6 Office; 58 East Colorado Street is. i wmim Which Reads Like Fiction, b:it Is True THK SUNDAY SCHOOL COUNT Oi Pasadena's Population Will Begin oo SalurJay Testimony in the Lang Liquor Case — The Lecture on the .Tahatmas -Social Notes and Personal iientioi* PASADEN A, Nov. 21.-There is a story connected witb a brief norn which appeared in I lie Herald tbo other day, that well might form the basis of a novel and it is vouched for as perfectly true. "Thomas B. Hoffman uf South Pasa dena was committed to Highlands Insane asylum today. He has boen manifesting violent symptoms of insanity lately." Mr. Hoffman has been a resident of Pasadena and vicinity for the past eight or nine years, and is well known by tho older settlers as a sober, industrious and honorable man, having been engaged most of the time ns a ranch superintend ent. When bo wont hack to Ohio, after a year's stay in Pasadena, his former em ployers (still well known residents of Pasadena), for whom he had superin tended a 1400-acre ranch, wrote to bim and induced him to return and continue to work for them. He has remained here since tbat. time (188rJ)t, Although a man ol over 80, he was always supposed to be unmarried, never referring to a wife or family, until last spring ha final ly told an intimate friend that he was a married man, and had left a wife and seven children away bock in New Jersey many years ago. Ha snoke affectionate ly of them, and said that now that ho had at last seenrsd a little home of bis own bo was ready to send for them nnd have tbem enjoy it with him. When asked how long ago it was tbat he left them, he replied, "It was seventeen years ago." Tlie friend soon learned tbat he had not written a line to his family in that length of time, and of course had not heard from them, since they did not know his whereabouts, and yet he ap parently thought of them as being much the same as when he left them, seventeen years ago. He did not seem to realize that the children he had left at that tune were no.r grown men and womeu, or if he did, he evidently had a very inade quate conception of the changes that would nauraily 00041 rin tha course of ssventeen years. He asked bis friend to write to the postmaster of the little vil lage of his early days and obtain informa tion conce-ning bis wife and children, that be might inform tuem tbat he was now ready to have them come and share ins home with him; he was now in pos session of a little tract ol two and a half acres at South i'aaadena, set to fruit trees, with a little cottuge upon it, mak ing quit** a coin for table home. After bis irisnd had written several let ters and found face ol tbe family, a let ter came that changed -tlr. Hoffman into an old man almost in a day. He had ap parently been living in tho memory of the days of his youth ail these yrars, not realizing Ihe la nee fit time, until the re- i eeipt of this letter instantly brought home to him with terrible force and sud denness the full realization that it was seventeen long years since lie had left his home. Not long alter ue left .New Jersey information reaebsd nis wifo and family that Tom Hoffman had been killed in a railroad wreck in Pennsylvania, and sup posing tbis was the husband and fattier, they mourned him as dead from that lime. Tbe letter stated that he bad always been good ana kind to nis family, and when be Started out from his home to go west it wi'S in searidi of »vork. times be ing very hard in that vicinity. It tbi.s were the only sort of tes timony against Mr. Lang it would look rather bard tbat he should be convicted and made to pay a heavy fine, but it is understood that tlmre is lurther ovidance, where tbe liquor ivas not procured for medicinal or mechanic.il purposes. Mr. J.ang says that he is glad ol llie oppor tunity tiie trial will give him to prove tbat there is not a mora law-voiding citi- i /.en in the city than he, and ho denies thai ho has violated tho ordinance as it is interpreted by the best lawyeia in tha city.
