MARKET IN HANDS OP PROFESSIONALS LARGE SUPPORTERS ARE NOT IN EVIDENCE General Note of Warning from Re eponslble Sources Ha* Its Effect. Money Supply Viewed with Apprehension By Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 8.-The stuck mar ket showed Increasing Indications today of lapsing Into professional hands and those of tii.. smaller class of operators. The frequent turns In tho course of prices, the narrowness of the fluctuations nnd the notable shrinkage in tho aggie- Kate sales for tho day all pointed un mistakably to the abstention from th« mnrki'i of any largo and consistent class ot supporters. This Wai lie response to a rather gen eral note uf warning from responsible sources of tho rate and extent to which the rebound was running after the recent extreme depression. In the monpy market situation par ticularly, although the reality of the realisation from stringency is not ques tioned on nny hand, there Is Inquiry as to the adequacy of the relief to meet all the needs to bo faced. fh« totrn-f ol railroad corporations for borrowing largo amounts are still oner ous, ;ia exemplified In the terms of sale of Krlfi notes last week. Any general re sumption of the projects Of extension by the railroads l« dependent on the easier lHtos for money reaching tr> this field of borrowing, or to such revival of the de- Riand for new capital Issues as to Justify a resort to that means of financing the work of bettrrmentH again. Even in the case of subscriptions to capital Issues alrendv made, there In matter for the consideration of future borrowers dependent upon money sup plies. Todny'H maturity of four 10 por cent Installments ol Great Northern nl nek calling for $24,1K>0,0n0. directs atten tion to the monthly recurrence for some time to come nf a 6 per cont Installment of these subscriptions. For Northern Pacific, new stock sub scriptions also there will fall due quar terly Installments of 12% por cent begin ning July 1, each of which will call for moro than $11.0i)ft.0Oi). while for St. Paul $100,0(10.000 of new stock, 15 per cent Is payanlo June 1 and 20 per cent Install ments on thre« half yearly periods after that with a final IB per cont to be paid March. 1900, In tho meantime largo note issues by corporations will mature which are ex pected to call for refunding, with success dependent upon a revival of the demand for bonds. It Is to bo noted nf the recent revival In the. bond market that besides the good effect of the ensine of the money mar ket, something is dun to the demand by banks for bonds mndc available tn secure government deposits under the: new rul ing of the troasirry department and also to the movement toward reinvestments against the retirement nf all but the f.=>n.- OM.OOO to be refunded nf the outstanding government 4 per cents of 1907. The sterling exchange market also, by its persistent strength here In spite of the decline in interest rales In London, points to the possibilities of unsatisfied money rf-nulrements abroad. Brokerage houses today reported a small volume of orders for stocks and early attempts to advance prices quite generally met with supplies of stock which turned the room traders to iho bpar side of the market. The resulting decline was Incompletely recovered later and the closing tone was rather heavy. The narrow net changes ere significant in themselves of the professional origin of much of the day's transactions. The tone of the bond market showed some re actionary tendency from the rodent uni form strength. Total sales, par value, $2,068,000. Government bonds were unchanged on call.
