A. V. Dilicke of the Hollenbeck and eGo. W. Lynch of the Hotel Florence, San Diego, met the putty of twenty-six ln their private Pullman ear, Cleopatra, at Col ton yesterday afternoon and escorted them to the city. From Cincinnati the laity went direct to New Orleans, where they were the guests of A. R. All members of the re ception committee will wear the badge of white silk ribbon with Idue letters and gold fringe at the bottom. The ' silver pin at the top bears the name of the committee. The visiting hotel people are also to be provided w'th badges, the gentlemen's hearing a bear and crescent, while that of the ladies represents a yellow poppy in en amel with a small green leaf upon a white silk ribbon. It was indeed a merry throng that Messrs. UUicke. und Lynch joined at Colton. and these two princes of enter tainers soon found their hands full but an easy task in entertaining the boni i'aoes from tho Buckeye nnd Hoosler states. An hour's ride, all too brief by reason of the mtrth'and jolity that reigned, brought the party to the depot, whence' they were conveyed in hacks to the Hollenbeck, where they soon made themselves very much at home and are thoroughly enjoying themselves. Already they are swearing by Southern California and the hospitality of the Hollenbeck. Very eloquent telegrams were dispatched last night by many of the hotel men to their friends and families in the east, telling of their great reception and how well they are satis lied with their present quarters. Spring St. Fell Flat Assistant District Attorney 'Williams yesterday went out to Monrovia to try a Chinese arson case. A Christianized Chinaman was charged with setting tire to a washhouse run by another China man,, the property belonging to J. S. Slauson. On the examination it de veloped that there was not the slight est evidence against the accused, where upon tho charge was dismissed and the costs, amounting to $27.70, taxed on tho prosecutor, which he paid Wanted a Complaint A Chinaman from the Verdugo ranch \esterday called at the district attor ney's oflice for a complaint against the foreman of Judge Ross' ranch, adjoin ing, for cutting a ditch and diverting water that should have gone to him. The foreman was sent for to come in and explain the matter. Tbe Charge Dismissed The charge of assault with a deadly weapon against Hall was yesterday dis missed by the Township Justice on mo tion of the District Attorney, who stat ed that there was not sufficient evidence on which to secure a conviction. A TRIO OF THIEVES. rude ■ Business pf Stealing Tool* and Burglarizing Residences. A* a result of aome clever work on the part of detectives Auble a id Hawley, 1 there is now behind the bars of the city I jail a trio of old convicts and thieves who i have been operating in this city for tome time. Many complaints had been received of thefts of all kind* of tools from carpenters machinists, blacksmiths, ttc. It became evident that a gang of expert sneaks were at work and the detectives set out to run them down. John Cnrley was the first in the toils. He is now serving a sentence on the chain gang for petty larceny. Curley has served two terms In state's prison and since he has been on the chain gang has made two or three attempts to efeape, the the last one only day before yesterday. On Thursday last Joe Edwards, alias White alias Wilson, was arrested under the Macy street bridge where he had fixed up a sort of den. Ed wards was placed in jail to await further developments. These came Friday night when detective Hawley got the last man of the trio, Harry Weils, alias James i lark. Complaints were yes terday sworn out charging Edwards and i 'lark with burglarizing the residence of .'. S. Johnson on the night of March 28 when they got away with a tine suit of clothes. Curley had a separate chime placed againat his name. He is imnlicated in the robbing of the house of a Reuben Weller on Mission road near the county hospital. While the family were away the premises were ransacked and numerous articles taken. Edwards is also an ex-convict, having put in two term* in the peniten tiary. Of Wells or ( lark not so much I* known. All the gang are tough looking customers of 30 or 35 years of age. These two were arraigned, in Judgi Owens' court yesterday afternoon and had examination set for »pril 11. Curley will be up for arraignment on Monday. The tools, clothing and other articles stolen during the past few weeks by these men will amount to hundreds of dollars in value and their capture reflects great credit on the officers, who have worked long and hard on the case. MORPHINE AND WHISKY. The Combination Proved to Be Too Much for an Old Soldier. John A. Quinn, a veteran, who has been an inmate of the soldiers' home for over live years, was found dead in bed in a lodging house at !>'J3 East First street early yesterday morning. Uuinn was a cripple, having lost a leg in the army, its place be ing supplied with an artificial limb. He catne to town Friday night and proceeded to acquire all the liquor his skin would hold. At about !• :3l) he engaged a room at the house named and paid to landlord 50 cents, 'J5 for a bed and the other quarter with which to procure a bottle of whisky. This was supplied and Quinn re tired. About 11 oclock he wanted more liquor, but the proprietor refused to procure it for him. At this he subsided and no more was heard of him durine the night. In the morning he was discovered stiff and stark in death, with an empty box which had contained morphine by his side. The body was removed to the rooms of Kregelo ife Bresee, where an inquest was held in the morning. A verdict of suicide by morphine was rendered, in accordance with the facts. Quinn was 54 years of age, and served in Company D, Fourth Maine infantry, during the civil war. He was a single man, but has three nieces and a nephew living in Worcester, Boston, Mass., and Free port, Me. He was addicted to drink, and often when out on furlough visited San Bernardino or Santa Monica, where he celebrated in becoming style. He had but 10 cents on his person when found.
