SANTA Ar.* tentorial Day Observances Ex-Confederates Excluded SANTA ANA. May 2!!--Sorae people ro on tiie ok] adage that there is always room for one more. There is of course a limit to all things. The politics of the new publication is : supposed to be Populist, but it is not I known for certain. We now havo three I good weeklies, one good daily and a good j circulation of tiie three Lot; AnSoles papers ' which pretty well covers all the territory. It has been the custom of the G. A. R.s ■ ail over tho state to invite the ex-con ; federate soldiers tjo oin in the exercises on Decoration day, and it has been done I in Santa Ana in other years, and in j nearly every case some of the ex-con- | | federate soldiers have come out and j marched with the vets; and tbe remark ! i was always. "How nice it seems to see ; two opposing armies join in the deco rating of the soldiers' graves.'' It is tho [ desire of a great many citizens to see a : better feeling existing between the vet- t erans and ex-confederates. Tnis year no invitation has been extended to tho ex confederates to join in tiie exercises of i the day. which, of course, will exclude them from taking any part whatever, f The writer of this is neither a veteran j ncr an ex-confederate, but. would be glad to see the better judgment of the con servative element in the ranks of the veteran union soldiers prevail, and tho bitter feeling of those who aro opposed to a mingling of the blue and the gray Stamped out, so the two colois can be ' brought siile by side. There are a great ! many ex-confederate soldiers in this city 1 and vicinity who would be glad to join in ! the Decoration day exercises, it they [ were treated more as old soldiers than like intruders and "rebels." The cir cumstances and days that made the two are past and should be forgotten. W. H. ' SAN BERNARDINO The fljsterious Death of a Frenchman { Yesterday ; ".' ■'*! ;*< ink SAN BERNARDINO, May*J»>i|es>flb Coleniont. the Frenchman residing in Cajon pass, who was an important wit ness in the Mcd lin murder cause which is set for trial June 15, was found burned to a crisp in the ashes nf his cabin yester day morning, and before tbo cabin had been burned the Frenchman had been shot through the heart. Whether it is a murder or a suicide is as yet difficult to determine. Coleniont was last seen alive on Monday afternoon about 2 o'clock. He called at Colonel Doyle's place, futber down tbo canyon, that day and spent some time at the neighbor's house. When he left to go to bit own cabin be was alone, and no one was seen in the vicinity during the afternoon or evening who can be in any j wav connected w'th bis death. About . | o'clock in tne evening Thomas Ili.lt. sr., who lives two or three miles further down the canyon,! aw a ligiit in the vicinity of the Frenchman's place, which was no ] do.ibt made by the names id the burning cabin, and while ho thought of that at the time, saving that the light was too bright to have been irom a brush pile, j nothing was done about it until yester day morning. , , . , His body was charred and burned be- | yond recognition, and hardly v member j or an organ bad escaped the Haines, but Within the shell of the body the snrreon found the vital organ almost unscathed, and pierced completely through with a rifle ball. , , . Lying close by was tbe barrel of the weapon, the stock having been entirely buri.cd away, and in the end of the bar rel was the shell of a cartridge, with the i mark of a hummer plainly indented, showing that the cartridge had not been exploded by tiie heat, but had been bred from the gun. , \,, mlier evidence was furnisi c I by tho HUiioundtuas. The posltnn of (V. cm cits body indicated that he had been lying on his bunk when tbe cabin burned, and A. A** CM, M. A Je. Km. W till " iur 25 cts. Acting Coroner Smile empanelled 'lie following j'irois: ,1. Hopper, Henry Hop per, U M. Spiecher. I-'. L. Holoomb. Joseph Caclck and J. F. Williams. They viewed the premises, heard tho testimony of Dr. Dickey alter he hail examined the body and foumi the wound in the heart, and then the few neighbors who were present pave their lestiomnv. which leaned entirely to the theory of suicide and resulted in the jury bringing in that verdict. Coleniont was an important witness for the prosecution in the case against W. L. Toher. charged with the murder of J. P. Widlln, and by many his death is as sociated with the fact. There is also another theory that Coleniont may have been killed for money. He recently sold his homestead to Dr. R. D. Davidson of this city. and received some cash in pay ment. It is suggested that this was known and may have tempted some one's cupidity, who shot and robiied tbe old man and then burned lhe cabin to conceal his tracks. San Bernardino is to have a boom paper.
