NEW YORK,' Oct. 24.-There was a marked contractlQn In the volume of transactions on the) stock exchange and a corresponding slump )n prices today. There was a general assumption- that bankers and strong flnanolers felt op posed to active speculation st this tlmu «'nd stood prepared to offer measures to obßtruct any efforts to stimulate It. This understanding In Itself went a long way toward discouraging any aggressive mar kot operations so that active measures to obstruct them were not called for to a large extent The' smaller professional leaders had the market entirely to ihem nclvcs and their moderate transactions lmd little effect on prices. , Tho I beginning of the London session was watched with keen attention owing to fears that had 'been felt that an ex tended I account in American securities would be. disclosed there and w.ould be forced- out by loast week's rise- in the Bank of England's rate. The rates for carrying over holdings In tree . next ac count 1 were stiffened according .to Lon don reports rising, to 8®) per cent on Americans. There was also a very no tlve demand for cable transfers on ; tne New York exchange market In " connect tlon with tho settlement which ' made it evident that the account In \ Ameri cans ' was being largely reduced. toft don's settlement continues until Friday, which is pay day, and the waiting atti tude of me New York market is partly based on tho desire to see the outcome. There was some selling of stocks here again for London on account Develop ments in the money and exchange mar kets-were rather mixed. Money on call was easier here again. There was more confidence In the - effectiveness of the treasury measure for stimulating the tank note issues, in. ra.lovlne the money market. The sub-treasury account shows a considerable withdrawal from the banks since the last bank . statement, but this Is on "account of the return of. gold re ceived from abroad, which had been ad vanced .to the banks while in transit. Foreign exchange here continued to work hlgher/< v '.-■.' '■-. - . ...-.••..■..■. Occasional upward movements of special stocks met with selling and the under tone-of the dull market was heavy. The western - storm and reports of concerted demands on the 'railroads by switchmen were of some effect, in the depression. The announcement of an Increase in the N6rfOlk'& Western dividend was taken advantage of to sell the general list and the closing was ' weak, but still dull. Quick Response to Offer WASHINGTON, Oct. 24.— Up to the close of business today there has been received at the treasury department twenty-five. applications for increases in circulation under Secretary Shaw's offer of last Monday, aggregating about $7,000,000, and it is expected that the entire $18,000,000 will be applied for as fast as the banks can arrange for the necessary checks. ■■ ■• ■'•■. ■• .-, > New York Stocks By ■ A»w>rinted Prfcss. ,' • '• :* • NEW YORK," Oet: '24— The following were the . official quotations on the stock exchange today: > • ■ ''■- , '• High. BOSTON, Oct 24.— Drifting over New England in a prairie schooner, traveling the sun-scorched roads by day and Matterson and his wife and family are enjoying the outing of their, lives while en route front Hubbardston. Mass.. to Phoenix, R. 1., where they are to visit Mrs. Matterson's sister. For some time Mr. Matterson has been preparing an immense canvas cov ered ■ wagon, an exact counterpart of the famous caravans that brought the gold lusted hordes to. the west In '49 and opened up the wastes and gardens beyond the Mississippi In the early '50's. The Interior is fitted like a miniature household. Bunks are built along the floor and up the sides. Compartments for provisions are so arranged that they become chairs for the ! travel stained and weary during the day and cooking utensils are within easy reach. , The entire outflt is drawn by four massive horses, which are left to find their fodder under their feet In true western style, while they are tethered with long ropes that give them ample room to find choice bits within reach. The'jourrtey will consume thre,e weeks and the Matterson family will spend all their days living as nomads in the midst /of civilization. Prompted by their pioneer ■ Instincts they will live that life which is closest akin to na ture. All its attendant hardships will be theirs and many of Its joys. Their meals will be cooked In the woods and by the roadsides and will be savored with the smoke of twigs and branches. They have carried with them a final! tent In which they will sleep when the weather Is stormy, but when the nights are | clear a blanket will be their only coverlet against the outside world. ■ .Although they have been on the road scarcely a 'week' they rhow the early marks that nature always stamps on those who seek her at the very heart. They ' are all bronzed by the sun and over their faces has spread the flush of perfect health.' The children are brown as berries and look fur all the world like young Apaches. - In speaking of the trip Mr. Matter eon said: "I did not Intend to make this a Journey for health, but I now be lleve that nothing could have been more beneficial. I merely wanted to en joy my vacation in a novel manner and I , have succeeded far beyond my expec tations.
