FREE BEER GIVEN LODGERS Proprietor of Hotel Has Novel Induce- ment to Increase Trade, but Raises Room Rent A bottle of beer as a free premium to lodgers Is the custom with which George B. Smee, the proprietor of tho Golden West hotel, 416 South Main street, yesterday was accused of re sorting to in the effort to Increase the patronage of his hostelry. Officers Redmond and Ingram ar rested Smee on the complaint made by a detective who charged the hotul keeper with conducting a blind pig. This detective alleged that he en gaged a room at the Golden West hotel and was presented with a free bottle of beer — "thrown in free of charge," as ho was informed. The price paid for the room was 75 cents. A few nights Inter the same detective engaged the same room and was charged $I—but1 — but two bottles of beer were placed in his room this time. On I Investigation tho detective found that the rooms were charged for at the rate of 50 cents, with an additional charge of 25 cents for every bottle of i beer wupplled to the. patron, although j the patron was always given to un- ] derstand that the beer was a gift from the proprietor and was not considered in the bill at all. Sniee was lined $75 yesterday after- ' noon In Police Judge Kose's court. OPEN PARLORS FOR FAMILY lfI If club women of Los Angeles follow | the advice of Miss Leta Horlocker, the speaker before the Friday Morning club yesterday, they will have no more parlors that are not for general use. They will not shut up their best room, pull the shades down and put a gen eral gloom over the place until com pany comes and then open everything | up. for their benefit. Miss Horlocker thinks that the parlor and the use of it should belong to the family and not to the stranger. She says: "A husband should not have to put on his . clippers when he enters the house for fear of getting the carpet dirty. Fancy pillows, with a 'do not touch' sign should not be put on the most comfortable couch In the house, A woman who keeps her house only for beauty and other people's eyes In not a true housekeeper. The home In for comfort and the convenience of the family circle should be placed over everything else." Miis. Jlorlocker Is an interesting speaker and li an expert in china deco ration an well as an exponent of home comfort. - She Is a visitor in California and has never spoken here before.
