Chief Justice Beatty presided, with the full bench in attendance, with the exception of Justice Harirson, who will probably arrive today. The following were admitted to prac tice on the presentation of the usual credentials: S. A. Bowles, on presentation of the certificate of the supreme court of Ohio,' on motion of C. S. McKelvey. John F. Tannahill, on presentation of a certificate from the supreme court of the province of Ontario, Canada, on motion of W. T. Williams. Nathan Newby, on presentation of a certificate from the supreme court of North Carolina, on motion of Gen. Johnstone Jones. J. W. Summers, on presentation of a c ertlficate from the Supreme court of Illinois, on motion of J. D. Works. Several ex parte matters were argued and submitted, when the court ad journed until this morning at 10 o'clock, '-.'ben the examination of applicants for 1 admission to practice will be proceeded with. That Calabasas Caae Most of the population of Calabasas was In attendance at tho township Jus tice court yesterday afternoon at the opening of the trial of Mrs. Mary Bent ley, charged with having made threats-, of doing personal violence to younit "Dr." Allen. Allen recently attended Mrs. Bentley in confinement and it is alleged that as a result of his Ignorance she was seriously Injured. There nas more or less trouble over the matter, and it is alleged that Mrs. Bentley threatened to summarily cut Allen'n young life short. As a result, Allen had her arrested. Mrs. Bentley then swore to a complaint against Allen, charging him with practicing medicine without a license. The trial on the first charge came up yesterday. Much feeling has been aroused over the mat ter In Alabasas, and the trial promises to be an interesting one. Young Allen was on the stand during Ihe greater part of yesterday, his examination af fording much amusement to the audi ence. It will be continued today. Held to Answer The preliminary examination of the aiings brothers, charged with the mur der of John Hayes, the Puente post master, was concluded before Township Justice Young yesterday, and they were held to answer to the charge without bonds. The examination of Cook, the third man arrested by Sheriff Burr, will be held Thursday. Both the district attorney's office and Sheriff Burr think that they have a straight case against the men charged with the crime, and that their convic tion ls assured. Taken Under Advisement The motion to set aside the Informa tion against JamesM.McGinnis.charged with murder, was argued before Judge Smith yesterday and taken under ad advlsement. It ls alleged that McGltvus was not legally committed by the mag istrate. Sentenced te Folsom John Williams, the negro convicted of assault with a deadly weapon on I,inn a Jackson, a negro woman, was I yesterday sentenced by Judge Smith to two years Imprisonment In the peniten tiary at JPolsom. Andreas Nunez, the young Mexican who was also convicted of arson In try ing to burn the dwelling of Mrs. Cline, some weeks ago, was also sentenced by Judge Smith to two years Imprison ment In the penitentiary at Folsom. Nichols Morder Trial The trial of Conductor A. L. Nichols of the Vernon electric car line for the murder of J. W. Kirk, the old printer, was continued before Judge Smith in department one yesterday. Several wit nesses were examined and In other cases it was stipulated that the testimony given at the first trial should be admit ted. No new facts were brought out. The case will probably go to the jury to day. Sent to Hlghlande William Smith, the old soldier ex amined as to his mental condition be fore Judge Van Dyke Saturday, and sent to the county hospital for treat ment, was yesterday adjudged Insane and committed to the asylum at High lands. Pleated Not amity Henry Bloom, the fictitious "check shover," yesterday entered his plea of not guilty to two charges, and his cases were put on the call calendar to be set for trial. Robert Mack, charged with burglary on two counts, also entered his plea of not guilty, and his cases went on the call calendar. Sold Liquor to Indians Jesus Ariiso, yesterday, in the United States district court, pleaded guilty, to the charge of selling liquor to Indians, and will be sentenced to-day. Louis Castanln pleaded not guilty to the same charge, and his caae waa continued. A number of causes were continued by Judge Wellborn until this morning. For the Plaintiff In the case of Tanner vs. Buckingham Judge Clark yesterday gave judgment for the plaintiff. 1 Judge McKinley also gave judgment for the plaintiff in the following cases: Kcheveste vs. Kelsey, Howes et al. vs. (loodwln and Hahne vs. D. C. M. de Santa Maria. Judge Van Dyke gave judgment for the plaintiff in the case of Deslie vs. Bobst et al, and Judge York gave a similar judgment in the case of the Security Loan and Trust company vs. Sebastian Dullmer et al. Divorce Business 1 In the divorce case of Saunders vs. Saunders.the motion for alimony, attor neys fees and costs was yesterday ar gued and submitted before Judge Shaw. In the case of Dreschel vs. Dreschel Judge McKinley allowed $10 per month alimony, $10 costs and $50 attorneys fees. Judge McKinley also dismissed the order to show cause In the case of Blair vs. Blair, and Judge York continued the order to show cause in the case of Green vs. Green unell the 27th Inst. Argued and Submitted The matter ot the guardianship of Annie Reger was argued and submitted before Judge Clark yesterday afternoon This is a contest over the custody of a 15-year-old girl between the mother and the family who raised the child, and which was ventilated at length several days ago. Por tho Widening ol Broadway The city of I.os Angeles has brought suit against Leon F. Moss and the Savings Bank of Southern California for an easement over the westerly twenty feet of lot IS of block A, of the. Downey tract, on South Broadway be tween Ninth and Tenth streets. All of the other owners of property on the street have .accepted the amounts ten dered, and the street will now be open ed, Mr. Moss having agreed to give up the land and fight the case out after ward. The bank has a mortgage on the property, hence is made a party to the suit. ■ Charge* Fraud W. S. Norvill yesterday filed a suit for an injunc tion restraining the credit ors' committee of Ihe Insolvent firm of Fuller & Lewis from, disposing of the property of the firm. It Is alleged that the said committee surreptitiously en tered into an agreement by which they secured control of this property to the injury of other creditors, and more espe cially the plainttff. To Recover for Service* Rendered Hugh Todd lias Instituted suit against the board of education of Los Angeles city to recover $500. Todd alleges that his services as an architect were en gaged by the board to prepare plans for an eight-room adddition to the Spring street schoolhouse. The plans were prepared and adopted by the board, and they have never been paid for. Overruled the Demurrer Tn the c ase of Robinson vs. the Tlmes- Mlrror company, a suit for libel, Judge York yesterday overruled the demurrer to the complaint Fined for Contempt William Henderson waa yesterday ad judged In contempt by Judge Smith of department one, and was fined $5. Want* Damage* Mrs. Lucy Jane Harvey has brought suit against the city of Los Angeles to recover $2844 damages to her property, caused by the change of grade on North Olive street, between First and Court streets. Prior to 1891 expensive improve ments In the shape of cement sidewalks and retaining walls had been made, which have been rendered useless by the change. Covalt for divorce, on the ground of extreme c ruelty. rionthly Police Inspection The regular monthly police Inspec tion will be held this morning at 11 o'clock at the corner of Franklin street and Broadway, at which the finest will turn out in their best bib and tucker for the edification of the visitors now in the c ity. The entire force will be re viewed |n front of the city hall by the chief and police commissioners. The inspection Is well worth a visit to see, and an additional attraction will be a fife and drum corps heading the police, rifle team. Poll Down n Bank Humane Officer Clark was yesterriny called upon to shoot a horse which had had two legs broken by a fall over an embankment. The animal had been feeding along the side of Buena Vista street, opposite the Catholic, cemetery, for several days, and during Sunday night in some manner fell down tho steep bank some twenty feet high, re sulting in the breaking of both fore legs. A well directed shot put the poor animal out of Its misery. AGAIN IN TROUBLE Rota Shane Arrested an a Chart* •< Petty Larceny • _ 'A young man named Ross Shane, 19 years old, was taken In custody Sunday afternoon on a charge of petty larceny and placed in a cell at the city jail, al though not booked on the blotter at the clerk's desk. Shane has been hang- • Ing around the Athletic club for some time, although not a member of the organization. Thomas Gibson, a club member, left his clothing In a locker while taking a bath. While dressing Gibson discovered that two $10, two $5 gold plears and a $1 bill had heen ab stracted from his pockets. The only person who had been in the room during his absence was Shane, and when he was arrested the gold was found intact as well as some silver change. Shane's mother resides in Mexico, and he claimed that the money had been sent him by her, as she is in the custom of doing. He also denied having been near the Athletic club building on Sunday, which was untrue, as he was seen by one of the clerks coming from the room in which Gibson's clothing was con tained. The youth has been In trouble before, only lately having been dis charged on a larceny charge In the su perior court.
