NEW YORK, March 15.— There was
a remnant of speculative spirit in
the stock market today, but It was
somewhat chastened and made itself
manifest in a conservative way. The
movement was hesitating and irregu
lar. The fluctuations' for the greater
part of the day, however, were above
last night's level, and It was not until
'the latter part of the session that any
considerable lmoada were made on
prices.
Dispatches from Chicago detailing the
enormous outlay contemplated by the
railroads for equipment for 1905 caused
a spurt In the various car and locomo
tive company stocks. There were pub
lished compilations of the extensive
traffic to- originate In the Southern
territory Yon account of the activity
In the' Southern iron trade, and the
large s cotton crop to be moved, which
led straightway to the marking up of
Stocks of the Southern group of rail
ways. •
- Less was heard of the recent ru
mors, regarding the Vanderbllts and
.Pacifies, but they also held their pe
riods of strength.
' ; Foreigners were inclined to sell
Americans again, the movement doubt
less originating In France and Ger
many, as a protective measure against
Russia holdings. It Is Interesting to
note, however, that the London Statist,
in an extensive review of American
.prospects, asserts a conviction that a
"large 'movement' of European capital
■into. Amerlcan"investments is "Immi
nent, owing to the great expansion of
productive facilities which promises to
be required In this country.
The Statist concludes by saying: ""In
•spite of the growth in imports into
•and ,the decline in exports from the
United States and also In face of the
Unprecedented expenditures of Amerl
•can tourists in Europe this year, there
may.be in the far distant future signs
that the gold which recently has been
exported from New York to Europe
will return to the United States. This
• operation would be brought about by
arise in money rates here.
The advance in the call loan rate to
day to 4 per cent seems to have been
immediately due to the withdrawal of
government deposits with the national
banks, but the effect of the interior
demand for currency is looked for in
New York by the end of March, and
Is taken some account of in the cur
rent outlook.
Prices sold oft rather sharply on the
rise In the call loan rate, and the day's
advances were much reduced or entire
ly .wiped out . . „
... Active.- discussion of the proposed
stock transfer tax continued a rather
discouraging factor .in the trading.

Active and Few Arrive.
Onions Go Up
With receipts of butter only reach
ing 2640 pounds In, this market on Tues
day, the demand became urgent os
dealers hkd no stock to supply what
whs really wanted. ' A belated train
came in and a small trading vessel ar
rived tit Redondo, bringing about JSO
boxes, but this did not nerve to meet
the situation. Never In the history of
I-.OS Angela*) butter men have supplies
or eastern, northern and local been so
short as now. . As the railroads refuse
to take shipments except at owner's
risk, outside trade, except to near-by
points, permits the distribution of but
ter to the loCal trade that Is consum
ing nil offered. Coast creamery Is the
scarcest and this Is firm at 60 cents,
and valley. creamery Is hardly obtain
able. '
Regarding cheese there Is only on»
opinion ,nnd that Is that stocks are
the scarcest ever known and that
prices lire up and firmly held. Re
ceipts for the week have been light
and shelves are empty in many cases.
Ijocnl makes do not meet the demands,
and if any dealer has a stock In storage
he !«' fortunate. •
KGGS ARK FIRM-r-As on yesterday
the egg market remains firm and, active
with some dealers short on supplies.
The egg quotation committee again
fixed the selling price yesterday at 23
cents for California ranch. This
shortage Is only temporary as several
dealers predict a decline, based on the
opinion- that; there Is In transit and
available at country points over 1000
cases that will land in this market
as soon as traffic Is resumed and roads
become normal. Demand, of course,
Is good for the moment, and soma
sales of extra fancy are reported at
24 cents, and one firm sold five cases
at 25 cents.
FANCY SPUDS FlßM— Demand Is
cleunlng up local potato stock and a
firmer market seems in sight as north
ern holders are firm in their views.
Highlands 'are $1.35, Oregon $1.40©1.50
and Colorado pearls , [email protected]. ' All
fancy stock Is scarce, btit common
grades are numerous, and this cannot
be laid down under $1.15 a hundred.
Onions remain at the high level, with
receipts light and stocks limited. Four
cents is being asked for fancy Ne
vadas, with the best brown and Dan
vers a close follower. All choice are
$3.75 and no large sales are reported.
When shipping Is resumed the stocks
in sight locally will not be long In
BANANAS FlßM— Owing to the non
receipt of bananas that are held up
in the Dragoon mountains of Arizona,
the market Is firm and Bupplles scarce
with price four cents flat and several
dealers out of goods.
Apples are in good shipping demand
owing to the lack of other fruit. Belle
fleur, in 4-tler- boxes, are $1.25(8)1.35,
with other varieties ranging from $1.50
<g>2.25 on quality.
Pineapples from Florida are $3.354()
4.00 a crate. Cubans, in crates of 16,
are $3.25, and Honolulu pines, fancy,
J-l.r.O'i? so.oo a dozen.
One. shipper reaped a harvest on
Lady Thompson strawberries yesterday
from Gardena at 16 cents a box, and
they didn't last long either.
Fancy rhubarb came In by steamer
and sold at [email protected] a box, and stand
ard $1.25®1.35.
Tomatoes from Tamplco, Mexico,
were in fair supply and In brisk de
mand at [email protected] a crate. No locals
are in.
Asparagus was limited and Jobbed at
9(8fl0c a pound.
Cabbage is plentiful at 50(560c a sack:
wax and string beans 14@16e a pound
and fresh peas 6iff>Bc.
All first-class hay is in good demand
and is fairly plentiful. Alfalfa atnl
under grade hay Is a drug and so plen
tiful that the movement is slow. Out
look for hay was never better, as the
ground Is soaked and the rancher is
preparing to seed a large acreage.
FISH AND GAME— AII kinds of fish
remained scarce owing to disturbed
waters. A few halibut 'came In, but
not sufficient for the trade.
Some lobsters appeared, alsocrabu,
and sold at once.
Damaged rabbits arrived and were
dumped, and no wild geese came in
at all. . „.-

Robins That Went Fishing
An extraordinary Incident wa« witnessed
recently by a aportsman at Blcester, Noting
a party of five robins foraging about among
the pebhles in the bed of a small stream,
from which they constantly flew on to a
neighboring wall carrying some llva object
In their beaks, ho followed a bird to Its
perch. Kicking about on tho top of the wall
ho found a small stickleback. Retiring a few
yards, he then kept watch and found that
tho birds captured their prey and held It
(Tosswlne, after the fashion of a kingnsher.
But they made no attempt to kill their vic
tims before eating them, as the kingfisher
does. — Exchange.
Mixed Types
Some year* ago the editor of a down east
nowapaper undertook tv compliment an em
inent citizen aa "a noble old burgher, proud
ly loving his native state," but th« neatly
turned compliment came from the composi
tor's hand* "a nobby old burglar, prowling
lound In a naked state." This was as per
verse and shocking as the blunder In the
message Ernest Renan had occasion to tel
egraph acros* tho English channel on th«
subject of a proposed lecture by hint In
Westminster abbey. The subject, as writ
ten by him, was "The Influence of Rum*
on th» Formation of Christianity." It was
announced in ISngland as "The Influence of
Hum on the Digestion ot Humanity."
It may be a greater thing to lift up an
other's heart than It would bo to uarry his
load.
