CHICAGO MARKET
The Day's Transactions on the Chicago Board
nf Trade
CHICAGO, May 28.— Wheat opened
with an emphatic enunciation of its bul
lish principle,. Tho generally prevailing
piico was 80 cents lor July. Some few
Bale, were made at 7i)a.i, simultaneously
with some.purchases at 80 1-2. It *.old on
the curb yesterday afternoon at 7S :;-8.
The weakness yesterday had In great
measure been because of the signal se"
vice predictions of heavy storn s gather
ing In tho far northwest, but today the
absence of rain caused tho strong open
ing. The foreign markets wero weak
and lower. Receipts here and in the
northwest were heavy. At noon the mar
ket hail tumbled from 80 s*B cents to
79 1-4, recovered again to 80 i-s, dropped
once more to 7P 1-4, and again recovered
to so 1-2. For a titno it hung around
7!» 3-4, but so'in dropped to a lower point
than the previous low point, touching 7!i
cents. Business was smaller In volume
than tin the day beforo until the last half
hour, but the frequency and character of
tbo fluctuations indicated very little
abatement in the nervousness. The cable
reports Paris and Berlin markets lower,
but the reports of crop damage already
done aro alarming, and dispatches from
Nebraska anil Kansas report hot winds
scorching up what vegetation remains.
July was bringing HI 1 X about; tift.ion
minutes from the close and the close was
l-l miller that.
J July corn opened at from 53 tj 53 3-8,
and before it ceased to advance it sold at
54 cents. It reacted to 53 3-4, rose again
to .VI 1 8, off from that to 53 3-4 again,
then up to 64 1-*, and closed at -Vl 7-H bid.
Oats opened firmer and closed very
strong at an advance of 1 1-2 on the
nearer deliveries and 1 7-3 up on Septem
ber.
Pork started With a gain of 12 1-2 cent),
compared with yesterday's closing prices,
advanced another 7 1-2 cents ami closed
with all but 2 1-2 cents of the day's ad
vance to tho good. Lard and ribs pursued
a similar course, and at the ond each were
7 1-2 cents higher for the day.
