Red . 80 b tt THE FRIDAY MORNING CLUB Hark Twain as a Humorist and Also as a Historian The subject of the morning at the Fri day Morning club yesterday was Mark Twain as a Humorist, a Historian and Personal Recolleetlons. Mrs. w. W. Murphy read the first paper, treating the author as a humorist. Between the sublime and the ridiculous, she said, there is but the thinnest curtain. We are excited to mirth by small and ur.ex- P< ctcd occurrences, as a small thing will make us laugh In church. For years Americans were so confined with cares they could not laugh, and the efforts of the humorist fell flat. In women, It 1b Bald, the sense of humor is. rudimentary. . : the speaker was reminded that ii re Is a difference In humor. Dixey had r,,. • New York laugh for a whole sea- BO! In A flute of Doughnuts, and she lit:,, watch, d the faces of the audience v ' i he made bis idling bite, in this i Itj »he had heard him in the same play, and the wit that had made New York burs! it-; buttons had fallen dead on it Los Angeles audience, because they did not understand the points." For the pttSl few months the speaker has been reading Punch, the noted humorous il lustrated paper of London, but she would not like to tell how long she had poured over some of the Jokes. Mark Twain's humor Is cosmopolitan: he la as much appreciated abroad as at home, and his fame has extended all over the world. There is a difference In spoken and written humor, and the faithful por trayal of character must be true life. Mirth is the medicine of life. The speaker read n number of extracts from Twain's humorous stories In illustration of the points In her excellent paper. Mrs. Larkin followed on Twain as a Historian, a light In which he Is not usually regarded; She cited A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur and Joan of Arc. recently published as a serial in Harper's magazine. Mrs. Larkln's pap. r was chiefly a compilation of criti cism" from the leading publications on the above named books. A number of ladies gave personal recollections of Mr. Clemens as a speaker or an acquaint ance, among others Mrs. Barber of Washington, D. C, a cousin of Mrs. Clemens and one of the party .who ac companied him from the Bahama Ul&ndfl on the steamer Quaker City. An it often happens, unfortunately, a quiet little woman who knew Mr. Clemens as n newspaper reporter in Carson, Nov., bi fore he had achieved fame as a funmy man, sat stiff, ami, like Brer Rabbit, "1 >pt on saying nothing." and the club lo■ . much that would have been of ln l. fH St In the author's life. POLICE CODRT CALENDAR Minor Happenings Before the City Jus tices Yesterday Ti:c preliminary examination of C. N. Lewis, William Curley and Banks Lin*. berry on a charge of burglarizing a i i. a " stand was to have been held before Jui tle< Morrison In the police court yes terday afternoon. On motion, the mat ter «as continued until next Tuesday ill 10:80 a. m. A strong effort Is being to have the charge reduced' to petty larceny, to which the defendants, It Is iil tted, are ready to plead guilty. - ntonees were passed on Charles ■son and Tim Daly, petty thieves, aid Thomas Ame.y for escaping from the chain gang. Johnson got twenty days for stealing a nightshirt; Daly sixty days for robbing his friend, Pat Mc- Uraw, of $5; Amey will serve thirty ii lya longer for his break for freedom. R. Bellini and his wife, Maria, were arraigned before Justice Morrison for battery, alleged to have been committed upon their next floor neighbor, Mrs. Mariana Latronica, on Thursday. The families reside on Wilson street, be tween Eighth and Ninth, and during the rain storm got Into a fight Because the Latronlcas were digging a ditch which diverted storm water into the Bellini property. Mrs. Latronica was hit over the head with a stick and a bad cut in flicted. The Belllnls pleaded not guilty and will be tried today at 2:30 p.m. Hut about five minutes was required to dispose of the case of Charles Nasur and James Burns, boys accused of dis turbing the peace of Mrs. Mary Noonan of 603 West Twenty-seventh street. Af ter the complaining witness had given her testimony and told' how the boys had called her names. Deputy Dlstriot Attorney James moved to dismiss, aa there was nothing in the case, which weus accordingly done. The case against Dr. J. J. Still, trie* on Thursday for disturbing the peace, but in which the jury were unable to agree, was set for the 26th, for a new. trial, again before a jury. Three vagrants and three drunks com pleted the list for the day, receiving thst regulation sentences. CALIFORNIA WINES. The Investor of the 14th inst. says: The latest advices from the north say that a resolution has beer, adopted' by the trustees of the California Sweet Wine association fixing- the price of port under its control at 32% a.nd'of angelica at 35 cents a .gallon, naked. This Is an advance from last year's prices of from 26 and 27 cents respectively. The reason assigned is that the vintage of sweet varieties of wine la a. third less than that of 1595. which, was about 4,500,00* gallons. This would'reduce the amount to 3,000,000 gallons, about half of which is port and angelica, and half sherry, muscat and' malaga. The three last named varieties are not in the combina tion, and their prices remain therefore sitill open. Transfers of dry wines to the California Wine Makers' corpora tion from members aggregate now over 5.000,000 gallons of the estimated U,» 500.000 gallons which constitute ths> yield. The corporation demands2o cent* a gallon without cooperage as the min imum price for these wines, a price that the large buyers refuse to give. The latter have agents out In the vineyards wha have made some purchases at 16 and 17 cents per gallon, but it Is re ported have about exhausted this source of supply. Roth buyers an* sellers will now hold off generally until March, the former in hopes of purchasing under and the latter in expectation of selllnsj HO cents minimum. A REGULAR ARTIST. She—Why do you inelst that Jenny See is particularly accomplished? He—Because phe can fry a doughnut so it will taste like angel cake.—Buffalo
