NF.W YORK, July 17.— Speculative Fentlment seemed bewildered today by the novelty of advancing prices of stocks and the maintenance of the advance with such persistence as was shown yesterday. There was a marked lack of speculative initiative manifest as a consequence !n todays dealings nnd the market w;t.< almost idle for a large part of the tim.-, ■with prices drifting listlessly and with no well defined course. The number of shares dealt in was somewhat in excess of the total of last Tuesday which made the low record for the present year, but the character of the trading otherwise was much the same. The professional tinders openly expressed skepticism of the stability of the higher level on the ground that covering of shorts was wholly responsible for the rUe and the reduction of the short Interest lessened the potential support of the mar ket at every step of the advance. It was only with the most extreme caution thu purchases were marie at the higher level established at the ripening and these gains were mostly lost In the subsequent uncertain fluctuations, Amalgamated Copper and Southern Pa clfis were responsive to gossip of in tended Increase of dividends. A coming meeting of St. Paul directors gave occasion for repetition of many ver sions of the supposed plans to finance the Pacific coast extension nnd the Hill stocks once more moved on account of the ore lands deal. There was some con fusion us to the present Bold Import movement, due in part to contradictory reports of the actual amount secured yesterday. Cabled reports from London pointed to J2.onn.oon or upward, but confirmation could he had of only $1,000,000 from New York bankers. Call money was easy, hut rate? for time loans were fully sustained. Foreign exchange continued to decline in spite of the gold encasements and belief was maintained that a further movement wa= in immediate prospect. The dying out of demand on the ad vance allowed prices to slip back and except in n handful of the most active speculative stocks the nny's net changes were Insignificant and the closing tone was dull and heavy. Bnnd.s were irregular. Total sales, par value. $1,238.01)0. United States 2s and n.a declined '.'■• per cent and the old 4s 1; per cent on call. * New York Stocks Ey As«r,rlni»,i Press NEW YORK. EVIDENCE IS GIVEN BY CLAP OF HANDS NEGRO WOMAN TESTIFIES IN MURDER CASE She Endeavors to Show Length of Time Between the Two Shots Fired When Henry Elton Was Killed Final testimony in the case of Henry Simpson, a negro charged with the murder of Henry Elton on the night of February 10 last, was taken yoster day before Judge Smith of the superior court. The attorneys for the people and Earl Rogers for Simpson were clos ing their addresses to the jurors when the court adjourned until this morning. In tho trial yesterday Simpson ad mitted the HhootiMK of Elton, but he was unable to state just what shot it was that wounded Elton mortally. He told his story in a straightforward manner and said that he did not tire the first shot nor did ho intend to kill Elton. Suggestion at drunkenness on the part of Elton ware made by the ac cused witness. Simpson said he did hia best to avoid personal contact' with Elton und it was only when Elton had tired at him that he commenced to grapple with him. An interesting feature of the proceed ings yesterday was the testimony of Lucy Brooke, the n egress from whose house Elton sought to brine a white married woman whom he believed was carousing with the negroes. Mrs. Rrooks stated that a lapse of five minutes, occurred between the first and second shots. Attorney liogerH asked the woman to clap her hands at intervals about the time between the first and second shots. The witness clappel her hands ut an interval of just thirty seconds. According to tho attorneys Mrs. Brooks is either ignorant of the length of different measures of time or has no conception of tho meaning of minutes or seconds. BIG CONSTABLE AND CONDUCTOR MAKE UP THEY HAD MIXED ON PACIFIC ELECTRIC CAR Attorneys in Court Suggested That They Shake Hands, Which They Did, and Battery Case of Long Beach Was Dismissed Probably one of the most mirth-pro voklng c: :s that has been in tha courts for days was the case yesterday before Judge Chambers of the peoplo versus A. O. Hawkins. Hawkins is a Pacific Electric street car conductor running 'on the Long Beach line. He is of rather slight build. The complaining witness was bis Deputy Constable Davis, who had the man arrested on a charge of battery. Davis claimed that he was carried by his destination on July 3 and that he remonstrated with the conductor, but only receivod a good drubbing tor hla pnliiF. This assertion caused even the judge to smile, for Davis is almost twice as largo us the conductor and apparently us strong us an ox. Davis had no witnesses to verify hia statements. \ Attorne" AlcGulre. for the Pacific Electric, suggested that the two men shake hands and settle the affair in that way. Some one whispered: "Have the case dismissed and settle tho affair in v buck lot." As small as was the, conductor ha nodded hift approval, but the deputy constable did not seem inclined to dis pose of the r.ftair In this manner. After v long talk in Prooecutillg At torney Heche's office it was decided to have the case dismissed and to forget the unpleasant incidents clinging thereto.
