MANCHESTER, June 7.—FlorUell,

Manchester cup today against a large
Jield.wh.ch Included M. I. Dwyer'l B»n
--quet. Florizell was a favorite in tbe bet
ting. 7 to 2, but the Americans, who
turned ou j.in large numbers, backed
Banuqet heavily; so just before the race
the odds were 8 to t. wbereaa a fortnight
ago Ihev were 20 to 2. Mr. Cohen',
brown colt Oreenlawn was second. P.
Buchanan's chestnut colt The Docker,
third. Kacb of these is a four-year-old.
The big raco was witnessed by fully
80 OOU people. The enclosures and tbe
grand stand, as well as the held were
packed tn suffocation, and the spectators
had barely room to move. Banquet 11
was the lirst of the cup-bolder, to make
his appearance in the paddock. Mo at
tracted tho attention of the sports ny his
zebra-like coverling, on which his name
was scrawled in large irregular letters.
Ho was taken out ol the course and
given a warming up gallop. When l'lon
zcMl made In-, appearance be was sur
rounded by an enthusiastic crowd of
backers. His victory was a popular one.
ami as lie Hashed under the wiro the
spectators threw their hats in the air,
while the ladies waved their parasols ana
handkerchiefs, and deafening cheers
made the welkin ring for fully live min
utes after. There wai another outburst
when the band played God Mess the
l'rince of Wales.
During the race the Croker an<f*Dwyer
parties occupied tbe most prominent box
in the grand stand. Mr. Dwyer stood
leaning against the rail of the hex and
was tho coolest man of the multitude of
persuns present at the race.
Croker and Dwyer did not speak en
couragingly of the chances of Banquet
II when replying to Hie inquiries of their
American friends. The starting price of
Florizrl II was 11 to I. 'I he Prince of
Wales was not present al tbe race.
Rodomont jumped into the lead at the
start, closely followed by Banquet 11, but
the American geldinK was soon headed
by Tho Rush. The trio ran in tliis or
der past the mile post, with Rodomont
.forcing the race at a good clip. Rodo
luont led into the stretch, while Banquet
11, who had been all the time in the
rear, pulled on the outsido and soon had
Rodomont and The Hush beaten. Tak
ing the lead about lull yards from the
finish, Florizel won handily from Green
Lawn and Tho Docker, who finished sec
ond and third respectively. Banquet
liuished tenth.
THE WHISKY TRUST
All the Distilleries Being (iuardej by Armed
.len
CHICAGO, June 7.—A local paper
says: Kvery distillery in tho i"nited
Ktates contrnlleil by the whisky trust has
been turue«l Into an arsenal. For nearly
n month past United States deputy mar
shals have bad their quarters in tiie dis
tilleries. They are ail heavily armed and
prepared to resist any attack that may
be made, or any attempt to take pos
session.
It is not incendiaries or dynamiters
that the receivers fear. A decision is
daily expected from the supreme court of
the state which may have the effect of
precipitating hostilities. Tbdse may
take a criminal form and add a new
phase of litigation to the legal troubles of
the trust. On the other hand they may be
of a more forceful character, In the
nature of a pitched battle with firearms.
The anxiously expected decision i* in
the case of the DisUUins and Cattle Feed
ing company vs. the People, ex rel. the
attorney-general. This is the case where
General ualone> filed information for a
writ of quo warranto, declaring the com
pany to ho ati illegal corporation: in
effect, a trust and existing contrary to
tlie anti-trust laws of tho state. Ilf was
sustained by the circuit court. Tho de
cision was appealed by the trust to tho
supreme court, and a decision is expected
within a few days.
