Yes terday It was discovered that the city assessor had assessed certain corpora tions so much less than th* Assessment made by the county officers that the difference amounted to -several million dollars. Yesterday afternoon an objection was entered by a Pasadean light and water rnnrern asking that the assessment on their machinery be changed from $5000 to $500. They alleged that tho Machinery was nothing more than Junk. A few moments later, however, As sessor Hen Ward delivered a crushing blow to th* proposed reduction when he mentioned a certain Instance of a few months ngn when Pasadena wanted to buy the said junk machinery and refused to close the deal because the company valued the Junk nt $10,000. INSTRUCTED TO WATCH THE MOSQUITOES' LEGS TO DETERMINE WHETHER CULEX OR ANOPHELES SPECIES Sixth warders in the neighborhood of Fourteenth street and Fanta Fe avenue fenr that matiiiin, a disease from which Los Angeles has heretofore -been ex empt, will be brought Into their dis trict by a species of mosquito which they have just discovered. Near the corner of Fourteenth street and Santa Fe avenue Is a big sump hole filled with stiignant water, and this is a most prolific breeding place for mosquitoes. Several persons of a scientific turn of mind have declared that they have seen the anopheles, a species of mosquito, the female of which carries malaria In her bite, and have laid the case before the board of henlth. Health Officer Powers declares that the only mosquitoes he knows to exist In Los Angeles are culex, a large breed with a big bite but which aside from irritation Is not disease bearing. He advised the persons living in the neighborhood to watch the mosquitoes as they alight on the walls and if the insect places all its legs on the wall It is the culex. If only the fore pair of legs rest on the wall and the second pair are folded under the winga and the last pair wave in the air It is the anophele3. If this species is found to exist the health board will sea that the stagnant water is either drained off or covered with a coating of kerosene.
