FRIDAY MORNING CLUB Plction Discussed Under the Auspices ol tha Book Committee There was an unusually large attend ance at the Friday Morning club yes terday, the .subjects under discussion being The Technique of the Short Story, which was Ihe title of the paper pre sented by Charles Dwlght AVlllard. fol lowed by Mrs. Margarel Collier Graham, who read an essay on 'The Novel, writ ten liv David Swing. There was an In teresting subject, Four Years of Novel Heading, by Mrs. Frank Gibson, who Showed Hint the old Idea of novel read ing, being regarded as merely a pastime, bad evolved to an educational basis. It has been taken up in different institu tions of learning as a regular course of literature. Berkeley was the lirst Amer ican Institution to adopt the plan. Dr Phelps iii the past year has Introduced it Into Yale college. The books are re garded from the critic's standpoint. Tha main feature in this innovation being; the opportunity of studying types of humanity. The work at A ale is an ex periment, and it depends upon the pres ent class to establish its success or fail ure. At Hat kworth, a colliery district of England, in connection with the col lege extension, the work has been tried and proved most satisfactory, it is to enlist the interest of systematic novel reading at one novel per month. Mrs. Gibson outlined the course of the work at tho high school of this city. The morning was brought to a close by the report of Mrs. Willard, who attended the womans' parliament at Santa Ana ns a delegate of the Friday Morning (dub. . Next Friday the meeting of the club will be held in the evening and will be entirely of a social nature.
