounds* exclusively. Two Hundred dollars will cover the damage to tbe cars. Superintendent Clark deeply regrets the accident. He is pushing the double-tracking of the entire road as rapidly as possible, and states that the point at which tlie accident oc curred is the only portion of the line where such an unfortunate happening could have taken place. The combination of a sharp cone, the bouse and its shelt ering grove <>f trees, obstructs the view of tlie rails as nowhere else on tho line.
