Oh, Why did the railroad offi cials inaugurate that •near crossing" rule on the da.y when most of the good people of Los Angeles had decided that never again would they use a naughty cuss word? More resolutions for good behavior and strict observance of religious rules were broken yesterday morning than ever before in the history of L.os Ange les, and the pity of it was that those resolutions were broken before the vic tim had had v chance to really appre ciate what he had done. The fun started early when the crowds began to assemble on the, corners to tako city-bound cars for connection with Pasadena-going electrics. Oh, yes, they had all read the notices that, beginning January 1, all ears in the city would stop on the near cross- Ings; they had read those signs both In the Name of Sense, that good common sense of which all of us have a share* how can you continue to buy ordinary soda crackers, stale and dusty as they must be, when for b<£ you can get Uneeda Biscuit fresh from the oven, protected from dirt by a package the very beauty of which makes you hungry* NATIONAL BISCUIT COMPANY in the street cars and in the newspa pers, but they forgot the date. As a. result they stood on the same corners as of yore and watched the street cars go by them, while profane language flowed from between clenched teeth. There is only one thing on earth more terrible than a man who has been passed by several earn, and that is a woman under the same circumstances. A long file of people would stand on the crossing and signal a car. It failed to stop, and the men swore. The women looked language worse than that used by the men, and the motormen only smiled and said nothing. Motorman Gets His The suburbanites suffered worse, for the cars were far apart and when they missed one it meant a fifteen or twenty minute wait before another hove in sight. As a result they lost their tom pors, were compelled to wade through mud to roach the heretofore unused crossings, und finally landed with much language and indignant gestures on some ear and promptly cussed the inu torinan. When that did no good they cussed the conductor, and when he took them Inside the car and showed them the sign on the doors, they sat down and cussed themselves. In the down town districts men made mad dashes for the street cars, some grabbing at Hying bars from rear plat forms, some thrown, and some manag ing to reach the steps In safety. Argu ments were rife and there were fights galore, but none suffered seriously. The men soon learned that if a car passed by them after having stopped on the near corner, of a necessity tho near corner was the place to board the car, but the women didn't reason that way. When they stepped out to hail a car and It left them in the lurch, they con sidered it a personal affront on the part of the motorman, and they became LOS ANGELES HERALD: WEDNESDAY MORNTNG. JANUARY 2, 1907. indignant and very cold while they stood firm on the far corner and waited for a car to stop for them. Some would be waiting yet if kind hearted people had not told them where to board street cars. The matinee girls, wearing dainty at tire, were nearly frozen before they learned the proper corner to stand on. Many explanations for delayed engage ments were necessary, and it was an ill humored public that spent New Year's day on the streets. Rut the new rule is regarded as a Rood one, since it cuts off more than half the stops necessary at street cross- Ings on the down town streets and is a safeguard against possible street ear collisions, compelling motormen to stop before, crossing a cross-town line.
