thoughtful resumo of the history and life
of Louis XVI., showing, in an original
manner, his general characteristics, and
how these were produced parily by his
environment and the tendencies of the
age in which the unhappy monarch lived.
Mrs. Coleman drew a quaint end forci
ble picturo of the cunditionof the French
people, touched lightly upon Marie An
t-dnetts and ber sad story and treated in
a broad and charitable manner the mis
takes and foibles of Lonis XVI., giving
a grannie pittire of Ins uretehcd end on
the guillotine, surrounded ny that great

THE SOUTHERN DIOCESE
First Diocesan Convention Has Been
Called by Bishop Nichols
Dr. Spalding ol St. John's Mentioned as
tbe Foremost Candidate on
Tble Coest
Bishop Nichols bas called tbe first con
vention of t'e new Southern Episcopal
diocese ol Caliiornia, to be held at Los
Angeles Decern uer 31.
Tbe convention will be attended by tbe
clerical and lay delegates from tbe conn
tics comprising the diocese, which in
cludes banta Barbara, Ventura, Los An
geles, Man Bernardino, Riverside, Orange
and San Diego counties.
Bishop Nichols has chosen tbe north
ern diocese, having San Francisco for its
see city, so the work of the convention
will he to elect a bishop tor tbe southern.
It is not definitely known, nor will be
until after tbe c,invention, who the future
bishop of Southern Caifornia will be, al
though several clergymen, both from tbe
east and on tho Pacitio coast, are being
discussed as possible Incumber ts. Most
prominently among those mentioned of
the east stands Dr. J. H. Johnson, rector
of Christ church of Detroit, Miob., who
is described as a man of fine addiess and
high standing in the clergy. He is young
and enemetio and easily approachable,
ne is qualified iv every way for the posi
tion. At tho last general convention he
declined the bishoprio uf Indiana, which
was tendered him.
Dr. Oeorge William Dousloss, wbo waa
at one time rector of St. John's iv W. sh
ingtor, D. C, is spoken of as being a
candidate. He is a man of brilliant at
tainments. His charge in Washington is
considered one of the finest in tbe United
Stales. His sermons have a national
fame and are compared with those of the
laic Phillips Br. oks. The doctor waa
obliged to give up his pastorate in Wash
ington uwliil to the dolicato health of
bis wife, and is now traveling in Europe.
Dr. Daniel H. Greer ol St. Bartholo
mew's of New York has been mentioi.el,
but it is bardly probable tbat be will
leave his p.esent pastoiate. Bishop Tal
bot of Idaho is also talked of as a possi
ble candi late.
f:;Dr. Spalding of St. John's of this city
is foremost among the likely can a unites
of this coast, and stands probably a bet
ter chancs than any clergyman west of
the R. ckv mountains.
The ilev. H. B. Kestarick of San Dleeo
and Bey John B. Cray of Los Angeles
are consi lered, but th fact of their be
ing resid nt pastors of the diocese to a
cc tain exient handicaps them.
Southern California presents the most
attract ye field of any diocese created dur
ing the last decade. '' ospectively ii hae
great a I vantages. ah..ougb tbe salary is
low. No in ire desiianle class of people
can be found anywhere in toe country.
The Episcopal church allows great lati
tude in me personal views of its bishops,
but is averse to an ultra-man of any
school, ihe man whn will mast success
fully till the bishopric of the south so
prominent Episcopalians say, must oe
capable of pleasing—owing to the some
wnal limited extent ol tbe diocese—a
great many different kinds of people; in
othi-r woids, the requir moots of tba
-ni iller diocese are related to those of tbe
lar.er much the same as tbosa of a vil
lage church to a church in the metro
polis, |
'I here ai« no great extremes of churob
opinion down th>re,and the only question
ail] be to get a man w.th great executive
ao lity and wbo is he.rty and enthusi
astic.
Ii is provable that the two California
dioestvs will he iiesignaied oy their see
ciliisasthe diocese of San Francisro
a d iie diocese of Los Angeles—San
Francisco Cull.
