July 6— Very early in to day's trading on the stock exchange the same scarcity of stocks offering for sale developed as yesterday. This renewed the impression that the liquidation was over ;for the present. This conclusion was as 'cepted with extreme caution *y the pro fessional element owing to the miscalcu lation of the same symptoms yesterday when the market sold oft weakly at the last hour after a day of striking firm ness and freedom from selling pressure. The excessive dullness which developed today on the midday rise was the reflec tion of the suspicious attitude. The mar ket was almost at a standstill for long intervals and prices drifted aimlessly im tll the entrance of new buying orders into tho market caused the successive upward movements. - The discussion about the stock ex change hinged largely on the technical condition of the market and took llttlo account of the general situation of af fairs. News of the general condition has been, in fact, almost undevlatlngly favor able throughout the period of declines. Conjectures as to the strength of the (short interest in the market of stocks by Investment firms which are not ordinarily conspicuous in speculative dealings on the exchange. On the face of It the borrow ing of stocks for delivery suppressed a short sale of a simjlnr amount. The .'m portance of the Instance was Its reflection of the susplcioirs and unsettled state of professional speculative sentiment. The opening market still showed the effect of the disappointment over the mis carriage of yesterday's attempt to carry prices higher. The opening weakness was aggravated by selling for London ac count. Considerable disquietude was caused In that center by the ministerial remarks in parliament of the hazard of an outbreak of a religious war In Egypt with tne consequences to be looked for of expensive outlay for the conducting of a campaign. London's discount mnrket was not affected and continued to work lower -with favoring 1 effect upon New York's prospect for securing gold at that center . next week. But money conditions here 1 were also rather easier, money rate for call money falling during the day. For time loans the freer offerings were con fined to the shorter periods, while for six months loans and longer, carrying over the end of the year, money was reported to b<? still scarce and hard to get even at the 5% per <-ent bid. Foreign exchange held abated from that of last week. On sub-treasury operations the banks have gained during the week 1G03.000. In connection with the recovery in prices the reports were revived of a supposed deal for the Great Northern's ore lands by Jhe United States Steel corporation and of a rumored intention to Increase the Amalgamated Copper dividend. It was not until late In the day that the rising tendency proved convincing to the sken. tlcal traders. Their belated buying: then made the closing strong. ■ Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value. $1,950,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. New York Stocks, By A ssr elated Fress. CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET Favorable Weather In Entire Spring Wheat Section — Provisions Weak By Associated Press. CHICAGO, July 6.— Over the entire spring wheat territory the weather was favorable for the growth of the new crop, and In the southwest the absence of rain lacilitated greatly the movement to mar ket the new harvested grains. Because of these factors the market was under heavy selling pressure all day and was weak from first to last. The market for cash wheat at St. Louis and Kansas City was weak because of increased receipts, and this depressed the local market. The firm tone of the Liverpool market, due, it Is said, to reports of damage to the Bus-* t-ian crop, did much to prevent greater weakness here. The close was weak, with prices at the lowest of the day. Septem ber opened unchanged to VsC lower at 79V> ©79% c, and sold off to T9@'79%c, where it closed, %<B%c lower. Corn was weak on the good condition of the crop in Missouri. September closed at 51% c, a loss of Vs'iiViC The oats market was weak all day. September closed %c off at 35%Q35?4c. Provisions were steady early in tho day on a fair demand by local packers for lard and ribs. September pork closed 15c lower, lard was down 7%c and ribs were 17%0 lower.
