A shifting of loans began early In the day which ran the call loan rate up to 18 per cent and dislodged some holdings of stocks. Tin- covering of short contracts which was affected In yesterday's rising mar ket left that of today deprived of that much demand. There was evidence as well as renewed pressure of liquidation lnI In the Hill stocks and the subscription rights for St. Paul ran off In a way to nrgue ill for the prospective demand for the new stock. AA A new story was in circulation that a large speculative holding of the Hill stocks which was In a vulnerable posi tion had been taken over a private sale and It was hoped that tills would relieve the stocks from the pressure of the liquidation which has weighed on I hem for several weeks and the re newed depression was more disappoint ing. Long decline in these stocks gave rise to the disquieting rumors about the stock exchange today of damage which might result. These rumors were dis credited in well Informed quarters- nnd passed out of consideration when prices began to recover late in the day. This was after the principal money require ments had been met at the stock ex change. As loans made today carry over until Monday, which is the last day of the year, there was a growth In the feeling of confidence that year-end would be bridged without a violent flurry In the money market. The contrast In the action of the stock market In view of this tranquil condition In the call money market with the rapid rise in stocks at this time last year, when money went to 1251 25 per cent on call, was the subject of much comment. The most plausible explanation of the contrast is the more widespread stringency In the world s money market this year which ob structed the efforts of the holders of securities on margin to secure resources for carrying them in foreign markets and thus to ignore the fluctuations In the local rate. The usual estimate of the currency movement showed a balance In favor of New York, a large proportion of which was believed to be by receipts from The news of the death of President Cassatt of the Pennsylvania railroad was of almost no effect on the stock market, and did not come as a surprise. The late recoveries in the mraket were well held and the closing tone was fairly steady. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value. $1,054,000. United States bonds were unchanged.
