IL_ LOCAL FIELD OF COMMERCE Weekly Review of the Local Trade Conditions DRIED FRUIT IS WAITING Moderate Business and a Few Failures for Small Amounts Possibilities of the California Sardine Canning Industry, in View of a Short Out. put from Europe R. W. Burnbam, manager for R, G. Dun .fe Co., furnishes tbe following weekly review of local trade conditionj: The past week has been barren of any feature of importance. General jobbing business has been only moaeratelv active. Lumber and hardware brisk, strong de mand and an upward tendency in prices. Retailers report a fair movement in trade, but not as liberal as might be ex pected, now tbat the stimmet exodus is over. In the locul produce market supplies of fresh fruits nave been plentiful to meet requirements of trade, and prices had an easy tone. lined fruits, in which interest centers at this season, are still quiet; demand is light, but concessions of any importance are not made. The now crop stock in creases, still grower and seller hold values tirmly and tho easterner plays a waiting game. Hanks report an abundant supply of \\roe money for borrowers on good secur ity, but demand only moderate. There have been only three failures in our distiict so far this month, with lia bilities aggregating 111,300; assets, nom inally, $5000. California pish Interests A gentleman who is familiar with the European fish interests and has some knowledge of California's possibilities in this line, says that the European sardine crop will be short this yeai; in fact there will be practically no crop at ail, as the lish have not yet begun to run, although the season is already late and the sar dines are too large for satisfactory can ning. In his opinion the sardine busi ness should be moved to California, and he thinks to San Dieeo. "There are tons and tons of them in the bay," said lie. "and we have our own olive oil for putting them up. I should think it one of the most promising forms of lish canning to undertake here. If Europe wants to transfer its business to San L'iego, which is what it ought to want to do, it can be assured of plenty of sardines fresh from the water at, or per haps a little below. 2 cents a pound in ton lots. That is now the condition of lhe raw material market In San mego, due to the abundant supply of fish." This is also the condition at San Pedro with the variation that at the l.os Ange les suburb an enterprising fisherman has established a sardine business which has already assumed handsome proportions, and la rapidly growing larger. It scams a little strange that off the coast of the northeastern states and in the Alaska region, the moat forbidding and comfortless regions of the North American continent, tremendous fishing interests should have beoome established, while the California coast, wheie tho finest fishing grounds of the whole world may be found, should nave been utterly neglected by the experts. It may per naps be explained by tho fact that where t here are so many and so great resources some ot them are certain to be neglected, I at least for a time. THE MARKETS BY TELEGRAPH Money, Stock, Bond and Produce Quotations WALL STREET SPECULATION Exceptional Irregularity the Market's Distinguishing Feature Rumors of Another Government Bond Issue Have a Specially Depressing; Effect. Bonds Dull and Heavy NEW YORK, Sept. 12.—The 'feature of today's stock market was,as on the previ ous Gay, exceptional irregularity. Tho volume of business showed a shrinkage as compared with that of the day previous of about 126,000 shares, but the dealings were relatively well distributed. The leaders in point of activity in the railroad shares were St. Taul, Reading, Atohison, Rock Island and Tennessee coal in the industrials. Rumors of a probubie new government loan in tne near future and continued strength of the exchange mar ket had eapecialy depressing effects. The rumors of a probable new bondjissue by tbe government were supplemented late in the day by further weakness in the quotations of tbe new government fours. The declines as compared with last night's linal call were IJ< percent for the registered bonds and % per cent for the coupons. Tbe declines since the first call on Monday were 2Ji per cent for tan reg istered and 2% for tbe coupons. No withdrawal of gold was made for ship ment on Saturday but it is expected that about $2,000,000 will go abroad. About 2:30 the market rallied to 2|* per cent.
