Southern Ptaclflc advanced IV4 and carried * Union ; Pacific up nearly a point." By Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 31.-Interest In to day's stock market was confined to spe cial stocks. The market aB a whole was unchanged from tho dull and listless trad- Ing of last week. Some of the movements in special stocks had nominal causes In the circulation of rumors regarding plans for the companies. Others were without explanation beyond the character of the buying. The identity of some of tho large ope rators In tho stocks usually active was the same ns the active factors In some of the leading movements last week. This led to the assumption thut tho dealings were designed to sustain the market dur ing Its period of dullness. Such was the effect of today's special movements while they were occurring. The effect was very moderate even then and lost some of Its force afterward when a drooping tone developed. The Btrength of St. Paul was connected with suppositions regarding the plans for financing its Pacific coaßt extension. It was asserted that buying of the stock was based upon knowledge that arrange ments had been completed for securing adequate resources for completing that work. The money market developments were of some importance but seemed to have little effect on the stock speculation. San Francisco again sent heavy remittances to New York by telegraph through the eubtreasury. the day's total reaching $3, 400.000. At the same tlmo some $2,000,000 was sent from New York to Canada, representing the fund attracted here dur ing the stringency due to the drain to San Francisco. Conditions In the foreign exchange market were greatly confused by the con tradlctorv information regarding the 'United States treasury attitude in the policy of aiding gold Imports by govern ment . deposits. Finally the deposit of bonds tor. the withdrawal of $1,500,000 by the National City bank was allowed on the ground that the arrangement for tho gold to be imported antedated the decis ion to discontinue the practice for the ■ present. This decision Is explained as being due to the present sufficient sup plies for the money market, doing away with the emergency condition which prompted the adoption of the practice In the first place. Money was freely offered on call. Pennsylvania was heavy throughout and weakened sharply at one time with the circulation of a rumor that the plac ing of bonds in Paris had fallen through. The denial of this rumor failed to rally the stock, and St. Paul reacted when the directors adjourned • without any an nouncement of a project for financing lt& extension. The effect of these two Inci dents was to Impair the advances and to make the closing tone easy. Bonds were irregular. I Total sales par value $2,430,000. The steamer J. S. Hlgglns will take her In tow for tho trip tonight. . • •'-•-. The Mexican steamer Curacoa, from Guyamnß, dropped anchor In this port for a short time yesterday, but "left no freight. Several passengers were taken, however. Deep sea fishing- has been exceptionally profitable to the men engaged in It lately. Capt. Shlvely of the Jesse C. came in this morning with over a ton of rock cod, for which he received 3 cents per pound, it taking him but one day to make tha catch. That cargo and one .of aba lones, caught by Japanese fishermen near Catallna with diving apparatus, was about all that came In today. Word has been received from the big steamer Bessie Dollar, which went to China with lumber not long ago, that ehe will iomo to this port to discharge her oriental cargo this time, She is a <arge vessel and will bring the second Asiatic cargo to this port. WATER BOARD MEMBERS ASK FOR LITTLE DELAY CONFERENCE ON CONSOLIDATION IS DEFERRED Joint Bodies Will Meet Next Week. Tonight Consolidation Commission Will Have San Pedro Delegation Before It at Reguhr Meeting It was found necessary yesterday aft ernoon to postpone the conference be tween the consolidation commission and the water board which had been scheduled to be held In the chamber of commerce last night. President Butler was notified that It had been found impossible by some of the members of the water board to be present last night,' and he was asked to set a later date for the conference. It la probable the two bodies will get together early next week, as the mem bers of the consolidation commission are anxious to , get the views of the water board on a number of important matters now under consideration. The regular weekly meeting of the consolidation commission will be held this evening. It Is expected that a delegation of Ban Pedro citizens will be present to discuss matters connected with the proposed, consolidation of the harbor town with Los Angeles.
