New York, March io.—The volume of businoKß in .took, today was alwut ou a, levei with that of Wedneiiday. The trading wa* for the moat part of ihe usual profes sional character, although some selling by commission houses was reported. Tlie course of trade was irregular and the movements reflected in a very slight de gree the limited news that might be con sidered to exert a bearing upon value.. Tho initial prices wero irregular, with tho international stocks showing improvement. The contributory influence was higher prices for American stocks in London and buying for that account in this market, chiefly to cover shorts. St. Paul was the leader in point of advance. Representa tive foreign houses were favorably im pressed by the news of less strained political relations of the powers, and especially England and France, regarding the proposed British advance into the Sou dan. Ihe early gaiim noted wero frac tional and were soon offset by the appear ance of weakness in several stocks aud by revived rumors of prompt action by the senate on the Cuban question. Freo sell ing by influential houses having Washing ton connections was noted, and this en couraged aggi'eßsivo action by tho profes sional dealers. Stress was laid upon the reported unsat isfactory condition of the iron Industries, while some smaller anthracite coal prop erties were attached on rumors of unfavor able temporary receipts us-to gross oarn ings arising from the prosont policy of rigid restrictions of the anthra cite coal output. The eccentric touo prices In industrials w r »s (piickly followed by tobacco still in tho lead in extent of trading. The railway shares enjoy a larger proportion of busi ness than usual, but the increase was at tended by acute weakness in a number of instances. In tlio later dealings a steadier tone was imparted through covering of shorts and light recoveries from the low point were made in many cases. The net changes were generally fractional losses. The railroad bonds were easier. Northern Pacific issues figured for a liberal propor tion of the total transactions i)f $1,410,. 000.
